Adult Keeper Experience

New Forest Wildlife Park
From: 01 May '18 10:00am -
To: 03 Jan '19 04:00pm

Roll up your sleeves, put on your boots, get your hands dirty and join our animal keepers at New Forest Wildlife Park for an hour, 2 hours, or a half or full day.

We’ll be happy to vary your Keeper Experience, depending on the time you want to spend with us and your individual interests.

If you’re mad about otters, help to get their food ready and watch them squeak with excitement as you feed them their dinner. Or would you prefer to feed the deer?

With food preparation, feeding times, animal enrichment activities and general animal care, a Keeper Experience will give you first-hand experience of what it’s like to be a keeper and how things work behind the scenes.

Throughout your Keeper Experience you will be accompanied by one of our knowledgeable and friendly animal keepers, who will ensure you have an exciting and enjoyable time.

A Keeper Experience is the perfect way to say thank you to a loved one, for a birthday, anniversary or celebration, or for a gift with a difference. So contact us to find out more and we’ll do our best to make your Keeper Experience special.

Keeper days are available all year round.

Wildlife Keeper Experiences are available all year round.

Make your family’s Christmas magical and join us at Marwell for our Enchanted Christmas. Watch out for some exciting updates for this event.

“Having participated in a large number of Christmas events at various places with the grandchildren I can honestly say that the Marwell Christmas event surpassed any of the others. The group sizes were just right and all the children seemed to enjoy the story time and plate painting. Everything was arranged beautifully. The gift was excellent quality too. This was 1.5 hours well spent and we will definitely go again. Plenty of time after for a meal in the restaurant and visit to the animals. Well worth the money.” ~ SueN280 on Trip Advisor

Meet Santa in his Grotto

Meet Santa in his magical Grotto and many of his animal friends along the way as they all get ready for Christmas Eve. Adorable animated characters greet you at every turn with twinkling lights and magical scenes brought to life. A gift for all children and a festive treat and hot punch for adults. We take a very special photograph of you and your family when you meet Santa, which is then available to purchase in a festive presentation folder from the Christmas Cabin when you leave the Grotto. All visits must be pre-booked

Santa's Grotto is available to book 9:30 – 17:15 on selected days throughout November and December. There is limited capacity so book early to avoid disappointment. Park entry is included with your booking, rides and attractions open from 10am.

Peppa Pig World at Christmas

Peppa Pig World at Christmas is transformed with twinkling illuminations, seasonal music and giant Christmas trees. Santa in his sleigh with the reindeer from the series can also be seen; you can also meet Peppa Pig and George in their winter scarves, hats and coats.

The Musical Christmas Tree, Snow Street and Illuminations

Our spectacular musical Christmas tree stands in the entrance plaza and performs a festive song & light show every 15 minutes. Show Street will be transformed into Snow Street during the Winter season and see the beautiful illuminations in Peppa Pig World. Top tip, head to Peppa Pig World towards the end of the day to see the lights in full glow.

A Very Merry Christmas Show

Christmas at Beaulieu

Beaulieu
From: 23 Nov '18 04:45pm -
To: 24 Dec '18 10:00pm

Experience the new magical, after-dark, illuminated trail through the grounds and gardens of the Beaulieu visitor attraction this Christmas.

On selected dates between 23 November - 30 December, the tree-tops will glisten as the gardens and buildings shimmer with seasonal sparkle. There’s something for everyone as a one mile illuminated path winds its way through the grounds in a magical after dark experience. Greeted by the sights and sounds of Christmas, wander beneath unique tree canopies drenched in seasonal colour.

A FESTIVE OUTDOOR WALK FOR ALL THE FAMILY...

SCENTED FIRE GARDEN

Explore the stunningly lit ruins of the medieval Beaulieu Abbey before pausing at the flickering flames of the scented Fire Garden Cloister for a moment of reflection.

TUNNEL OF LIGHT

Perhaps leave a special Christmas Wish at the Wishing Tree before you continue through the Tunnel of Light festooned by a canopy of over 100,000 twinkling pea-lights.

PALACE HOUSE PANORAMA

Surrounded by sparkling hedges, follow the path towards the Palace House Panorama. The grand country house, home to the Montagu family for centuries, is brought to life by beams of light that dance in time to much-loved Christmas classics.

FATHER CHRISTMAS

Amid all the fun don’t forget to glimpse Father Christmas and his elves as they greet you from the roof of Beaulieu’s veteran bus.

ICICLE WALK

Along the Icicle Walk, larger-than-life gleaming shards guide you towards the Meadow of Light where thousands of fibre optic heads sway in unison. There are hidden surprises too – watch out for frosty snowflakes, shimmering stars and gigantic baubles where you least expect them.

SINGING TREES

As you wander beneath playful ribbons of colour-changing lights, the mesmerising voices of Singing Trees can be heard in the distance. Rising high into the night sky this festive finale is a cheerful Christmas blast of colour and light.

SEASONAL FOODS & GIFTS

Complete your stroll under the stars with spiced cider, mulled wine or hot chocolate whilst the aroma of roasting chestnuts fills the air. Gather to toast your own marshmallows at one of the fire pits, ride the vintage Carousel* or Ferris Wheel and enjoy other traditional fare before picking up a gift or two at Beaulieu’s shop.

Santa and the Elves Christmas Experience

Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium
From: 01 Dec '18 10:30am -
To: 24 Dec '18 04:30pm

Santa and the Elves are back at Winchester Science Centre and this time they’re joined by Jack and the beanstalk! A Christmas experience like no other with live science show inspired by the classic children’s tale, an elf-led activity, Christmas planetarium show and chance to meet Santa. Spark your children's imagination and curiosity this Christmas at this fun-filled family day out!

What's included?

Santa and the Elves Christmas Experience includes two main events, an hour-long Santa and science experience (live science show, elf-led children's activity and chance to meet Santa) and a 30-minute Christmas planetarium show.

Science Show

Inspired by, and featuring, Jack and the Beanstalk - this 25-minute live science show investigates different forces to see how they can help Jack reach the very top of his beanstalk.

Elf-led workshop and chance to meet Santa

In this 25-minute Jack and the Beanstalk-themed activity we invite children to grow their own Elf grass - to decorate and plant up their own mini paper plant pot to take home. Santa will be present throughout the activity allowing children to meet him first as a group before being invited to say hello in person. Children will receive a wrapped gift from Santa.

Reindeer Round-up in Space planetarium show

The elves have lost Santa’s reindeer and they need your help to find them! This fun presenter-led 30-minute planetarium show will take the audience on a journey through the Solar System in search of Rudolf and his fellow furry friends to help save Christmas. This show is included in the Santa and the Elves Christmas Experience but can also be booked with General Admission for £3.50 or £6.60 for the show only here.

‘A truly fantastic day out. My wife and I were bowled over by the amazing spring colours of rhododendrons and azaleas and there was literally colour everywhere. There are beautiful areas to walk through as well as places to sit. We took a picnic in the hope of being able to sit by one of the ponds and were not disappointed – the reflections were as spectacular as the real thing! The next thing we want to do is return in the autumn to see the colours change as it must be beautiful’

CATHEDRAL CAROL CONCERT

Winchester Cathedral
From: 14 Dec '18 07:00pm -
To: 21 Dec '18 09:00pm

Entitled Star Shine: an evening with the stars you are welcome to an evening of music, laughter and delight at Winchester Cathedral as the bright stars of the Cathedral Choir, boys, girls and lay clerks sing music for Christmas.

A highlight of the evening will be a tribute to HM Queen Elizabeth, the great star of our nation, with the premiere of ‘Queen Elizabeth's Winchester Carol’, composed by Roderick Williams and commissioned by the Friends of Winchester Cathedral.

This year the choir is supported by stars of the opera house, in Paulo Ferreira and Clare Rutter, singing well-loved repertoire both classical and contemporary. Dirk Maggs, producer and director of Radio 4’s The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, will remind us the comedy of Christmas, and the evening with be hosted by BBC South Today’s, Sally Taylor.

Throughout the concert, readings and reflections following contemporary Christmas themes will be interspersed with delightful performances of traditional and light-hearted carols sung by the Cathedral Choir.

Tickets (£20 - £40) are on sale now. Every Friday till 21st

Send your letter to Father Christmas

Exbury Gardens and Steam Railway
From: 15 Dec '18 10:00am -
To: 16 Dec '18 04:00pm

Send your letter to Father Christmas train on our Postal Express!

Discover the magic of winter at Exbury Gardens this year. Our traditional-style celebration hopes to bring families together with carol signing, festive crafts and exclusive access to our magical gardens during Winter.

Not forgetting the very special Postal Express train that is exclusive to our miniature steam railway! Children are invited to write their wishlist in our Railway Shed using glitter, cotton wool and a whole-host of crafty bits. Families will then hop on-board the Postal Express and take a our festive route through the gardens with fairy lights, tinsel and a little sprinkling of magic. See if you can spot Father Christmas through the trees organising his elves and reindeer! At the end of the journey, children can then post their letter directly to the North Pole with the help of Head Elf Milseltoe and some festive singing.

We welcome all families and can accomodate wheelchairs on our trains. Just let us know if you need any additional assistance and we will do our best to make sure your day is enjoyable.

Mr Eddy's restaurant will be selling a selection of seasonal treats, such as:

Homemade stolen

Spicy Parsnip soup with chunky bread

Christmas cake muffins

Panko breaded Turkey in a brioche bun with cranberry, sprout slaw, fries and dressings

Gingerbread men

Lamb or Beef Scotch pie with chunky chips

Mince pies

Roasted winter vegetable and chestnut scotch pie with chunky chips

Sandwiches and baguettes with seasonal fillings

£6 per person.

No need to book, just turn up on the day!

‘What could be better on a trip down to the New Forest than a walk in a beautiful garden, a ride on a steam train (which my grandson adored!) and a chance to see the Beaulieu river close up? A memorable day out and a gem of a place’

‘We recently had some friends from London to visit and were looking for something to entertain our young children for the day. We decided to give Exbury Gardens a try and I thought it was wonderful. We had Sunday lunch in the restaurant and the food was far superior to other local attractions so compliments to the chef. Walking through the gardens was beautiful with lots of little pathways to explore. I have lived in the Romsey area for many years and always thought Exbury was a little out of the way but it only took me 20 minutes from the motorway. We will definitely be a regular visitor from now on.’

Chill out in front of your favourite Christmas film in the exciting setting of the planetarium.

For cinema tickets only, please ensure you arrive after 4.30pm. The doors will open shortly before 5pm. There are no trailers so please ensure you arrive in time for the film to start promptly at 5:05pm.

Hillier Gardens: The Secret Life of Plants

Improve your botanical illustration and gardening knowledge.

Six days

Sunday 6 January - Sunday 2 June, 10am - 4pm

Improve your botanical illustration and gardening knowledge with 6 fun exploratory workshops.

Follow the story of plant life through the seasonal cycle and study the forms and functions of plant parts. Drawing plants with botanical precision sharpens observation of flower and habit features, deepening plant understanding and easing identification.

SYLLABUS:

  • Week 1, 6 January Fruits, seeds, nuts and seed dispersal
  • Week 2, 3 February Winter twigs and stem structures
  • Week 3, 3 March Germination and growth
  • Week 4, 7 April Leaves and photosynthesis
  • Week 5, 5 May Roots and vegetative reproduction
  • Week 6, 2 June Flowers and sexual reproduction

Each workshop (except the first) starts with a review of home studies. We share what we have discovered in our own lines of interest. After coffee there is a presentation on the subject for the week, with live examples, discussions and microscope observations. After lunch the group gets down to some serious drawing and painting of their chosen specimen. Your tutors Sally Pinhey MSc, FLS, SGM, FCPGFS, and Sue Flynn RN. SCM Dip. SBA. will give individual attention during this time, concluding with the individual home study projects for the month ahead.

A materials list will be provided.

Price: 385p/p for six month course

Includes workbook worth over 17, lunch and refreshments

Applying Missile Defence Technology to Solve the Near Earth Asteroid Problem - Alexander Godfrey (Lockheed Martin)

THE LECTURE

The Chelyabinsk meteor in 2013 caused approximately £10 million worth of damage and led to 1500 people seeking medical attention. The object remained undetected prior to its atmospheric entry and a larger meteor would be catastrophic if it happened over a city.

Before panic sets in; some comfort can be taken that systems already exist, or are being developed, that could deal with this threat. With the technology potentially at our fingertips, this presentation primarily explores whether or not there is a strong enough business case for the inhabitants of Earth to pay for such a system.

THE SPEAKER

Mr Godfrey is a Senior Systems Engineer working at Lockheed Martin UK – Ampthill, technically leading the pursuit and execution of new business civil space programmes. Most notably he has worked on ESA Space Rider, ESA Mars Sample Return Orbiter, Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators as well as several classified exoatmospheric programmes.

Big Computers and Little Galaxies - David John Williamson

The Lecture

What exactly does a “supercomputer” look like these days? How do astronomers use them, and what kind of results do they get? Using results from dwarf galaxies simulations performed at Southampton University, David will answer these questions and explain what they tell us about these vulnerable little galaxies, and the local universe in general.

The Speaker

Born in New Zealand, David Williamson completed an MSc in Condensed Matter Physics at Victoria University of Wellington before pursuing his true passion of astronomy and undertaking a PhD in Computational Astrophysics at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Canada. After three years as a postdoctoral researcher at Université Laval in Québec City, he has been working as a postdoctoral researcher at Southampton University since 2016, developing simulations of active galactic nuclei and dwarf galaxies.

From: 03 Apr '19 04:30pm -

The Great Orbital Debris Patch - Hugh Lewis (University of Southampton)

The Lecture

Using computer models we can simulate what the space environment might look like over the next 1000 years taking into account many different patterns of space launches and satellite characteristics. A consistent picture of the future emerges when we evaluate these different scenarios and assume our behaviour in space remains unchanged: a new region containing a high concentration of artificial space debris will likely develop at an altitude of about 1400 km.

In effect, we will have created our own ring around the Earth. The formation of this region and its characteristics are similar to those of plastic debris patches found in the Earth’s oceans. This ‘Great Orbital Debris Patch’ is relatively indifferent to how we might choose to use space and, crucially, becomes self-supporting. Consistent with the oceanic debris patches, future generations of space users will see consequences increase by orders of magnitude unless appropriate space traffic management systems and debris mitigation practices are put into place.

The Speaker

Hugh is a Professor of Astronautics and Head of the Astronautics Research Group at the University of Southampton. He has been researching the space debris problem for nearly 20 years and is the author of numerous computer models for understanding how the space debris population might evolve in the future.
