From: 28 Jul '18 10:00am -
To: 31 Jan '21 04:30pm

As a centre we are aim is to help the community we serve in anyway possible. Management and retailers have recently undertaken an amazing awareness training session by a Dementia Friends Champion to help us understand some of the challenges faced by people who are living with dementia, autism or other sensory issues whilst shopping with us.

With this in mind we have introduced Sensory Sundays every last Sunday in each month.

These changes  we have introduced such as requesting the stores reduce the volume of their music and security/cleaning staff to be available to assist wherever possible. We really hope that this will help make a difference and be more inclusive. Very much like to involve our community as a focus group, to feedback any of the issues they find which makes shopping a challenge. If you would like to be involved in this please contact us for more information.

This will be every Sunday throughout the year!

Westquay's Quiet Hour

Westquay Shopping Centre
From: 08 Jul '19 09:00am -
To: 31 Dec '20 10:00am

Starting Monday 1st July 2019 Westquay will be running a regular weekly quiet hour. This will involve the centre and its retailers working together to create a quieter than normal shopping environment. The hour is aimed at visitors, young and old that find large public spaces, noise and crowds of people difficult to deal with.

We hope this offer builds on the great work that’s been achieved over the last year with a range of our community partners to continuously work towards Westquay being an accessible environment throughout the year.

Westquay's quiet hour will take place every Monday 9am - 10am

KINGS & SCRIBES: THE BIRTH OF A NATION

Winchester Cathedral
From: 01 Oct '19 09:00am -
To: 01 Jan '21 05:00pm
Be one of the first to explore Kings and Scribes: The Birth of a Nation, a stunning new exhibition at Winchester Cathedral.
Winchester Cathedral is a living monument to the heritage of England and is one of the most historically significant buildings in Britain. From the time of Alfred the Great until after the Norman Conquest, Winchester was England’s capital and the Cathedral was its royal chapel. Much of England’s early history was based here and twelve English kings are believed to be buried here – meaning that Winchester can lay claim to being the first Royal Mausoleum. The opening of Kings and Scribes: The Birth of a Nation marks the culmination of an ambitious seven-year project to unlock the Cathedral’s stories and treasures by inspiring active engagement in the interpretation and exploration of our heritage.

Thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and other generous supporters, a spectacular three-level exhibition space in the South Transept will take visitors on a journey through over 1,000 years of history, whilst offering awe-inspiring views of the Cathedral.

There are four exciting galleries to explore:

A SCRIBE’S TALE
The Winchester Bible is the largest and finest of all surviving 12th-century English bibles. Hear the incredible story of how and why the Winchester Bible was made, in the Cathedral where it was created, and admire its exquisite illuminated initials and elaborate decorative schemes.

THE BIRTH OF A NATION
Winchester played a unique role in shaping early English history and Old Minster, the Anglo-Saxon Cathedral, lay at the centre of its foundation. Join us on an intriguing journey of discovery as we unearth the secrets hidden within the Cathedral’s mortuary chests, meet influential Anglo-Saxon kings in the city from which they ruled and discover the role of Winchester’s Anglo-Saxon and Norman Cathedrals in the birth of a nation.

DECODING THE STONES
Unlock the mysteries of Winchester Cathedral, a building which has been created, destroyed and remade over centuries of struggle and Civil War. Decoding the Stones will tell the story of the Cathedral itself, linking modern restoration works and contemporary craftspeople with their medieval predecessors.

THE MEZZANINE
Explore the realities of monastic life at Winchester Cathedral Priory with a fascinating rolling programme of displays from the Cathedral archives. The Mezzanine also provides access to the remarkable 17th-century Morley Library and its outstanding collection of books, which have remained in their current location for over 400 years.

Enjoy friendly banter as you travel on a steam train drinking local ale! Our famous Real Ale Train, or RAT as it is affectionately known, continues its tradition of serving real ale from a restored bar carriage pulled by a steam locomotive. We select up to 2 local breweries from Hampshire and the surrounding counties for each train. Your on-board experience is approximately three and a half hours long.

*Pub Busting Prices*
Train fares are only £16 per person and just £3 per pint!
FREE Pint voucher when booking more than 3 days in advance

RAT services for 2020 will start and finish at Alton Station.

The RAT departs ALTON station 7.00pm, returning to Alton approx 10.30pm (connects with the 10:44pm South Western Railways departure from Alton, plus one further service after that).

Reserve a compartment Compartments can hold up to 8 people and would be exclusively yours for the evening for only £55. Limited availability so first come, first served. Available to book as an additional supplement when purchasing your tickets.

Why not fill your glass? Purchase an exclusive RAT pint glass as a perfect memento of your great night out - these glasses are only available to purchase on the RAT at £6 per pint glass.

Full Bar It's not just about ale - we also sell wine, cider, spirits, mixers and soft drinks. We regret that we are unable to accept credit or debit cards on the RAT - Cash bar only.

Hot Food Curry, chilli, burgers and hot dogs as well as a vegetarian option will be available from the West Country Buffet at Alresford Station during your stop over there.

We offer archery lessons and courses in the New Forest, Hampshire and in Tolpuddle, Dorset.

Our archery range is progressive and accommodates 14 people shooting on the line at any 1 time. We are very keen on keeping people fully active and shooting for the whole session time, no having to share your go. John Hitchens: Aspects of Landscape

Southampton City Art Gallery
From: 13 Mar '20 10:00am -
To: 27 Jun '20 05:00pm

Aspects of Landscape showcases work by John Hitchens, created over a period of more than five decades.

The exhibition will trace the artists’ journey from early descriptive paintings to increasingly abstract ways of interpreting landscape, reducing its forms to lines, circles and patterns. In his recent paintings the artist has developed his own visual language which sets it apart from conventional abstract painting.

This development was greatly influenced by a period spent photographing landscape elements from the air, which enabled Hitchens to gain an awareness of the land as a two-dimensional composition. This is the first time such a complete overview of his work will be seen in one exhibition, including work that has never been shown in public before.

John Hitchens is one of four generations of artists in his family, both his grandfather Alfred Hitchens and his father Ivon Hitchens were also painters of landscapes. His son, Simon is a sculptor. A number of Ivon Hitchens’ paintings are held in the Gallery’s art collection.

COVID-19 Update - May & June Sailings Cancelled

Shieldhall is sorry to confirm that its planned sailings for the months of May and June 2020 have had to be cancelled with the ongoing uncertainty of the Covid-19 pandemic. Shieldhall was due to enter Dry Dock in April, but this journey has been postponed until later in the year. We hope conditions will allow us to continue with sailings during the summer, with a possible extension of the sailing programme beyond our current scheduled end date of September 13.

All ticket holders for our sailings in May and June will be contacted via email, and offered the options of switching their tickets to a sailing later in the year; holding their ticket money as a credit for 2021 sailings; making a donation to Shieldhall to allow the charity to best continue its work, or a refund.

With her winter maintenance programme all but complete, Shieldhall is set to celebrate her 65th birthday this year, looking to give passengers the opportunity to experience the magic of ‘steam at sea’. Our volunteer crew – many of whom are aged 70 years and upwards - are disappointed but understanding of the challenges we all face at this time. There is a ready commitment to maintaining Shieldhall so that we can resume her programme when conditions improve. We will look to keep our members and supporters updated with news via the Shieldhall website www.ss-shieldhall.co.uk, emails and social media.

We encourage everyone to keep up to date with the current Government & NHS advice and guidelines around Coronavirus by visiting the following link: www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19

Thank you for your understanding, patience and ongoing support which means so much to the charity. Stay safe and we hope to see you on board later in the year.

Meantime, if you have any questions or concerns please contact us at tickets@ss-shieldhall.co.uk

New Forest National Park COVID-19 Update

The New Forest National Park
From: 23 Mar '20 09:00am -
To: 30 Jun '20 05:00pm

18 April

Forest car parks and visitor facilities remain closed

Thanks to all those who are staying home this weekend.

Government restrictions are to stay local when exercising and use open spaces near your home where possible – do not travel unnecessarily. This will help stop the spread of Coronavirus and save lives. Forest car parks and visitor facilities remain closed until we can safely explore the National Park again.

8 April

Joint press release with New Forest District Council:

Stay away, stay safe, see you later

As the Easter weekend approaches, visitors and second homeowners are being asked to stay away from the New Forest and follow government rules to stay home and stay safe.

New Forest District Council Leader and National Park Authority member, Cllr Barry Rickman, said: ‘The Government’s priority is to save lives. The best way for everyone to protect themselves and others from illness is to stay at home and so we are reminding all visitors and second home-owners to please not visit the New Forest.

‘It is vital that you play your part in limiting the spread of the Coronavirus and helping to save lives. And if you are leaving your home for exercise once a day, please stay local and use open spaces near to your home.

‘We will love to welcome you back again later in the year. For now, stay home, stay safe.’

Visitor facilities including public toilets, BBQ areas, car parks, and campsites are closed to meet the Government’s restrictions to reduce non-essential travel.

Hampshire Police has said it will continue to be out this weekend to ensure social distancing and that everyone is staying safe, and officers will continue to engage with the public to ensure Government guidelines are adhered to.

New Forest National Park Authority Chairman Oliver Crosthwaite-Eyre said: ‘It is very important for us all to continue to observe the Government’s restrictions to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus. We must stay at home at this critical time, and avoid any temptation to travel to the New Forest, unless it’s an essential journey.’

Go New Forest is also supporting the Stay Home for now message: ‘We would normally love to see all our regular visitors, but we really need you to support Government advice to stay at home and stay safe. We all have a responsibility – visitors, visitor businesses and local residents – to heed government advice and help save lives. If you have a holiday booked in the coming weeks, please contact the provider directly. If you’re postponing a visit, we look forward to welcoming you in happier times.’

Essential travel guidance from Government:

‘Essential travel does not include visits to second homes, camp sites, caravan parks or similar, whether for isolation purposes or holidays. People should remain in their primary residence. Not taking these steps puts additional pressure on communities and services that are already at risk.’

23 March

Statement from Forestry England: Access to the New Forest

This weekend, right across the country we have seen large numbers of people visiting public outdoor spaces, and it has not always being able to achieve social distancing. Covid-19 means that this is a threat to people’s health.

Our priority is to keep the public and our staff safe and as a result we are in the process of closing all main car parks in the New Forest from today. The car parks affected are those at Bolderwood, Wilverley, Blackwater, Whitefield Moor, Anderwood, Hatchet Pond and New Forest Reptile Centre. All of our public facilities within the New Forest are already closed including public toilets, visitor cabins, and BBQ facilities. Campsites are also closed and we would like to remind people that wild camping is illegal anywhere on the New Forest or in its car parks.

Smaller car parks in the Forest remain open for now. We have taken the decision not to close these for several reasons. We are concerned that closures would lead to large amounts of parking on verges and open ground causing real and irreversible damage to the landscape. Parking at locations away from the network of tracks would also lead to large numbers of people walking across the open forest putting wildlife at huge risk, particularly as it’s the start of the ground nesting bird season in these areas.

We will keep the situation under constant review and may close all car parks with immediate effect if the government’s guidelines on social distancing are not being adhered to or if the advice from Public Health England changes. Local people still have access to the countryside but we ask everyone to ensure they follow government guidance on avoiding all non-essential travel and social distancing to help restrict the spread of coronavirus.

22 March

We ask people to please follow Government guidance around social distancing and non essential travel.

All Camping in the Forest campsites are now closed.

Stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives.

17 March

In line with Government advice, our reception is now closed and all events and meetings are cancelled or postponed.

However we can be contacted via email and phone.

We are aiming to process planning applications which have already been submitted and if you are submitting a new application, we are reviewing the services we will be able to deliver.

From: 04 Apr '20 12:00am -
To: 02 Sep '20 12:00am

April 2020 will see an exciting new addition at Marwell Zoo… the world exclusive toy brick event: SUPERSIZED!

The brand-new immersive adventure has been created with more than two million toy bricks and will include some of the deadliest and most deceptive creatures in the world, all blown up to enormous proportions. Follow the trail to discover more about each species and break the myth of these often-misunderstood creatures.

The larger than life brick adventure features up to 40 astonishing models of real-life creatures with an explosion of colour and size. From sneaky predators such as the fearless honey badger and venomous blue-ringed octopus, to the aptly named assassin bug, all creatures have been chosen for their colourful appearance in nature, unusual natural abilities and because they can be magnified to an eye-popping size. Guests will also be able to play games, build their own models and create toy brick graffiti.

The creative geniuses at BRICKLIVE say it will take their team of professional builders more than 10,000 hours to create the exclusive event.

The event will be on display at the zoo from 4 April to 2 September 2020. SUPERSIZED! will be included with general admission. Ticket prices cost from £18 per child (3-16 years) and £22 per adult, which include an optional donation. Children aged 2 and under go free and every penny spent at Marwell helps the charity support the zoo and its conservation projects in the UK and overseas.

From: 05 Apr '20 10:30am -
To: 04 Sep '20 03:30pm

Come and experience ‘A Date With Nature’ at the New Forest Reptile Centre.

Using the latest hi-tech gadgets you can look right into the tree-top nests of the New Forest Goshawk and watch their every move – from eggs hatching to food arriving and chicks leaving.

Want to find out more? Visit the New Forest Reptile Centre near Lyndhurst, where staff and volunteers are on hand to explain more about the bird’s behaviour and answer any questions as they have the live webcam on show to visitors.

You can also see unique wildlife viewed in ‘pods’ at the Centre, such as the reptiles and amphibians native to the New Forest. Discover the rare wildlife living in our National Park and learn how you can help protect our most vulnerable species.

Drop in for Wild Wednesdays during school holidays from 10.30am – 3.30pm, with reptile and bird quizzes, trails and activities.

A Date with Nature in the New Forest runs daily from Easter to the end of the summer holidays, 10.30am to 4pm. Entry to the Reptile Centre is free although donations for parking are welcome. The project is a partnership between us, the RSPB, Forestry Commission and Carnyx Wild.

Vintage Bus Days

Mid Hants Railway 'Watercress Line'
From: 03 May '20 11:30am -
To: 04 Oct '20 04:00pm

On the first Sunday of the month from May to October a FREE vintage bus service operates from Alresford Station.

You do not need to purchase a train ticket to ride this service.

The vintage bus leaves Alresford Station on a circular route through Bishop’s Sutton at the following times on a trip lasting 20 minutes:

11.30 12.00 12.30 13.00 13.30

then 14.30 15.00 15.30 16.00

Unfortunately, due to their age these buses do not have provision for wheelchairs.

This vintage bus service is operated by the Medstead Depot Omnibus Group, who are one of three groups under the Working Omnibus Museum Project Ltd, and their buses frequently visit running days and rallies around the South. MDOG is part of a charity established in the late 1980's which provides a storage depot for 18 vintage buses originally running bus services in the south of England. The buses are owned and maintained by individuals or small groups.

Don't forget the Alton Bus Rally in July every year; it's one of Britain's biggest bus rallies and running days.

Beaulieu COVID-19 Update

Beaulieu
From: 01 Jun '20 09:00am -
To: 31 Jul '20 05:00pm

Following Government advice, we have taken the very difficult decision to close the Beaulieu visitor attraction until further notice. We believe that this is the only suitable course of action, following the Prime Minister's latest guidelines on social distancing.

Our priority continues to be safeguarding the wellbeing of our visitors, staff and volunteers. We are supporting the measures to help beat coronavirus (Covid-19 ), so we can look forward to welcoming you back to Beaulieu later in the year.

Advance attraction ticket holders who haven't yet visited, but have tickets due to expire before the end of June will be contacted with further details next week.

Please continue to check our website and social media for updates and interesting conversation from the National Motor Museum and the rest of the Beaulieu attraction. To help entertain the children, we will be posting fun family activities - so join us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

New Forest Wildlife Park COVID-19 Update

New Forest Wildlife Park
From: 01 Jun '20 09:00am -
To: 31 Jul '20 05:00pm

Closed until further notice

The New Forest Wildlife Park is closed to guests but the daily work of caring and feeding the animals continues as usual for our excellent animals keepers. We have many endangered species and work within global breeding programmes to ensure a future for all the animals who share our planet. We are funded entirely by our visitors and as a result of closure we can no longer rely on those funds to care for all the animals and birds that live at the park.

We understand that as a nation we are all struggling to come to terms with changing situation we are living through but if there is anyway you feel you could help us continue to maintain the wildlife park so we can re-open in the near future and continue with our educational and conservation work it would be immensely appreciated.

Many visitors have approached us with kind wishes and offers of help and we are so grateful and your generosity will help us continue to care for our beautiful animals and so everyone can experience the pleasure of visiting us in the near future.

Please use the link to crowdfunded from our Facebook page.

or contact us at info@newforestwildlifepark.co.uk

A traditional Irish folk and ballad band, The Kilkennys are noted for their dynamic arrangements, energetic performances and charismatic rapport with audiences across the globe.

Picking up the mantle left by acts such as The Dubliners and The Clancy Brothers, the 4 piece group continue to conquer tour circuits in Europe and the U.S. In the past years The Kilkennys have shared the stage with renowned Irish artists such as Shane McGowan, Sharron Shannon and Finbar Furey. Continuing their hectic tour schedule 2016 saw the band perform on the main stage at Milwaukee Irish Fest - the largest Irish Festival in the world.

“The Kilkennys are a great band upholding the Irish Folk/Ballad tradition with a contemporary style. Matching the passion & stories with these songs. The Kilkennys live is a fantastic show” - Barry Stapleton, Milwaukee Irish Fest

The band was established between schoolmates and began touring the length and breadth of Ireland in 1998. In 2008 they decided to name themselves ‘The Kilkennys' after their beloved home, Kilkenny City. Now based in South East Ireland, the group have evolved through the years and are anchored by founding members Davey Cashin (vocals, mandolin, banjo, guitar, whistles), Tommy Mackey (bass, acoustic guitar, vocals), long time member Robbie Campion (banjo, guitar, madolin, vocals) and newest member Mick Martin ( bodhran, uilleann pipes, low whistles, guitar, vocals).

After releasing their live album and DVD ‘Meet The Kilkennys’, Radio and TV appearance soon followed, which included RTE’s Late Late Show, where they preformed their single ‘Shine on Kilkenny’ , an original song released to coincide with Kilkenny winning All Ireland hurling final for a forth year in a row, a sporting celebration also headlined by The Kilkennys. Their much acclaimed studio album ‘The Colour Of Freedom’ (2014) features a mix of original material and well known ballads like 'Rocky Road to Dublin’ and ‘South Australia’. The strong connection between the band and their music is showcased in this album, with compelling musicianship and pristine vocal harmonies.

Seeking to preserve their status for re-introducing Irish folk and ballads to a young audience while capturing the hearts of the more seasoned traditional music lover, The Kilkennys embark on their new show featuring new material, set to be released later in the year. The bands popularity continues to grow with every energy filled, toe tapping and hand clapping night of entertainment.

To: 11 Jun '20 04:00pm

Steamship Shieldhall is proud to have been invited to participate in the Poole Harbour Boat Show between Friday 12 and Sunday 14 June. As such, we will be offering two positional trips, to and from Poole, on Thursday 11 and Monday 15 June respectively (in addition to our positional trips in August for the Bournemouth Air Festival). With over 30,000 people in attendance in during 2017, 2018 and 2019, the show is the biggest-ever free to attend boat show on the South Coast. The three-day extravaganza will bring together a spectacular showcase of yachts and motor cruisers, marine equipment, water sports gear and clothing, with taster sessions, live music and fireworks to keep the whole family entertained! Shieldhall will be open alongside for visits during the opening hours of the show.

The positional sailing to Poole will see passengers make their own way back (coach transport may be booked – This can be booked below). See the sights of Southampton Water, The Needles, Hengistbury Head and Poole Harbour, passing Brownsea Island and Sandbanks. Shieldhall will berth at Poole Quay, close to Poole Pottery, an approx. 15 min walk from Poole Railway Station.

As part of your cruise, see the impressive engine room with its original steam engines at work and the bridge, with its traditional instruments and gleaming brasswork; admire the ship’s steam assisted steering gear (similar to that used on Titanic); talk to the Captain and our volunteer crew; listen to the informed commentary on the sights and sounds of Southampton Water and The Solent; pass close to the great ocean liners and container ships; walk the teak decks; relax in the Saloon with our wide range of refreshments including tea / coffee; real ale; a range of Titanic bottled beers; wine and hot and cold food, available on all trips.

The internationally acclaimed, Grammy-nominated vocalist, Stacey Kent, returns to the UK for a very select number of 2019 dates, featuring music from her latest album ‘I Know I Dream’ (Sony Music/Okeh).

With the release of her most ambitious project yet, her first orchestral album, and another worldwide tour, Stacey returns to The Concorde.

This beautiful collection of songs includes American Standards, Bossa Nova classics and Chansons, as well as original songs and reprises of some of Stacey's most loved repertoire - including numbers co-written by Nobel prizewinner Kazuo Ishiguro, whose songwriting partnership with Stacey has formed an essential plank of her repertoire.

With career sales approaching 2 million albums, Stacey’s 11th studio album, ‘I Know I Dream’, is a highlight not only for its breathtaking beauty but also for its assured expressiveness. The Album follows ‘Tenderly’ (2015), an intimate collaboration with Brazilian music master, Robert Menescal. Stacey's previous albums include, the Brazilian-flavored, ‘The Changing Lights’, (2013), ‘Dreamer In Concert’ (2011), recorded live in Paris at La Cigale, her all-French, ‘Raconte-moi’ (2010), and the Platinum-selling, Grammy-nominated, ‘Breakfast on the Morning Tram’ (2007).

"She has charm to burn, a smile that could give you hope in February and sings like nobody's business" The Wall Street Journal

"Stacey Kent has been quietly sitting on top of the world of jazz vocals, for many years" Jamie Cullum

Poole Boat Show 2020 - Open to the public alongside Poole Quay

SS Shieldhall
From: 12 Jun '20 09:00am -
To: 14 Jun '20 06:00pm

Following on from the success of the first five years, the sixth Poole Harbour Boat Show will be taking place from its award-winning home, Poole Quay Boat Haven, from Friday 12th - Sunday 14th June 2020.

With over 30,000 visitors at each of the last three shows, the show has gone from strength to strength and has built a strong following with many exhibitors having renewed each year since the first show in 2015. The show continues to be the biggest-ever free boat show on the South Coast, providing an opportunity for those who may not have been on the water before to get a feel of what’s on offer.

Event organisers Poole Harbour Commissioners (PHC) will welcome over 200 exhibitors across the quayside and marina; a showcase of yachts and motorboats of all sizes, RIBs, marine equipment and engines, clothing and water sports gear and activities.

For 2020 we are delighted to be welcoming the Shieldhall to the show for the first time! She will sail to Poole Quay from Southampton on Thursday 11th June and will remain alongside for the duration of the show. The Shieldhall will be open to the public from Friday 12th - Sunday 14th completely free of charge, so come on down over the weekend and check out Britain’s largest steam ship.

The three day extravaganza will also feature taster sessions, live music and fireworks to keep the whole family entertained! The ever-popular waterborne demos will be back for 2020 with the RNLI, Border Force and Poole Harbour Commissioners putting on fascinating displays to show what their work involves on a day-to-day basis.

Jim Stewart, Chief Executive of PHC, commented: “PHC has a commitment to the local and marine communities to generate positive activity in and around the harbour. The Commissioners and management team are proud to organise this event for Poole, to support the town’s bustling Quay and its businesses, and to encourage entry level and boating enthusiasts to visit.”

“I’d also like to thank all the sponsors who supported us in 2019. Without their generous support we couldn’t run the show and we are extremely grateful for their support which made last year’s show such a success”. Further details will be confirmed nearer the time so keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for more information!

Dan Haynes – Songwriters

The New Forest National Park
From: 12 Jun '20 07:30pm -
To: 12 Jun '20 09:30pm

Whether it’s in a cosy folk club still lost in the sixties, or a modern-day arena pulsing with energy, a great song never fails to capture and transport an audience. Yet whilst some artists merely manage the magic a handful of times, there are others who strike gold time and time again.

In this long-awaited, debut show Songwriters, Dan Haynes pays tribute to a host of songwriter legends that have inspired his music. From the epic George Harrison, Paul Simon and Don Mclean to the contemporary icons Ben Howard, Laura Marling and Bon Iver, this stunning concert is a must-see for all lovers of acoustic music.

Interwoven with his original music, this ‘’acoustic guitar masterclass’’ (Media Luchs, Germany) also received five-star reviews at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2019.

ODYSSEY

THE GLORY DAYS of top vocal group Odyssey, one of the most successful soul/disco acts of their era, culminated in the early 1980’s when they topped the charts with “Use It Up And Wear It Out”, scoring several other Top Ten hits in Britain and throughout the world.

The group actually started out being billed as “The Lopez Sisters” when there were three of them –Lillian, Louise, and Carmen. An agent spotted them at a concert and booked them for a five month European tour. When they returned to the States, Carmen left the trio to marry, but Lillian and Louise resolved to continue, and so recruited Tony Reynolds as a replacement.

From their debut album emerged their first smash single -“Native New Yorker”, an international hit late in 1977. Additionally, Lillian’s eldest son, Steven Collazo had become part of Odyssey behind the scenes, recording as a background vocalist, journeyman session musician and musical director for their live performances and tours. A couple of years later, the group cut their “Hang Together” album. It contained “Use It Up And Wear It Out”, while the flipside, “Don’t Tell Me, Tell Her” received major airplay on US Black Radio. In the UK, “Use It Up” shot to the top ten, followed by “If You’re Looking For A Way Out”, “Inside Out”, and the Lamont Dozier classic “Going Back To My Roots”, among others.

Performing around the UK, Europe and The Middle East through the 80’s and into the 90’s, the journey continued. In 1994, Steven moved up to co-front the group and produce new versions of the Odyssey classics while appearing with Lillian on television, touring the arenas, top hotels, clubs, major holiday resorts and festivals throughout the UK and Europe.

The founder and first voice of Odyssey, Lillian Lopez-Collazo Jackson, died of cancer on September 4th, 2012. Louise Lopez passed away from natural causes January 28th, 2015.

Mid Hants Railway 'Watercress Line'
From: 13 Jun '20 10:00am -
To: 14 Jun '20 05:00pm

Transport yourself back in time to the 1940s, against the backdrop of a Second World War railway, to experience the 'Blitz Spirit'.

War On The Line will feature civilian and military re-enactors, vintage vehicles, live music, dancing and stalls selling retro wares.

Each station will provide visitors with a different experience of life in wartime Britain, from running an RAF plotting room, to dancing alongside ‘Now That’s Jive Company B’.

At Ropley Station, visitors will also be able to undergo a 40s makeover at Pearl’s Pin-up Parlour and enjoy an exciting Spitfire flypast, subject to weather conditions.

War on the Line is as much about reliving this period as it is enjoying the rush of a steam engine. Whether you want to get involved and dress up in your own period costume, or simply come along and soak up the atmosphere, War on the Line promises to be a truly unique and memorable experience.

Adding to the event, a self-guided walk will take visitors to key points across Alresford which have links to the American troops who were stationed in the town in the run up to D-Day.

SOUL ii SOUL

Back In The Day

"We're from the days when a number 14 bus and a supermarket trolley got us around." Jazzie B remembers the lengths he and a school friend used to go to play dances with their first sound system when they were just 13 years old. It sums up the determination, resourcefulness and a love for music, that got Soul II Soul where it is today.

Their first North London sound system, Jah Rico, played mainly reggae, but after three years changed the vibe to more soul and funk and Soul II Soul was born. "We came up with the name not just because of the music we played, it also stood for Daddae and myself - two souls moving together. We've always had that kind of relationship – there are not many words exchanged between us, but everything that’s happened has been very much in tandem."

Soul II Soul quickly achieved a name in their community, but were in no position to give up the day jobs, and at age 18, Jazzie was working for cockney pop legend Tommy Steele, as a tape operator. He found himself one of the few black people working in London’s recording studio and recalls how this shaped his attitude: "It made me vexed in one way, but it made me see that there are parts of the industry that we're not taking care of because we always want to be so upfront." As Soul II Soul grew, Jazzie was determined to create a dancefloor environment that would appeal across the board.

Movin' Forward

Soul II Soul’s dances had been reflecting what was occurring naturally in London; kids of all races had grown up together and were now raving together. By the mid-1980s the warehouse scene was in full swing, vibrant and underground, removed from the constraints of the mainstream – a natural fit for Soul II Soul’s creativity: "We were very arty as an early sound. We never had conventional speakers, we used pyrotechnics in a dance, we had banners and strobes in a house party!"

Nothing summed them and their crowd up better than their regular Sunday night spot at the now legendary Africa Centre in London's Covent Garden. This was truly the Soul II Soul experience, which, unlike other sound systems on the same circuit, wasn't just about the big name DJs, it was about a vibe. Jazzie remembers it as being unique: "You had people from all walks of life at the Africa Centre. A very eclectic crowd. It was like Benetton down there!"

The Africa Centre was a game changer for Soul II Soul; for British black music; and for the nation’s youth culture in general. It caught the attention of Virgin Records, who signed them as an act in 1988, catapulting them into a tornado of success. The Soul II Soul sound was original, new, fresh, and infectious – above all, though, it was a UK thing. It represented what was going on all around it and alienated nobody. There was the Soul II Soul lifestyle too, with three shops in London selling clothing emblazoned with the Funki Dred logo, plus all manner of branded merchandising including clocks and jewellery. They even had a slogan "A happy face, a thumpin' bass, for a lovin' race."

Popular Demand

There were the resident club nights all over the world; live concert tours; radio and TV appearances; Jazzie had his own show on London's Kiss FM and there was even an Adventures of the Funki Dreds comic book. And, of course, Soul II Soul enjoyed the type of chart success – notably with Keep On Movin' and 'Back To Life' – that made them household names all over the world.

To date Soul II Soul have sold over 10 million albums in over 35 territories worldwide and have product on over 200 compilation CDs while Jazzie has accreditation on over 35 million albums in over 100 territories. They’ve performed in over 20 countries, and appeared at some of the most famous venues in the world including Wembley and New York's Universal Ample Theatre. America embraced Soul II Soul to such a degree, in 1990 they picked up two Grammy's. Jazzie was given the keys to seven cities in the US, including LA and New York, and the NAACP has honoured him. There's even a Soul II Soul day over there.

Into more recent times, musically Soul II Soul has kept itself contemporary – "Keep On Movin'' was used for the high profile Renault Clio television ads. Mary J. Blige and Sean Kingston have both released cover versions of "Back To Life'; while Beverly Knight released her version of "FairPlay" in 2011. A year later, "Back to Life" was featured in the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics.

In 2008 there was royal recognition for the Funki Dreds when, after thirty years of dedication, Jazzie was awarded an OBE for services to music. The first sound man to be honoured by Her Majesty the Queen, and probably the most deserved investiture ever. Then in the same year Jazzie won the Ivor Novello Award for inspiration, and as he stepped up to accept the trophy he was announced as "the man who gave British black music a soul of its own". 2012 saw Soul II Soul receive the PRS for Music Heritage Award with a special plaque erected on The Electric (formerly The Fridge) in Brixton, where the group played their first live gig in 1991.

Bringing It Back Home

2013 has been the year it came back home for Soul II Soul – literally. In spring the clothing range’s Classics Collection took original artwork from the Funki Dred archives to reprint on modern fabrics, cut to contemporary shapes, designed around the rhythms of the dance. Jazzie himself was honoured by his birthplace – Finsbury Park – when local residents selected three distinguished locals of the area for their contribution and inspiration to the community. An ironwork sculpture of him now stands at the Portrait Bench by the station forecourt, alongside suffragette Edith Garrud and health pioneer Florence Keen. The year finished on a high, when, as curtain-raiser to Soul II Soul’s 25th Anniversary in 2014, they performed a series of full band, old school-style gigs all over the UK.

For the man who considers himself as a "pleasure giver", it's paramount to Jazzie to remain a part of the club scene. "Being a sound system is very important to me, I still DJ in clubs. And the label is run like a sound system. It's all exactly the same as before, except that the times have changed. Technically we are still a sound system. The singers and artists are our MCs, and instead of mix tapes we now make records and CDs."

Jazzie B no longer borrows supermarket trolleys and hasn't seen the inside of a number 14 bus for a while, but the sound system mentality is still very much at the root of Soul II Soul, keeping him in touch with their continually evolving audience.

One way trip to Southampton - Sailing from Poole Quay

SS Shieldhall
From: 15 Jun '20 12:00pm -
To: 15 Jun '20 06:00pm

See the sights of Poole Harbour, passing Brownsea Island and Sandbanks, Old Harry Rocks, Hengistbury Head, The Needles and Southampton Water.

As part of your cruise, see the impressive engine room with its original steam engines at work and the bridge, with its traditional instruments and gleaming brasswork; admire the ship’s steam assisted steering gear (similar to that used on Titanic); talk to the Captain and our volunteer crew; pass close to the great ocean liners and container ships; walk the teak decks; relax in the Saloon with our wide range of refreshments including tea / coffee; real ale; a range of Titanic bottled beers; wine and hot and cold food, available on all trips.

Children will have fun with our interactive Shieldhall Log Book, collecting stickers from various stations on board!

Coach return trip: Adults £14.00 children £7.00

TOP TIP FOR GROUPS: This is a one-way trip, and as such is popular with groups and tour operators. Drop-off at the Shieldhall in Southampton, with the Coach Driver picking up at Southampton Docks later in the day. Changing scenery throughout the trip with informed commentary of the sights.

THE BLUES BAND

The individual members of The Blues Band were already held in admiration by generations of rhythm & blues fans when they formed back in 1979. Almost two and a half decades and over 16 albums later they continue to add to their growing army of followers, and it's not unheard of to find three generations from the same family at a gig.

The band are today acknowledged throughout Europe and beyond as being amongst the very finest purveyors of rhythm & blues. They have inspired numerous other blues bands, many of which have come and gone …The Blues Band have remained a constant, increasingly popular fixture, however, and all with only a modicum of help from the record business – as Gary's oft quoted comment states "the music industry doesn't bother us and we don't bother them."

This independent streak goes right back to their early days when in an unusual move the band "bootlegged" their own first album – certain copies of which are now collector's items. The 'bootlegging' came about because, having recorded their first album, the so called 'major label' which was to release it changed their minds and the band didn't have the cash to pay the studio bill. So they got 1000 copies pressed up, mastered from a copy tape that they had, signed the plain white numbered sleeves and sold them at gigs & via mail order etc. Only then did another 'major label' pick up the album and release it widely. It's a credit to both the band's talent and to their many thousands of fans' loyalty and support that they have since sustained such a long career, and brings into question the oft-spoken phrase by parents despairing of their aspiring musical offspring, "When are you going to get yourself a proper job?"

Such successful musical mavericks are fairly rare and are borne more from word-of-mouth than promotional hype. Either way they still have to cut the mustard. These boys have real feel – for their music, for their audience and for each other. Playing with maturity and passion is second nature to all of them .... Paul Jones has devoted much of a creative career spanning almost 40 years to this eternal, inspiring form - the very base and roots of rock & roll ..... Dave Kelly, with his late, great sister, Jo-Ann, introduced a whole generation to the works of Memphis Minnie, Son House, Robert Johnson and Mississippi Fred McDowell ...... the blues bit Tom McGuinness in the late '50s and has never let go - the same sharp, tight grip which still holds Rob Townsend and Gary Fletcher within its spell. So here they are, as enthusiastic as ever - Britain's finest, most skilled practitioners in the art of the blues. The Blues Band.

Edwina’s beautifully written songs, charming stage presence, and voice of an angel have won her a reputation as a true natural talent of gentle folk-Americana. She has opened numerous shows for Jools Holland and Van Morrison as well as her own gigs, playing stages everywhere from Glastonbury Festival to The Royal Albert Hall.

The title track of her album ‘Pour Me A Drink’ was covered by Nanci Griffith who calls her ‘the sweetest voice in England,’ and her cover of the Randy Newman song ‘Feels Like Home’ was featured in the Cameron Diaz film ‘My Sister’s Keeper’ and has since had over eight million plays on You Tube.

‘Edwina is a haunting honeyed solo songwriter‘ (The Guardian)

‘Sweet-voiced songwriter who has a fine line in gentle, country-tinged material’ (Time Out)

‘A very talented young lady.’ Michael Parkinson

“A wonderful young woman, so gifted and full of song, with a voice that is as sweet as the angels” Nanci Griffith

To: 21 Jun '20 06:00pm

An ideal gift for Father’s Day – a cruise on Steamship Shieldhall! Head down Southampton Water to the Solent; enjoy the excellent Shieldhall Stompers Jazz band and meet the designer of the QM2 Stephen Payne. On our return to our berth, we will steam by the departing Queen Mary 2, Inependence of the Seas and Regal Princess – always the chance to sound our whistle and play the ‘Shieldhall Organ’!

Seamanship Experience Day

SS Shieldhall
From: 30 Jun '20 10:00am -
To: 30 Sep '20 06:00pm

Dates

No dates are currently planned at this time. However if you are interested in a course please contact us. Details can be found below.

About the course

After a successful “pilot” training day, a new course has been designed which we believe will of interest to all.

We present an opportunity of a lifetime to come onboard an absolutely unique heritage steamship and to see and learn something of the intricacies of seamanship that allow this remarkable vessel to be sailed on her many coastal voyages. During the day you will visit the bridge to see how the ship is navigated, learn how to read a chart and to lay off a course, find out how an "imaginary" ship board fire is dealt with, work with ropes and perhaps learn some really useful knots, visit the machinery spaces to see the mighty triple expansion steam engines and finally for those wishing to have a go, a thrilling drive on the River Itchen in our rescue RIB.

These experience days will take place on the preserved historic steam ship “Shieldhall” (1,792 g.r.t)

The Price

The cost to take part in this exciting new training venture is just £30.00 for adults or £15 for accompanying under 18s. Prices include VAT at 20%.

NB: We believe that this event is not suitable for anyone under 12.

Enquiries

Please contact our Youth Training Coordinator. He can be contacted by emailing inform@ss-shieldhall.co.uk

Shane Joyce

The New Forest National Park
From: 02 Jul '20 07:30pm -
To: 02 Jul '20 09:30pm

At an early age, Shane Joyce was influenced by the great songsmiths Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen and the ninety-mile-an-hour writings of beat poets Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg.
At fifteen, he picked up his first guitar… an old nylon string, and soon after the songs started to tumble out of him.
And they have been coming ever since.

Though still strongly influenced by those folk and beat heroes of his past, in recent years, Shane has been able to gain new influence from a multitude of other facets of writing, so that everything from Hemingway to T. S. Eliot to more recent luminaries such as Phosphorescent,Fionn Regan and Laura Marling may muscle their way into Shane’s work.

To date Shane has toured throughout Ireland, the UK, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Finland.

In Jan 2018, Hotpress Magazine announced Shane as one of their “one’s to watch for 2018”.

2019 is set to be another big year for Shane as he begins work on a new album and is set to play festivals and shows throughout Ireland and Europe.

“An exceedingly talented singer-songwriter” – Hot Press Magazine

“deep and poetic..”
“nothing short of beautiful..” – Nitelife Magazine

“…a serious folk song-writer who, thankfully, has something to say.” – Remy’s Music and Film

Cruise to the Nab Tower and mark Shieldhall's 65th birthday - Sailing from Southampton

SS Shieldhall
From: 05 Jul '20 10:00am -
To: 05 Jul '20 06:00pm

Shieldhall is 65 years young in 2020, having been launched on the River Clyde, Glasgow, on the 7th July 1955. Shieldhall was in the service of the Glasgow Corporation, where she carried treated sludge out to deep water south of Garroch Head off the Isle of Bute. Sold to Southern Water in 1977, Shieldhall continued her sludge disposal role before rising costs saw her withdrawn from service and threatened for scrap, before being purchased by the Solent Steam Packet Charity, who continue to operate Shieldhall today.

Join the volunteer Shieldhall crew as we mark her 65th birthday by journeying out to the Eastern Solent and the near mythical Nab Tower, recreating the journey Shieldhall carried out for Southern Water during the mid-1980s, when she visited the nearby ‘dumping grounds’. On your return pass the cruise ship Arcadia - always the chance to sound our whistle and play the ‘Shieldhall Organ’!

The New Forest Tour – helping you and helping our environment

The New Forest Tour is a key part of our aim to encourage more people to leave their cars at home. Nearly 40,000 people explore the New Forest National Park on the New Forest Tour bus instead of by car each summer, saving several thousand private car miles.

The Tour stops at local cycle hire centres within the Forest. With each Tour able to carry up to four bikes, it gives access to the area’s quiet country lanes and 100 miles of waymarked cycle tracks.

The Tour is operated by morebus in partnership with the New Forest National Park Authority and is sponsored by local businesses.

DEAN FRIEDMAN

Don't miss this rare performance by this legendary singer-songwriter. Hear hits like Ariel, Lucky Stars, Lydia and McDonald's Girl... live!
Hailed by critics and fans alike as a one of the finest songwriters of his generation, Dean Friedman has achieved legendary, pop-icon status for chart-topping hits, Ariel, Lucky Stars, Lydia, McDonald’s Girl and more.

Friedman returns to the stage armed with a stunning collection of his insightful and compelling, true-to-life ‘story songs’ - songs of pathos and humor that deal with family, friends, neighbors, work and the seemingly trivial, yet ultimately essential stuff of everyday life.

"Soundtrack of our lives!" – NYTimes; "Songsmith extraordinaire!” – MusicWeek; “Dean Friedman is entirely unique and utterly brilliant” – ThreeWeeks; “Stunning Musicianship!” - Hot Press; "One of the true greats of American music!" - Liverpool Sound and Vision

A consummate entertainer, Friedman will be performing solo, on guitar and keyboard, featuring songs from throughout his four-decade career, including familiar, radio hits and fan favorites, drawn from his eight studio albums. Invite family and friends and join Friedman for an evening of powerful, poignant and hilarious songs about the ordinary and extraordinary lives we share.

Boothby Graffoe is a multi-talented, darkly hilarious, grade A British eccentric, who can twist your funny bone one minute, and break your heart the next. A musical comedy act who is more musical than most musicians, and funnier than most comedians.' - Stewart Lee 'If I had to compare him to anyone, it would be Spike Milligan.' - Omid Djalili

Cliff As If and the Golden Shadows is an authentic tribute to the music of Cliff Richard and the Shadows.

Songs performed are from the late 50’s to the mid 60’s, sometimes known as the golden period. All music is performed fully live (no backing tracks) by experienced and passionate performers using authentic equipment and instruments to recreate the early British rock ‘n’ roll sound. Multiple costume changes all add to the show.

They cover the full spectrum of Cliff and the Shadows music in the period ranging from the early rock ‘n’ roll hits ‘Move It’ and ‘Dynamite’, pop classics ‘Do You Wanna Dance’ and ‘Livin’ Doll’, movie hits ‘Summer Holiday’, ‘Dancing Shoes’, ‘The Young Ones’, and not forgetting some of the classic Shadows instrumental hit tunes such as ‘Apache’, ‘Wonderful Land’ and ‘Foot Tapper’.

Their show is filled with a variety of great music, comedy and laughter and audience participation is encouraged to join in with the fun.

You are guaranteed a great night reminiscing the wonderful musical back catalogue of Cliff Richard and the Shadows.

Blitz weekend

Royal Armouries Fort Nelson
From: 25 Jul '20 10:00am -
To: 26 Jul '20 05:00pm

Our 2020 programme of events focuses on the 1940s, reflecting life at Fort Nelson and the local area during the Second World War.

Come and find out how the Fort played its part in defending the south coast and how ordinary families did their bit for King and country.

The naval dockyard at Portsmouth was a key target for the German bombers during the air raids of 1940-41.

Discover your local history and how Fort Nelson protected the port and played its part in supplying the anti-aircraft gun emplacements up and down the coast.

The Fort will be packed with military vehicles, costumed characters and living history displays. There will also be talks, tours and live gun-firings.

The Second World War collection at Fort Nelson

The Fort was an Equipment Ammunition Magazine (EAM) throughout the war. The ammunition stored at the Fort was used in anti-aircraft batteries in the Portsmouth area, including the heavy anti-aircraft battery at nearby Monument Farm. The Fort is one of only ten EAMs to survive from the period.

The Royal Armouries’ extensive collection of artillery and historic cannon features several key British and German Second World War guns.

The New Forest National Park
From: 25 Jul '20 06:00pm -
To: 25 Jul '20 08:00pm

The Slapstick Picnic would like to cordially invite you to its inaugural summer tea party, where marvellous feats of performance and culinary capers await. Over tea and cucumber sandwiches, we ask that you prepare to witness the impossible - the entirety of Oscar Wilde’s classic play of manners, affairs and handbags being performed by just two rather dashing entertainers.

As we are expecting a rather voluminous crowd in the outdoors, we do request that you bear your own seats, picnic blankets and filled hampers to the proceedings, and wear attire suitable for the meteorological conditions. It shall be an extraordinary family gathering, and we should not consider it complete without your presence.

Yours in anticipation,

The Slapstick Picnic

Outdoor theatre at Furzey Gardens is back with this hilarious adaptation of Oscar Wilde's classic play brought to you by the producers of The Handlebards.

TOTALLY TINA

Justine has been singing professionally for over 27 years now and has worked extensively in theatres and on national TV, she is also a much sought after session vocalist for some of the biggest record labels in the UK.

Justineriddoch.com

In her early career she could be seen treading the familiar cabaret scene as a dynamic vocalist and could boast knowing over 5000 songs, becoming a human juke box at venues.

In 2002 that her career would change direction. After winning ITV’s “Stars in their Eyes” as Anastacia, her tribute show “Justine is Anastacia” was in great demand and she spent the next 6 years performing as her around the world. When Anastacia stopped releasing albums and her popularity waned, it was time to change direction again.

Having been told on many occasions she really sounded like Tina Turner, Justine set herself the challenge to become the closest copy she could be. But this was going to take some transformation! After hours of scrutinising video footage, watching mannerisms and movements, hand making the all important wig, deciding which costumes to copy, listening to patter and hundreds of versions of the same songs from different decades, Totally TINA was created.

SHOWADDYWADDY

One of the finest rock & roll bands of the 1970s, Showaddywaddy also proved to be one of the most successful and enduring. The group entered and won television's "New Faces” talent show in 1974. Their many hits include, "When”, "I Wonder Why”, "Pretty Little Angel Eyes”, "A Little Bit of Soap”, "Hey Rock And Roll”, "Rock 'n' Roll Lady”, as well as several covers that include Eddie Cochran’s "Three Steps to Heaven”, Buddy Holly's "Heartbeat”, Sam Cooke's "Chain Gang”, interspersed with Showaddywaddy's own note and stylistically perfect originals. "Under the Moon of Love” gave the group their first British number 1 hit in 1976. They continued racking up further hits into the early '80s, even presiding over (and outliving) a whole new generation of rock & roll revival acts!

Chris Helme (The Seahorses)

The New Forest National Park
From: 15 Aug '20 07:30pm -
To: 15 Aug '20 09:30pm

Rising to fame in the 1990s as frontman of indie band The Seahorses singer-songwriter Chris Helme is now producing acclaimed folk-infused tracks as a solo artist, including with a new album due for release early 2020.

His enviable back catalogue includes Britpop classics such as ‘Love is the Law’ and ‘Blinded by the Sun’ from his time with John Squires’ post-Stone Roses band, The Seahorses. But beyond these well-loved indie hits, Helme has matured into a songwriter of regard for noir-tinged folk gems blistering with emotion.

Previous album, ‘The Rookery’ – produced by Sam Forrest (Nine Black Alps, Sewage Farm) – drew critical praise on release, with Uncut describing it as, “echoing the fragility of Gram Parsons, while flirting with the rustic side of Neil Young” and his latest work is set for a similar reception.

Long-awaited, his forthcoming album builds on this tone. With a number of ‘70s folk and song writing touch points across his works – Tim Buckley, Van Morrison, and Jackson Browne – it is the melody and imagination as much as the intricate guitar interplay and orchestration, which leads to lush, blossoming climaxes to hold audiences spellbound. Lyrically Helme has a knack for mixing light and dark, and for poetic description which remains relatable to resonate deeply, his matured vocal uncovering new feeling in whichever track he turns his attention to.

From rousing sing-a-longs of Britpop classics to underrated indie-folk gems, Chris Helme is among the finest singer-songwriters on the circuit today, and the release of long-awaited new material should only confirm his reputation and give audiences fresh favourites to enjoy alongside his indie classics.

RU40

Playing all the classic hits from “Red Red Wine” to “Rat In The Kitchen”, from “Food For Thought” to “One In Ten” and beyond! RU40 have headlined in major venues and festivals across the South, entertaining reggae fans and ensuring they sing along to “Cherry O”, “Homely Girl”,” Here I am Baby” “Kingston Town” and many more of UB40’s string of hits. In a very successful career, UB40 had over 50 UK charting singles and sold over 70 million worldwide. They had two No.1’s in the USA (Red Red Wine, Can’t Help Falling in Love) and toured the world. It takes a special group of musicians to authentically re-create the distinctive UB40 sound and the members of RU40 have many years of experience playing reggae and many other styles. The roots of RU40 go back as far as UB40 itself to 1979 when Danny Smith, Roy Brown and Martin Brisland formed Dub’allup – a very successful band that played original reggae and dub music. The initial band lasted till 1987 still reforming and playing at times over the years. At the turn of the new millennium it was decided to use their long experience of playing reggae music to play the UB40 songbook. RU40 has built a deserved reputation as an excting live band in its own right with charismatic lead singer Danny ensuring audiences dance and sing along to their favourite tunes. It is no exaggeration to say the Danny sounds more like Ali Campbell than the man himself! The RU40 line up comprises Danny Smith (guitar and vox); Roy Brown (bass and vox); Tim Smart (drums); Martin Brisland (keys); Andy Powles (keys, guitar and vox); Bogdan Dudzik (sax) and Julian Caesar (percussion and vox).

SHAKATAK

Shakatak have enjoyed a level of success and career longevity rarely paralleled in contemporary music – but then Shakatak is a particularly unusual group. Because of the nature of their music, their fan base is one that is far reaching while always retaining an ‘underground element’. This paradox sees the band, who are known primarily as serious jazz/funk musicians, enjoying both high ‘cult’ status and instant recognition as a household name.
