From: 28 Jul '18 10:00am -
To: 29 Jan '20 04:30pm

As a centre we are aim is to help the community we serve in anyway possible. Management and retailers have recently undertaken an amazing awareness training session by a Dementia Friends Champion to help us understand some of the challenges faced by people who are living with dementia, autism or other sensory issues whilst shopping with us.

With this in mind we have introduced Sensory Sundays every last Sunday in each month.

These changes  we have introduced such as requesting the stores reduce the volume of their music and security/cleaning staff to be available to assist wherever possible. We really hope that this will help make a difference and be more inclusive. Very much like to involve our community as a focus group, to feedback any of the issues they find which makes shopping a challenge. If you would like to be involved in this please contact us for more information.

This will be every Sunday throughout the year!

We offer archery lessons and courses in the New Forest, Hampshire and in Tolpuddle, Dorset.

Our archery range is progressive and accommodates 14 people shooting on the line at any 1 time. We are very keen on keeping people fully active and shooting for the whole session time, no having to share your go. Treasure boxes Fun activities for pre-schoolers

Royal Armouries Fort Nelson
From: 14 Apr '19 10:00am -
To: 31 Dec '19 04:00pm

Our range of treasure boxes have been developed with the needs of little learners in mind.

Each treasure box contains a selection of toys, stories and suggested activities designed to provide hands-on fun for inquisitive pre-schoolers (0-4 years). These boxes are designed to be used independently by parents/carers with their children.

There are 3 different treasure boxes to choose from:

Florence’s travelling trunk

This treasure box will help you explore the Fort’s hospital gallery. Find out what hospitals were like before Florence Nightingale made her reforms and how they changed afterwards. Play at being doctors and patients in our replica beds. This box contains medical themed books, toys and activities. Lots of fun for our next generation of doctors and nurses.

Scales and tales

The Art of Artillery gallery is home to the amazing dragon gun and the terrific tiger mortar. The scales and tales treasure box contains dragon and tiger themed books, soft toys and musical instruments to help you and your children bring history to life.

Sergeant Dobson’s kitchen

This treasure box will help you explore the Fort’s authentic garrison kitchen. Find out what the soldiers would have eaten in Victorian times, then have a go at making your own feast. This box contains food themed books, toys and activities – loads of clean cookery fun for budding chefs!

Price: Museum admission and use of the treasure boxes is free.

Availability and booking

The boxes are available every day. Simply request a treasure box at the visitor centre on arrival at the museum. A member of staff will provide you with a map, which will lead you to the relevant box, plus a code to open the lock.

Treasure boxes are issued on a first come, first served basis and are subject to availability. During busy periods there may be a time limit on usage.

Royal Victoria Country Park
From: 16 Apr '19 11:00am -
To: 31 Oct '19 03:30pm

Royal Victoria Country Park was once the site of the world’s largest hospital, now only the iconic chapel remains

The Royal Victoria Hospital was built in 1856 and served the British military for over a century. As the British Army’s first purpose built hospital, Royal Victoria was a unique and ambitious project which would help change the face of the medical world.

The chapel is all that remains of the quarter mile long hospital and is home to our interesting heritage exhibition which gives people the opportunity to learn all about the history of the military hospital and see photographs and relics from the site's fascinating past.

The Chapel conservation works

Lottery funded

Thanks to grants from Hampshire County Council and Heritage Lottery Funding, the Park’s historic buildings and heritage have been restored. The project included conservation work to the original façade of the chapel and the removal of the 1980 extension. There is a new pavilion to the side of the chapel with a kiosk, toilets and offices, providing facilities for the chapel to host music and cultural events in the evenings. Around the park are points of information explaining the size of the hospital and its historical significance.

The project was completed in the summer of 2018; the chapel now offers public access all year round, five days a week - including the tower and gallery.

Tower tours

The 150ft tower of the Royal Victoria Chapel is a historic landmark that has stood over Southampton Water since 1856. It offers breath-taking panoramic views across Royal Victoria Country Park, the Solent and beyond.

Now, following a major conservation project, you can climb the 109 steps to the top of the Tower and marvel at the spectacular views.

Thanks to the generous support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, Hampshire County Council have completed a major conservation and restoration project which has seen the Royal Victoria Chapel returned to its Victorian splendour.

All income generated through Tower Visits support the running costs of the Royal Victoria Chapel.

Tropical Butterfly House

New Forest Wildlife Park
From: 14 Jun '19 10:00am -
To: 31 Oct '19 04:00pm

The Tropical Butterfly House is currently closed for the winter but will be open till 31st October.

In the pupae emerging box you can watch the pupa wiggle and move until the pupa split open to allow the adult butterfly to emerge. It takes many hours for its wings to dry and be ready to release into the butterfly house.

The exotic adult butterflies are colourful as they enjoy the warmth of the Tropical Butterfly House.

You may be lucky and see some butterfly eggs and/or caterpillars on the underside of the leaves (especially the banana leaves).

Can you find one of the many stick insects in the butterfly house?

Southampton Philharmonic – Verdi’s Requiem

Winchester Cathedral
From: 22 Jun '19 07:30pm -
To: 22 Jun '19 09:30pm

Few choral works have captured the public imagination in the way that Verdi's Requiem has. This monumental piece is unashamedly theatrical in style, with moments of great tenderness and simplicity juxtaposed with passages of the most powerful and thrilling intensity. The soaring, lyrical melodies, which lie perfectly for the human voice; the scintillating orchestration, and the work's extraordinary dramatic and emotional depth – all contribute to the Requiem's status as one of the icons of Western choral music.

To communicate these dramatic extremes to full effect, Southampton Philharmonic Choir and the Southampton University Philharmonic Choir will perform without scores. It's an experience not to be missed! Performing with the choirs will be the New London Sinfonia and four professional soloists, and the whole ensemble will be under the baton of the Phil's professional conductor, David Gibson.

Keith Betton, Chairman and County Recorder of the Hampshire Ornithological Society, is a birdwatcher, writer and broadcaster. He has studied Peregrines for almost ten years and leads a team of enthusiasts who have helped them to return to Winchester and the rest of Hampshire. In a beautifully illustrated talk, he will explain how the world's fastest bird lives and thrives alongside us, and how for many years their very existence in the UK was on a knife-edge. Afterwards, he and a team of volunteers will look for where the Peregrines are perched and will use high-powered optical equipment to show them to attendees.

Tickets are £5 for adults and £3 for children under 16 (+ booking fee). Available online, by phone (01962 857275) or at the Cathedral Box Office.

Funds raised from this talk will go into maintaining the nesting site.

Round the Island Yacht Race and 5 cruise ships depart - Sailing from Southampton

Saturday 29th June 2019, 10:00 - 18:00

Spend a leisurely day on the Solent, enjoying the spectacle of the Round the Island Yacht Race from the great viewing platform of the Shieldhall! The race regularly attracts over 1,700 boats and around 16,000 sailors, making it one of the largest yacht races in the world and the fourth largest participation sporting event in the UK after the London Marathon and the Great North and South Runs.

On our return to berth enjoy witnessing the spectacle of 5 cruise ships depart the port of Southampton – the Azura, Braemar, Britannia, Independence of the Seas and Sapphire Princess - always the chance to sound our whistle and play the ‘Shieldhall Organ’!

As part of your cruise, see the impressive engine room with its original steam engines at work and the bridge, with its traditional instruments and gleaming brasswork; admire the ship’s steam assisted steering gear (similar to that used on Titanic); talk to the Captain and our volunteer crew; listen to the informed commentary on the sights and sounds of Southampton Water and The Solent; pass close to the great ocean liners and container ships; walk the teak decks; relax in the Saloon with our wide range of refreshments including tea / coffee; real ale; a range of Titanic bottled beers; wine and hot and cold food, available on all trips.

Recovering Forgotten Lives, The Historians Task Today – Professor Roger Richardson

Winchester Cathedral
From: 02 Jul '19 07:00pm -
To: 02 Jul '19 09:00pm

Traditionally, history has been a top-down, 'snobbish' subject interested chiefly in leaders of different kinds. Now, however, historians are bringing to life those in the past who have been ignored or neglected - among them women, workers of all kinds and children.

Using some local examples, this lecture illustrates the historian's new agenda.

Professor Roger Richardson, Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Winchester.

Alongside this will be masterpieces by composers from Spain and Portugal, and music that emerged from their New World colonies in the 16th and 17th Centuries, fusing the culmination of late Renaissance European music with indigenous and Creole influences.

Winchester Festival: A Fruitful Season – Keats in Winchester

Winchester Cathedral
From: 06 Jul '19 03:00pm -
To: 06 Jul '19 05:00pm

John Keats is one of England’s favourite poets. In these performances, 2TimeTheatre presents a play for voices by Cecily O’Neill, celebrating Keats’ visit to Winchester in 1819. Based on Keats’ letters and poems, the script includes delightful descriptions of Winchester and of the writing of his most popular poem Ode to Autumn. It traces Keats’ obsessive love for his ‘Bright Star’ Fanny Brawne, his attempts to write a successful tragedy with his friend Charles Armitage Brown, and his increasing ill health. Performed by professional actors, and with original music, the play is introduced by Professor Christopher Mulvey.

To Catch a King

In January 1649, Charles I was beheaded on the block in Whitehall and Britain became a republic.

Two years later, his son, the future Charles II, returned from France with an army seeking to regain the throne. The Royalists were overthrown by Cromwell’s forces at Worcester and Charles II was forced to flee with a vast sum on his head.

In this talk, bestselling author and historian Earl Spencer recounts the true story of one of the greatest escapes in British history.

Vietnam: An Epic History of a Tragic War

Max Hastings ambitiously re-tells the story of the Vietnamese war with the benefit of vivid personal memories: firstly reporting in 1967–68 from the United States, then through successive assignments in Indochina for newspapers and BBC TV. In his book, he explores a huge range of sources to describe, from both sides, the epic conflict in which between two and three million people (58,000 of them Americans) perished between 1945 and 1975.

Max Hastings is the author of twenty-six books, most of which are about conflict. Between 1986 and 2002 he was also Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Telegraph and then Editor of the Evening Standard.

Supported by Mrs Anne Fairey and Colonel David Parker

Christopher McKay is a former Hampshire Young Musician winner, now forging a successful professional career. The concert will open with the rich colours of Brahms’ St. Anthony Variations, a work performed too infrequently, and close with Beethoven’s Symphony No.7, one of his most exhilarating works, described by Wagner as ‘the apotheosis of the dance’.

Winchester Tourist Guides present a walk through Regency Winchester to mark the 200th anniversary of the visit of John Keats to the city in 1819, and of Jane Austen’s death here in 1817, with quotes from their works and letters read by 'Georgian' players along the way.

Discover the contrasting wit and wisdom of two of the greatest writers of their day as they give their opinions on life, education, religion, love – and Winchester!

Walks last approximately 90 minutes.

‘.. it is the pleasantest Town I ever was in, and has the most recommendations of any,’

– John Keats, letter 1819.

‘I give you joy of having left Winchester (College). Now you may own how miserable you were there,’

Here she looks back on her almost fifty-year career with Giles Kime, Hampshire resident and Interiors Editor of Country Life.

Paultons Park will be opening the park grounds on the evening of Tuesday 9th July 2019 exclusively for horticultural groups, individual garden enthusiasts and clubs to view our exquisite gardens. Our dedicated gardening team will be on-hand to provide some background on the gardens and answer any questions you may have.

The Paultons estate has a proud history with the original gardens being laid out by Capability Brown. Several of Brown’s iconic and recognisable design features can still be seen today. A brief history of the park can be found at the old tennis pavilion in John and Anne’s Garden as well on information boards that are located at points of interest around the grounds. We will also have leaflets available to give further detail on our gardens.

Haydn Quartet in D minor Op.76 No.2 ‘Fifths’
Fanny Mendelssohn String Quartet
Beethoven String Quartet in E minor Op.59 No.2 (Razumovksy No.2)

In a world full of fine ensembles, the Castalian Quartet has been noted as ‘the new force to be reckoned with’. This is reflected in demand from festivals worldwide, and in the numerous awards the ensemble has won. They bring their special talent to the delightful ambience of St Cross Church in a programme focused on the early decades of the string quartet genre. Haydn is considered as the creator of the form, influencing the next generation of composers, among them Fanny Mendelssohn, whose only quartet will be played, and Beethoven, who wrote the Razumovsky quartets for the Russian ambassador in Vienna.

The History of Modern Britain

Andrew Marr is one of the most familiar reporters, journalists, presenters and interviewers on television. He is the host of the weekly BBC1 programme The Andrew Marr Show as well as the presenter of BBC Radio 4’s Start the Week. Previously, he was Political Editor at BBC News.

Here, he takes a look at the history of Britain from the end of the Second World War to the turn of this century. He confronts the victory of shopping over politics, telling the story of how the great political visions of New Jerusalem or a second Elizabethan Age came to be defeated by a culture of consumerism, celebrity and self- gratification.

Inspired by the Sistine Chapel

Including Palestrina, Campkin, Morales, Josquin des Prés and Allegri’s Miserere

Over four decades of performance, Peter Phillips and The Tallis Scholars have done more than any other group to ensure that sacred vocal music of the Renaissance has not fallen out of the repertoire of concerts across the world. This fine programme draws on the richness of music at the Sistine Chapel, which was not solely a treasure trove of visual art. Allegri’s ‘Miserere’ was jealously guarded by Vatican powers, but there was much more than that heard within those famous walls. Palestrina set many versions of the Mass, some of which provide the framework of this concert, where the Italian Renaissance will come to the Gothic nave of Winchester Cathedral.

Erebus: The Story of a Ship

In September 2014 the wreck of a sailing vessel, HMS Erebus, was discovered at the bottom of the sea in the frozen wastes of the Canadian Arctic. Its whereabouts had been a mystery for 150 years. Now Michael Palin – former Monty Python stalwart, television globetrotter and bestselling author – brings this extraordinary ship back to life, following it from its launch in 1826 to the epic voyages of discovery that led to glory in the Antarctic and to ultimate catastrophe in the Arctic.

To: 11 Aug '19 06:30pm
Choice of three sailings 10am, 1pm & 3pm

The sight of the Cunard Fleet with their distinctive red and black funnels always causes a stir, especially on the rare occasions when all three ‘Queens’ are in port together. Join us on Shieldhall and sail close to Queen Elizabeth, Queen Victoria and Cunard’s flagship Queen Mary 2, when they are berthed in Southampton prior to their afternoon departure. As part of your cruise, see the impressive engine room with its original steam engines at work and the bridge, with its traditional instruments and gleaming brasswork; admire the ship’s steam assisted steering gear (similar to that used on Titanic); talk to the Captain and our volunteer crew; pass close to the great ocean liners and container ships; walk the teak decks; relax in the Saloon with our wide range of refreshments including tea / coffee; real ale; a range of Titanic bottled beers; wine and hot and cold food, available on all trips.
