Exbury Gardens & Steam Railway Now Open

Exbury Gardens and Steam Railway
From: 11 Mar '18 10:00am -
To: 04 Nov '18 04:00pm

A visitor once described Exbury Gardens as ‘Heaven with the gates open’. It is a garden for people young and old, horticulturalist or enthusiastic gardener, or just a lover of beautiful places.

Lionel de Rothschild was a keen collector of plants and he was also a highly successful hybridiser of many different species and Exbury is still filled with his creations. This tradition has been continued by his descendants, Edmund and Leopold and his grandsons, Nicholas and Lionel who actively continue to develop the gardens to this day.

Lionel had several strands in his hybridisation programme but it was generally

dominated by a desire to produce increased hardiness, better flowers and improved flowering.

In the years that Lionel devoted to Exbury, he was innumerable crosses of which he kept only the best. His stud book records 1210 hybrids that he considered successful. He further analysed these and decided that 452 were worthy of being individually named and registered with the Royal Horticultural Society.

Subsequent generations have continued to hybridise and Rothschild crosses continue to grace the show benches of the RHS.

‘A truly fantastic day out. My wife and I were bowled over by the amazing spring colours of rhododendrons and azaleas and there was literally colour everywhere. There are beautiful areas to walk through as well as places to sit. We took a picnic in the hope of being able to sit by one of the ponds and were not disappointed – the reflections were as spectacular as the real thing! The next thing we want to do is return in the autumn to see the colours change as it must be beautiful’

David Parker, Christchurch

We March On:Southampton Football Club, Then and Now

SeaCity Museum
From: 29 Mar '18 10:00am -
To: 28 Oct '18 05:00pm

What goes on behind the scenes in the build up to a match? How is the club leading research to help prevent player injury? Which Southampton player introduced football to Brazil in 1894? And which player had the worst haircut in the 1980s?
Discover these things and a great deal more in a major exhibition about the Saints which will explore the club’s rich history and how it operates today to meet the challenges of Premier League Football. The club runs one of the country’s leading football academies and a state-of-the-art training facility at Staplewood, in the New Forest. The academy has produced many players who have gone on to play international football and become shining stars on the world stage.
Southampton Football Club has a strong spirit of community, with a legion of loyal fans, and has been an integral part of the City’s life since its foundation more than 130 years ago. The exhibition will chart the highs and lows, and provide an insight into life at the club through the supporters, ex-players and backroom staff.

The Tropical Butterfly House

New Forest Wildlife Park
From: 01 May '18 10:00am -
To: 31 Oct '18 04:30pm

The Tropical Butterfly House is open to end of October 2018.

In the pupae emerging box you can watch the pupa wiggle and move until the pupa split open to allow the adult butterfly to emerge. It takes many hours for its wings to dry and be ready to release into the butterfly house.

The exotic adult butterflies are colourful as they enjoy the warmth of the Tropical Butterfly House.

You may be lucky and see some butterfly eggs and/or caterpillars on the the underside of the leaves (especially the banana leaves).

Can you find one of the many stick insects in the butterfly house?

As a centre we are aim is to help the community we serve in anyway possible. Management and retailers have recently undertaken an amazing awareness training session by a Dementia Friends Champion to help us understand some of the challenges faced by people who are living with dementia, autism or other sensory issues whilst shopping with us.

With this in mind we have introduced Sensory Sundays every last Sunday in each month.

These changes  we have introduced such as requesting the stores reduce the volume of their music and security/cleaning staff to be available to assist wherever possible. We really hope that this will help make a difference and be more inclusive. Very much like to involve our community as a focus group, to feedback any of the issues they find which makes shopping a challenge. If you would like to be involved in this please contact us for more information.

This will be every Sunday throughout the year!

Treasure boxes Fun activities for pre-schoolers

Royal Armouries Fort Nelson
From: 14 Sep '18 10:00am -
To: 30 Apr '19 05:00pm

Our range of treasure boxes have been developed with the needs of little learners in mind.

Each treasure box contains a selection of toys, stories and suggested activities designed to provide hands-on fun for inquisitive pre-schoolers (0-4 years). These boxes are designed to be used independently by parents/carers with their children.

There are 3 different treasure boxes to choose from:

Florence’s travelling trunk

This treasure box will help you explore the Fort’s hospital gallery. Find out what hospitals were like before Florence Nightingale made her reforms and how they changed afterwards. Play at being doctors and patients in our replica beds. This box contains medical themed books, toys and activities. Lots of fun for our next generation of doctors and nurses.

Scales and tales

The Art of Artillery gallery is home to the amazing dragon gun and the terrific tiger mortar. The scales and tales treasure box contains dragon and tiger themed books, soft toys and musical instruments to help you and your children bring history to life.

Sergeant Dobson’s kitchen

This treasure box will help you explore the Fort’s authentic garrison kitchen. Find out what the soldiers would have eaten in Victorian times, then have a go at making your own feast. This box contains food themed books, toys and activities – loads of clean cookery fun for budding chefs!

Price: Museum admission and use of the treasure boxes is free.

Availability and booking

The boxes are available every day. Simply request a treasure box at the visitor centre on arrival at the museum. A member of staff will provide you with a map, which will lead you to the relevant box, plus a code to open the lock.

Treasure boxes are issued on a first come, first served basis and are subject to availability. During busy periods there may be a time limit on usage.

AT LAST - THE ETTA JAMES STORY

Following its world premiere in Melbourne in 2013 At Last - The Etta James Story has since packed theatres throughout Australia and New Zealand. In 2016 the show returned to Melbourne for a sell-out season at The Arts Centre and July saw the show triumph for a third season at The Sydney Opera House.

Telling the story of soul legend Etta James’ turbulent life and features some of her most beloved songs including Tell Mama, Something’s Got A Hold On Me, Sugar On The Floor, the heart rending I’d Rather Go Blind, her iconic signature song At Last and more.

Vika puts her heart and soul into this unforgettable show and is joined on stage by some of Australia’s finest and funkiest musicians.

During a long and tumultuous career that saw her win six Grammy Awards and a star on The Hollywood Walk Of Fame, Etta James has influenced a vast array of artists from Diana Ross, Janis Joplin, Stevie Wonder, The Rolling Stones and Rod Stewart and is acknowledged as inspiring the careers of a new generation of singers from Christina Aguilera, Joss Stone, Adele and the late Amy Winehouse.

Sadly, Etta’s frantic recording and touring schedule coincided with her ever-growing addiction problems and over time she not only sang the blues…she lived the blues.

Mercifully, her passion for life and strength of character saw her conquer her demons and she continued to record and perform into her seventies.

With respect, this is her story.

Don’t miss re-living the soulful songs of Etta James, channelled through superstar Vika Bull and band.

September “Lights Up” Morning at the Mary Rose

28 Sep - 28 Sep 2018

10:00 - 12:00

History becomes a heartbeat closer

The lighting within the Mary Rose Museum is designed to create a stunning atmosphere and display, as well as helping protect the delicate collection of artefacts within the gallery showcases. Some visitors with a visual impairment or those with other medical and physical conditions can find our lighting levels to be a challenge in fully appreciating the museum.

As an initiative to engage further with all our visitors, the lights in the museum will be at a higher level on the mornings of the 4th Friday of the Month, from 10am to 12 noon. This will give a spectacular display of the ship. As always our wonderful team of volunteers and staff will be on hand to guide you through this experience.

At this higher lighting level, some visual displays may not be so effective, so guests wishing to enjoy the full immersive experience and displays would be advised to visit us after 12 noon on these specific days.

The enduring success of Incognito is one of the great stories of UK music during the last four decades. Look at the recent history of soulful UK artists and you will find any number of short-lived acts that have achieved pop success. Narrow it down to those that have created a uniquely British sound and have endured as a global phenomenon on their own terms, and the list becomes short. Dues, then, to Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick and Incognito, formed in 1979 and celebrating 36 years of positive vibes and undiluted Jazz-Funk in 2015.

Evening Event: £15.00

Local music, arts and dance at The Mary Rose

Life on board the Mary Rose was not all war and weaponry; music and merriment were an important part of long periods at sea. Come and join us as we continue this tradition with a day of performances, music and workshops!

Join us in collaboration with local artist James Mouland, who will be running a workshop to teach visitors how to create their own magnificent Ebru paintings, followed in the afternoon by two sessions with Rocksteady Music School, who will be teaching young visitors all about musical instruments and being a part of their own rock music composition! This will all be taking place alongside a variety of performances and acts that will be happening throughout the museum galleries.

Later on that day we invite you to our evening event, After Hours, where you can experience the museum at night beside bars provided by Southsea Brewing Company and live music provided by Mayfield Records. Immerse yourself in the museum galleries after hours whilst enjoying a drink and music from a range of amazing local artists.

Tickets for the evening event cost £15, and need to be booked in advance at the link below.

The Planets 2018

Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium
From: 30 Sep '18 06:30pm -
To: 30 Sep '18 09:00pm

Written out of a fascination with astrology, Holst’s The Planets was first performed 100 years ago. But what would it sound like if created today?

Inspired by modern astronomy and music, the adventurous Ligeti Quartet perform eight new planetary works, created especially for planetaria, by eight composers spanning contemporary classical, electronica to jazz. Exploring the domes’ unique design with live visuals, The Planets 2018 takes you on an astronomical journey into new music.

Music and science collide as composers Ayanna Witter Johnson, Deborah Pritchard, Laurence Crane, Mira Calix, Richard Bullen, Shiva Feshareki, Samuel Bordoli and Yazz Ahmed connect with astronomers to explore the modern science of our solar system. Taking inspiration from the latest explorations of Mars, Earth, Mercury, Saturn, Venus, Uranus, Jupiter and Neptune, sit back, look up and discover The Planets 2018.

A Live Music Sculpture event produced by Sound UK. Funded by Arts Council England National Lottery and RVW Trust.

There will also be a pre-concert talk by Professor Carl Murray who has been working with Yazz Ahmed on her five-minute piece inspired by Saturn.

Doors open at 6:30pm for a 7pm start. Drinks and light refreshments will be available from The Hub Café and licensed bar.

Inspired by the music of the revival, the "Golden Eagle" plays New Orleans jazz the way it was meant to be played, that is, with a powerful and melodic front line and a hard driving rhythm section. We have been described as "The band that has the New Orleans bounce", "An excellent dance band" and "A band that will reach the heights of popularity".

William Sweeney An Og-Mhadainn (The Young Morning)

Brahms Clarinet Quintet in B minor op 115
Grieg Death of Åse (from Peer Gynt)

Alan Hacker OBE (1938-2012), was a clarinettist and conductor with unusually wide-ranging enthusiasms. He would have been celebrating his 80th birthday on this day. Family, friends and colleagues have come together to offer this tribute to his life and work, through music that represents some of his significant repertoire.

The clarinettists in this concert all studied with Alan and were enormously influenced by his searching approach to performance. His partnership with The Fitzwilliam Quartet began in 1974 and lasted for over 15 years during which time they performed both the Mozart and Brahms quintets. Katy Hacker Hughes and Sophie Hacker, Alan’s daughters, are participating in this concert as a tribute to their father.

This is a fundraising concert for the charity Jessie’s Fund, whose activities include music therapy in children’s hospitals and hospices across the UK.

Winchester Cathedral
From: 02 Oct '18 07:00pm -
To: 02 Oct '18 09:00pm

This lecture will open up many of the issues about the relationship of science and faith, engaging with the works of Richard Dawkins and C.S. Lewis as issues are explored such as whether we can prove our core beliefs, and how religion and science interact and even enrich each other.

One of the most important topics to be dealt with in this lecture is the question of meaning. What is life all about? Professor Alister McGrath will argue that science may help us understand how our universe works. But we want answers to another and deeper question: what does it mean?

Professor Alister McGrath is Andreas Idreos Professor of Science and Religion at Oxford University. His writings explore a wide range of topics, at both the popular and scholarly levels, including intellectual history, the relation of science and Christian faith, and the basic themes of Christian theology.

The orchestra has played in most of the major concert houses in Europe, including the Musikhalle in Hamburg, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Queen Elizabeth Hall London, the National Concert House in Dublin, the Doelen in Rotterdam. It has toured the USA four times, recorded more than forty albums, the latest releases as CDs (available here) The Orchestra has provided music for films, such as the ‘Comedian Harmonists’ (Josef Vilsmaier,) and completed a soundtrack for ‘Just a Gigolo’ 1980 with David Bowie and Marlene Dietrich (her last film). It has appeared at Buckingham Palace (Christmas party 2010), and its soundtracks have been used in numerous advertising campaigns.

The Orchestra presents an unbeatable live concert at theatres across Europe presenting the songs of George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, and orchestrations from Duke Ellington, Ray Noble, Fletcher Henderson. The show also includes Songs that were sung by Fred Astaire, Bing Crosby and Al Bowlly, all served up with a liberal dash of ‘British humour’ as one critic put it

Policing Through The Ages

Westquay Shopping Centre and Dining Level
From: 06 Oct '18 10:00am -
To: 06 Oct '18 04:00pm

Policing Through The Ages is an event that showcases how policing has changed over time, with exhibits from all over the world, including vintage American cop cars and preserved UK police vehicles including cars and motorbikes from the 70s, 80s and 90s up until the present day. There’ll be a modern twist with Hampshire Constabulary’s new roads policing vehicles and communications vans with up-to-date telecoms technology, radios and automatic number plate recognition devices.

Head for the City Walls, where policing in the past and present will come alive throughout the day with voices from Hampshire Constabulary’s choir and performances from the Force’s band. There will also be the chance to find out what’s like to be a real life CSI and meet PC Bobby Panda out on patrol around the city, armed with stickers and goodies for those who want to get involved and find out more about how the look and feel of policing has changed over time.

There will also be a chance to meet Hampshire Constabulary’s Special Constables, The Speedwatch team and Hampshire Search and Rescue crews, plus many more to be confirmed.

The event is on the Esplanade, nestled between the historic backdrop of the Bargate and City Walls and the new tiers of modern bars and restaurants to set the tone for a time travelling experience.

JOHN MADDOCKS JAZZMEN

The John Maddocks Jazzmen Hail from Dorset and Hampshire, they reached their 40th birthday in 2011.
John had previously enjoyed success with The Black Bottom Stompers a band which he formed whilst in London and which still exists today.

The Jazzmen have their own sound brought about mainly by the unique style of John’s clarinet playing. John was originally inspired by the fine clarinettist Johnny Dodds, but John is his own man and encompasses influences from all over the traditional jazz spectrum. Personnel changes have been few over the years but one or two in the band can still claim to have been at least twenty five years younger when they first joined. The Band is well known for its drive and cohesiveness and the inclusion of some seldom heard tunes in the repertoire.

The Unreturning

Nuffield Southampton Theatres
From: 09 Oct '18 07:30pm -
To: 13 Oct '18 12:00am

Three young men are coming home from war. Their stories, set at different times over the last 100 years, are beautifully interwoven in this compelling new play.

Following Frantic Assembly's sell out show Things I Know To Be True, The Unreturning explores the profound effect that war has on young lives, and asks - what does coming home really mean? What is home? And when experience has shattered you into a million pieces, will home help to put you together again, or treat you as an ugly truth it does not want to confront?

An Evening of Mediumship with TV Psychic Tony Stockwell

The popular star of TV’s Street Psychic, Psychic Private Eyes and Psychic Academy, Tony Stockwell has a long established credibility as one of the top Intuitive Mediums and has shared the stage all round the world with international mediums such as Colin Fry, James van Praagh and Lisa Williams. Tony demonstrates his belief that those who have passed can communicate with their loved ones with detailed messages frequently including names, dates and locations and all delivered with emotion, sensitivity and empathy. The evening may include psychometry, photographs readings and psychic prediction

Recent legislative guidelines insist that any Evening of Mediumship should be billed ‘for entertainment purposes’. Tony certainly uses his natural wit, showmanship and Cockney charisma to entertain but more important, Mediumship has the potential to change someone’s life and instil in them a sense of peace, comfort and purpose. We hope that nobody can fail to come away untouched by the experienc

Doors Open 7pm

Alongside his busy schedule as a member of multi-platinum vocal harmony group G4, who embark on over 60 headline tour shows a year in the UK alone, singer and composer Mike Christie is back on the road, by popular demand, with an exclusive limited run solo tour in October.

Come and enjoy an evening of well-known classics in ranging styles from musical theatre, opera, pop, and self-penned songs from Mike's solo albums, including songs by Gershwin, Elton John, Bob Dylan, Flanders & Swann, Rodgers & Hammerstein and many more. Experience Mike's vocal versatility with his low tones reminiscent of Paul Robeson alongside iconic songs at the piano such as Your Song.

Bass-baritone Mike Christie shot to fame as a member of multi-platinum selling vocal harmony group G4, who were Runners Up on the very first series of ITV's The X Factor. An alumnus of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, Mike has performed in musicals in the West End, pantomime across the UK and numerous operatic roles, and has recently finished his second summer season at Opera Holland Park in London. He has also written an opera called The Miller's Wife, which premiered in London in 2013. Catch Mike while you can, as this promises to be an evening not to be missed!

Real Ale Train

Mid Hants Railway 'Watercress Line'
From: 13 Oct '18 07:00pm -
To: 13 Oct '18 11:30pm

Our famous Real Ale Train, or RAT as it is affectionately known, continues its tradition of serving real ale from a restored bar carriage pulled by a steam locomotive. We select up to 2 local breweries from Hampshire and the surrounding counties for each train, including Bowmans, Itchen Valley, Triple fff, Fallen Acorn, Red Cat and more!

  • Pub Busting Prices
  • Train fares for 2018 are only £16 per person and just £2 per pint!
  • FREE Pint voucher when booking more than 3 days in advance.
  • Enjoy two round trips from Alton to Alresford (approx. 3 hours)
  • NEW! Once you have selected a date and purchased your RAT tickets, for an extra £55 why not reserve a compartment?
  • Compartments can hold up to 8 people and would be exclusively yours for the evening. Limited availability so first come, first served. Available to book online.
  • Why Not Fill Your Glass?
  • Purchase an exclusive RAT pint glass as a perfect memento of your great night out - these glasses are only available to purchase on the RAT at £6 per pint glass.
  • Full Bar
  • It's not just about ale - we also sell wine, cider, spirits, mixers and soft drinks.
  • Hot Food

There is a selection of hot food available on board the RAT, take a look at our food menu here. We politely ask that, with the exception of celebration cakes, only food and drink purchased onboard may be consumed on the RAT.

Booking Information

Due to the popularity of our RAT's, these trains are advance booking only.

The RAT departs ALTON station 7.20pm, returning to Alton approx 10.30pm (connects with the 10:44pm South Western Railways departure from Alton, plus one further service after that).

Unfortunately our RAT does not have the capacity to hold wheelchairs, but you are welcome to leave these at the station. Ramps are available for use and staff can help visitors board the train when needed. If you have any questions regarding accessibility on the RAT please call us on 01962 733810.

To drink alcohol on our RAT you must be 18+ years

Please note that Credit and Debit Cards cannot be used on the Real Ale Trains. Cash only.

Cancellations: We regret that there can be no refund for ‘no show’ customers. Cancellations notified in writing, at least four weeks before the booked date will be refunded less a £10 admin fee; shorter notice cancellations are not entitled to a refund but the company will try to re-sell the tickets. If a purchaser is found then the cost, less an administration charge of £10, will be refunded.

For more than 10 tickets the quantity can be changed in your shopping basket.

The company does not guarantee that the trains will arrive or depart at the times stated and reserves the right to cancel, alter or suspend any train without notice, or to substitute a different train should this be necessary, for whatever reason

JOHN SHILLITO JAZZ BAND

The Select Six is an exciting and accomplished band with a wide repertoire, a strong ensemble sound and exciting soloists. Our programmes strike all the right chords in many moods; from the poignant melancholy of the blues to the joy of a good-time vaudeville song; from the mellow emotions of a romantic ballad to the abandoned ebullience of a street right of of New Orleans and the rollicking rhythms of boogie-woogie. With a front line that includes Bobby Fox and John Wurr you can expect an enthralling performance and plenty of high spirits. I get a real thrill from leading this band because everyone makes my job so easy! Each musician gives so much! I've been leading bands now for 60 years, and, believe me, this is the very best! Come along and see and hear for yourself!

Space Lectures - Our Solar System, Compared to Exoplanets

Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium
From: 17 Oct '18 04:00pm -
To: 17 Oct '18 08:00pm

Dr Amaury Triaud (University of Birmingham)
Abstract: We will look at recent discoveries in exoplanets - planets orbiting other stars than the Sun. Exoplanets have surprised researchers by how different they appear to the eight planets we know so well. But are we really distinct, or just one system amongst a multitude? We will explore the properties of our planets, and those of others Suns, comparing them to one another.

From this comparison we will see how many similarities exist, and also, how many differences. Those provide us with a chance to investigate how nature produces planets.

The Lecturer: A regular visitor to observatories in the Atacama Desert, Amaury Triaud is the discoverer of over one hundred exoplanets.

He obtained his PhD at the Observatoire de Genève in Switzerland, then moved across the globe to do postdocs at MIT, Cambridge, US and the University of Toronto, Canada before becoming a Kavli Institute fellow at the other Cambridge here in the UK.

His observations focus on planetary systems that are different compared to our own, either by the type of planets that compose those systems, by their architectures, or because of the type of star(s) they orbit. As part of the SPECULOOS collaboration, he now searches for planets the same size and the same temperature as the Earth and aims to find out if life emerged elsewhere in the Universe. The first such examples were found in the TRAPPIST-1 system.

Active in outreach, he created an exoplanet exhibit at the University of Toronto at Scarborough in 2015, has been scientific consultant for a sci-fi trilogy entitled Quantika and has engaged in public lectures, debates, scientific cafés, observing nights, visits of the observatory, classroom interventions, multidisciplinary seminars, exhibits. Besides all his scientific endeavours, he enjoys fencing, photography, tango, (g)astronomy and anything creative that comes his way.

Monthly adult evening lectures, each followed by a short planetarium show.
These Wednesday lectures are aimed at a level a little above most popular science lectures, so come prepared to exercise your brain and learn the science behind the headlines. The speakers are chosen from the best academic speakers in the UK, with a talent for explaining difficult concepts and the knowledge to give the very latest news from the research community.

Although the primary audience is adults, older children are also welcome to attend.

Lectures run on the second Wednesday of the month unless detailed otherwise.

SAMMY RIMINGTON with CUFF BILLET

Of all the “honorary” New Orleans citizens who happen to come from England,Sammy Rimington is perhaps the most lyrically musical. A graceful and highlycreative master of New Orleans jazz, he came to prominence with Ken Colyer´s Jazzmen around 1960 and worked regularly with them thereafter, as well as with like-minded musicians countrywide in Britain, Europe and America. In 1965 he moved to the USA, worked with “Red” Allen, Zutty Singleton, Herman Autrey and others, and soon after moved to New Orleans, where he replaced Butch Thompson in the Hall Brother´s Band, recorded with Kid Thomas (George Lewis shared the session) and regularly collaborated with visitors like Don Ewell and Max Morath. After returning to Europe he worked with Barry Martyn, formed his jazz-rock band Armada, and worked around Britain and Europe with, among others, George Webb (1973), Martyn´s Legendes of Jazz (1974), Duke Burell (1974-5) and Chris Barber (1977-79). By 1995 he had played and recorded with every American and European New Orleans -style jazzman of note, an like a small number of other great British reedmen (eg Tubby Hayes and Pete King) his name had become a promise of quality and flair. “It´s very difficult to express my feelings for this kind of music,” says Rimington, “but I know after years of playing and experience that it´s one of the most difficult forms of music to play well, due to it´s simplicity and relaxed rhythmic feel. I prefer the music to be free but, controlled ... also not to be restricted and tied down to sounding like a particular band on record.”
