Southampton City Art Gallery
From: 02 Dec '17 09:00am -
To: 07 Apr '18 05:00pm

Recording the Region 2017 will conclude in December with the exhibition Common Ground featuring work by Southampton based photographer David Baker.
Focusing on Southampton Common, this exhibition is the culmination of four years spent documenting the space in the early hours of the morning. During the day this large communal area is used by hundreds of people and is home to a wide range of events. By choosing to show it devoid of human inhabitants and transformed by time and weather, Baker hopes to motivate others to look again at the Common and engage with it in a new and personal way.

Roger Mayne and St. Ives: A Defining Moment

Southampton City Art Gallery
From: 13 Jan '18 10:00am -
To: 12 May '18 05:00pm

This groundbreaking exhibition shows very early work by world-renowned photographer Roger Mayne, and previously unseen images of St. Ives alongside portraits of the artists from the 1950s. Curated by the artist’s daughter, Katkin Tremayne, the exhibition also explores how Roger Mayne’s photography changed as a result of his encounter with the St. Ives group of artists and the lifelong friendships he made. St Ives paintings from the Collection are hung side by side with large scale Roger Mayne works from the 1960s to allow a dialogue between the two, showing him questioning early on the distinction between painting and photography.

Sensory Sundays

The Marlands Shopping Centre
From: 21 Jan '18 10:00am -
To: 27 Jan '19 04:30pm

As a centre we always aim to help the community we serve in any way possible. Centre Management and many of our retailers have recently undergone an amazing awareness training session by a dementia friends champion to help us understand some of the challenges faced by people who are living with dementia, autism or other sensory issues whilst shopping. With this in mind the centre will be introducing Sensory Sundays which will be held on the last Sunday in each month. We hope to introduce some small changes such as requesting the stores to reduce the volume of their music in store and security and cleaning staff that have undergone the training will be available to assist wherever possible. We really hope that this day will help and we hope to involve some of our community as a focus group to feedback any of the issues they find which make shopping a challenge. If you would like to be involved in this please contact us for more information.

This will be every Sunday throughout the year!

BEN VOLPIERRE-PIERROT

Ben Volpierre-Pierrot was the lead singer of Curiosity Killed The Cat, a band that had a number of Top 40 Singles in the UK together with a No. 1 Album, KEEP YOUR DISTANCE.

The band played soulful, jazzy and funky pop music and was initially signed to Phonogram Records’ Mercury imprint.

They first came to the notice of the UK Music Press when they worked with Andy Warhol for the video of their 1985 single “Misfit”. This featured the band in New York and at one point featured Ben dancing down a side street whilst Andy Warhol referenced Bob Dylan’s 1965 long-form promotional file for “Subterranean Homesick Blues” by dropping pieces of which card in time to the music (The Dylan film clip and its concepts have since been popularly imitated by a number of other artists, including INXS in their video for “Mediate” in 1988.)

The band’s 2nd Album, GETAHEAD, this album was released in 1989, led by the single “Name and Number” (UK No. 14) and it’s “Hey How You Doin” refrain would find itself in the Top Ten two years later as part of the De La Soul song “Ring Ring Ring (Ha ha Hey)”. The album peaked at No. 29 in the UK Charts.

In 1992, the band returned to the UK Top 3 with a cover of Jonny Bristol’s “Hang on in There Baby”. However, the album “BACK TO FRONT” was only released in Japan and selected overseas markets.

After 1992, the band split up and only reformed for an appearance on the National Lottery midweek show on BBC1 in 2001.

Since then Ben has toured under the name “Curiosity Killed the Cat”, on a number of 1980s revivals.

Ben was best known for wearing a beret in most pictures of the band. He later revealed it was in fact a peaked fisherman’s hat, turned round with the peak to the rear so that it resembled a beret.

Ben VP (as he was billed on a number of solo singles in the mid 1990s) was frequently referred to as Ben Vol-au-Vent-Parrot in Smash Hits Magazine. He also appeared as a model on the front cover of Mike Read’s Pop Quiz board game.

The albums released by the band and their UK Chart Positions are:-

Curiosity Killed The Cat

· 1987 - Keep Your Distances (UK No. 1)

· 1989 - Getahead (UK No. 29)

Curiosity
· 1992 - Back to Fr

MADISON HEIGHTS & RU 40

Madison Heights was formed in 2000 in by musicians who love to get people up on the dance floor having a good time and a great night out! We have seen too many wedding bands going through the motions or taking themselves too seriously. We arrive on the stage and from the first track until the last we put 100% energy and passion into our live performance.

Inspired by the stage shows of the classic suited and booted Motown showbands, we deliver sharp and slick performances of classic songs by the legends of soul, including Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, James Brown, Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner.

1878: The War That Never Was

Royal Armouries Fort Nelson
From: 02 Feb '18 05:30pm -
To: 03 Feb '18 08:30pm

Friday 2 & Saturday 3 February

A time-travelling promenade performance through our atmospheric Victorian fortress.

The story so far…

Buoyed by its victory against Prussia in 1871, the French superpower is set on adding Great Britain to its empire. French troops have landed and are marching on Portsmouth. The home of the British navy must be defended at all costs.

Fort Nelson’s underground garrison is waiting nervously for news of the French invasion; fending off the first exploratory attacks, and discovering that not everyone within the walls of the Victorian fort are as trustworthy as they seem…

Time travellers are advised that this is a guided promenade performance through the underground tunnels and chambers of the Fort. The ground is often uneven and it gets cold down there, so please wear suitable footwear and clothing. There will be live gun-firings during the performance; ear-protectors will be available. This event is suitable for ages 14+. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Performances at 5.30pm, 6pm, 6.30pm, 7.30pm, 8pm & 8.30pm

Capacity for each performance is limited to 30.

Tickets: £15.75

Tickets must be booked in advance: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/1878-the-war-that-never-was-tickets-41418144786

Ticket information

£15.75 per person.  Performances at 5.30pm, 6pm, 6.30pm, 7.30pm, 8pm & 8.30pm

Duration: 60 minutes

This truly unique West End show is hosted by Sarah Jayne who has been performing as Dolly Parton for over 25 years and is Europe’s Leading Tribute to the Queen of Country - Dolly Parton. Sarah Jayne and Award Winning Vocal Impersonator Andy Crust take us on a journey back through time meeting some of the most influential icons who shaped Country music history. The show features Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Billie Jo Spears, Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson, Tammy Wynette, Garth Brooks, John Denver and new for 2017 Glen Campbell. The show also includes The Tennessee Allstar Band.

Each artist not only looks and sounds like the Country Star they portray, these professional performers transform themselves through hours of practice at their craft. Every detail is taken into consideration from script, choice of songs, hair, make-up and mannerisms, as well as professional costumes and props. Kenny Rogers himself named and stated on his website that Sarah Jayne and Andy Crust's Tribute To Kenny and Dolly is Europe's Leading Tribute Act. Open Exhibition: The Four Seasons

Southampton City Art Gallery
From: 03 Feb '18 10:00am -
To: 21 Apr '18 05:00pm

This exhibition features artwork by residents of Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Wiltshire and Dorset submitted as part of this year’s Open Exhibition.
We have invited artists to take inspiration from the changing nature of the seasons: from beautiful Autumnal colours to re-birth and growth in Spring; from Winter frost and snow to Summer flowers and shimmering heat. The turning of the seasons has historically served as a means for artists to explore deeper issues around the cycle of life, the rhythms of nature and the relentless march of time.
Accompanying this exhibition will be a small display of artwork from Southampton City Art Gallery’s permanent collection which explores a range of artists’ approaches to the four seasons.
Monday to Friday: 10am-3pm, Saturdays: 10am – 5pm, Sundays: Closed, Bank Holiday Mondays: 10am-3pm

2018 marks 50 years since the end of steam on British Rail and to commemorate that historic occasion we are pleased to welcome as a guest locomotive 'Black 5' No. 45231,a former resident of ours. This is entirely appropriate as 'Black 5s' were by far the most numerous steam class in the last years of steam and a pair of them headed the famous last BR steam train, the 15 guinea special, from Carlisle to Manchester on 11 August 1968.

We’re bringing back the breath-taking digital projections on to the city walls but with a brand new look, starting at 6pm each day and running throughout the evening.

Take a walk though the Esplanade and see the amazing light installations including Bloom, a thousand spheres of light that change colour in audiovisual symphony. There’ll also be ‘Heofon’, a maze based on triangular geometry and changing colours.

Hands on half term

Beaulieu
From: 10 Feb '18 10:00am -
To: 18 Feb '18 05:00pm

Inspired by the National Motor Museum's dazzling new display, The Luxury of Motoring, we're inviting all our visitors to enjoy a taste of the finer things in life this half-term.

Discover what life was like for those at the top, then take a peek 'below stairs' to see how their chauffeurs, maids and cooks lived. Pick up your Hands-On Half-Term Pass Book and collect a stamp from each of the activity stations.

There’s loads of hands-on activities to get involved in: Take inspiration from the glittering display of Lalique car mascots in The Luxury of Motoring to create your own mascot design.

Drape yourself in luxurious fabric and strike a pose as the iconic pose of the Rolls-Royce Spirit of Ecstasy. Rumour has it that one of the earliest top hats nearly caused a riot when it was first worn in public, create a stir by making your very own top hat to take home, and get your hands on an array of motoring artefacts. Chat to Mr Stephens about life as a chauffeur to the aristocracy and if you're lucky you might even be able to spot him driving around the grounds in his historic vehicle!

Get hands-on in Palace House's Victorian Kitchen as Lord Montagu's Cook or her Kitchen Maid prepare traditional dishes.

Visit the monk in Beaulieu Abbey to pick up some medieval building tips and learn how to make an arch. Try on a monk's habit to see how it compares to the luxurious motoring fabrics.

The Marine Salvage Project Monthly Conservation talks

Royal Armouries Fort Nelson
From: 11 Feb '18 12:00pm -
To: 11 Feb '18 12:30pm

On the second Sunday of each month, visitors are invited to join our Conservator Matthew Hancock behind-the-scenes for a free 30 minute talk, as he discusses one of the major conservation projects currently being carried out at Fort Nelson, The Marine Salvage Project. The 17th century project focuses on three guns recovered from the sea, including two from the wreck of the HMS London, all of which require technical conservation treatments. The gun recovered from Goodwin Sands is especially interesting as it is manufactured from four different metals.

GRAHAM ROBSON CHATS TO DAVID RICHARDS, CBE

Beaulieu
From: 10 Mar '18 07:30pm -
To: 10 Mar '18 10:00pm

Motorsport historian, Graham Robson interviews our guest this evening, David Richards. David is the Chairman of Prodrive, Chairman elect of the MSA and former Chairman of Aston Martin.

David Richards spent eight years as a professional rally driver becoming British and Scandinavian champion and concluded his competition career by winning the World Rally Championship as co-driver to Ari Vatanen in 1981.

David then devoted his time to developing his business interests, which led to the formation of his own motor racing team and the creation of Prodrive, now a world leading motorsport and advanced technology business.

Since 1984, Prodrive has won six FIA World Rally titles with Subaru; four British Touring Car championships; five class wins at Le Mans; and are reigning FIA World Endurance Champions.

Today, Prodrive runs Aston Martin Racing in the FIA World Endurance Championship but also has a growing reputation for the development of advanced engineering solutions.

In 2007, David led the consortium that purchased Aston Martin from Ford, and was appointed Chairman, a role he fulfilled for six years.

He is Chairman elect of the Motor Sports Association, a role he assumes in January 2018. He sits on the advisory board of Cranfield School of Management, is a trustee of the British Racing Drivers’ Club Benevolent Fund and Vice President of the motor industry charity BEN.

In the 2005 Queen’s New Year’s honours he was made a CBE for his services to motorsport. In 2017 he was inducted into the Motor Sport Hall of Fame and presented with the Spirit of Le Mans award by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO). INFORMATION & TIMINGS
The evening will commence at 7.30 pm in the Lecture Theatre of the National Motor Museum’s Collections Centre and finish at around 10.00 pm. The National Motor Museum will be open from 6.00pm for a private viewing at no extra charge. A pay bar will be available in the Collections Centre for the purchase of beers, wines and soft drinks.

Exbury Gardens & Steam Railway Now Open

Exbury Gardens and Steam Railway
From: 11 Mar '18 10:00am -
To: 04 Nov '18 04:00pm

A visitor once described Exbury Gardens as ‘Heaven with the gates open’. It is a garden for people young and old, horticulturalist or enthusiastic gardener, or just a lover of beautiful places.

Lionel de Rothschild was a keen collector of plants and he was also a highly successful hybridiser of many different species and Exbury is still filled with his creations. This tradition has been continued by his descendants, Edmund and Leopold and his grandsons, Nicholas and Lionel who actively continue to develop the gardens to this day.

Lionel had several strands in his hybridisation programme but it was generally

dominated by a desire to produce increased hardiness, better flowers and improved flowering.

In the years that Lionel devoted to Exbury, he was innumerable crosses of which he kept only the best. His stud book records 1210 hybrids that he considered successful. He further analysed these and decided that 452 were worthy of being individually named and registered with the Royal Horticultural Society.

Subsequent generations have continued to hybridise and Rothschild crosses continue to grace the show benches of the RHS.

‘A truly fantastic day out. My wife and I were bowled over by the amazing spring colours of rhododendrons and azaleas and there was literally colour everywhere. There are beautiful areas to walk through as well as places to sit. We took a picnic in the hope of being able to sit by one of the ponds and were not disappointed – the reflections were as spectacular as the real thing! The next thing we want to do is return in the autumn to see the colours change as it must be beautiful’

David Parker, Christchurch

We March On:Southampton Football Club, Then and Now

SeaCity Museum
From: 29 Mar '18 10:00am -
To: 28 Oct '18 05:00pm

What goes on behind the scenes in the build up to a match? How is the club leading research to help prevent player injury? Which Southampton player introduced football to Brazil in 1894? And which player had the worst haircut in the 1980s?
Discover these things and a great deal more in a major exhibition about the Saints which will explore the club’s rich history and how it operates today to meet the challenges of Premier League Football. The club runs one of the country’s leading football academies and a state-of-the-art training facility at Staplewood, in the New Forest. The academy has produced many players who have gone on to play international football and become shining stars on the world stage.
Southampton Football Club has a strong spirit of community, with a legion of loyal fans, and has been an integral part of the City’s life since its foundation more than 130 years ago. The exhibition will chart the highs and lows, and provide an insight into life at the club through the supporters, ex-players and backroom staff.

EASTER HOLIDAYS

Beaulieu
From: 30 Mar '18 10:00am -
To: 15 Apr '18 05:00pm

We had so much fun becoming nature detectives during the Easter holidays in 2017! Read on to find out what we got up to, and stay tuned for details of our 2018 activities.

BE THE FIRST TO HEAR ABOUT OUR 2018 ACTIVITIES
Sign up to our mailing list below, or follow us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram for all the latest news and events.

During Easter 2017 we got our magnifying glasses out to explore the natural world at Beaulieu...

MR. NATURE DETECTIVE
Mr Nature Detective could be seen driving around the Beaulieu grounds in his Willys Jeep.

PLANT YOUR OWN CRESS
Visitors could chat to the Victorian gardener and have a go at planting their own cress.

NATURE TREASURE HUNT
Visitors could collect their own special Nature Detective trail bag to gather wildlife treasure on the Mill Pond Walk. Did you collect all the items?

GIANT GRIFFIN CARVING
We invited visitors to ride the Monorail for the best view of our tree-top griffin, carved from an oak tree.

FREE FACE PAINTING
We went incognito! We had great fun with our free nature-themed face painting.

WATERY WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHS
We invited our visitors to get creative and snap a photo through our outdoor picture frame. Head to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and search for #BeaulieuEaster to see what they took!

FLOWER FAIRIES
If you tiptoed quietly down the Mill Pond Walk you might have been able to spot the homes of the flower fairies.

PLUS... WE HAD EVEN MORE ACTIVITIES OVER THE EASTER WEEKEND
Visitors who came over the Easter weekend could take part in even more fun activities!

desktop-event-gallery-easter-bunny-(w870px_h475px)
WHITE RABBIT
We loved having the larger-than-life White Rabbit.

CHOCOLATE TREAT
We hope you enjoyed your chocolate treat from Palace House - we know we did!

VEHICLES IN ACTION
Amazing historic vehicles could be seen motoring around the grounds.

Please note: Timings and content may vary. We reserve the right to amend the programme without warning as circumstances dictate.

Nina Hamnet Queen of Bohemia – One Woman Show

Southampton City Art Gallery
From: 31 Mar '18 02:00pm -
To: 31 Mar '18 02:30pm

To coincide with International Women’s Day, NINA, Queen of Bohemia, brings theatre to the Gallery in this exciting show by actor and playwright Vanessa Rosenthal. Who was Nina? How old was she when she painted the Gallery’s wonderful portrait of Horace Brodsky? Where was she when she numbered Sickert, Pissaro, Epstein, Picasso and Modigliani among her friends and lovers? Once fêted but then overlooked, Nina, from her favourite watering hole in the Fitzrovia Tavern, tells all in her own raunchy way. Running time: 40 minutes.

Southampton Castle: A Ceremony in Stone

Tudor House and Garden
From: 08 Apr '18 09:00am -
To: 01 Jul '18 05:00pm

Southampton Castle has been a feature of the landscape of the town since the 11th century.
The original wooden motte and bailey castle was rebuilt in stone and extended several times.

It was visited by kings and raided by pirates. It fell into disuse in the 15th century, as the defence of the town refocused on the walls, and was gradually encroached on by the townsfolk. This exhibition will explore the history of the castle, through archaeology, documentary evidence and the stone structures which survive today. It will also examine prehistoric and Saxon evidence from the castle area, and feature its Gothic re-invention in the age of Jane Austen.
