From: 28 Jul '18 10:00am -
To: 29 Jan '20 04:30pm

As a centre we are aim is to help the community we serve in anyway possible. Management and retailers have recently undertaken an amazing awareness training session by a Dementia Friends Champion to help us understand some of the challenges faced by people who are living with dementia, autism or other sensory issues whilst shopping with us.

With this in mind we have introduced Sensory Sundays every last Sunday in each month.

These changes  we have introduced such as requesting the stores reduce the volume of their music and security/cleaning staff to be available to assist wherever possible. We really hope that this will help make a difference and be more inclusive. Very much like to involve our community as a focus group, to feedback any of the issues they find which makes shopping a challenge. If you would like to be involved in this please contact us for more information.

This will be every Sunday throughout the year!

Leonardo da Vinci: A Life in Drawing

Southampton City Art Gallery
From: 01 Feb '19 10:00am -
To: 06 May '19 03:00pm

This year sees the five hundredth anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci, one of the greatest artists and scientists the world has known. To mark this anniversary, Royal Collection Trust has collaborated with twelve museums and galleries to stage simultaneous exhibitions of Leonardo’s drawings across the United Kingdom, in an initiative designed to give the widest-ever UK audience the opportunity to see the work of this extraordinary artist.

Leonardo was perhaps unique in the range of his achievements, and drawing lay at the heart of his creativity. He drew to prepare his artistic projects, to record the world around him, to pursue his scientific speculations, and to make visible the workings of his imagination.

This display will feature twelve drawings which reflect the full range of Leonardo’s practice including anatomy, botany, engineering, and cartography.

This exhibition will be accompanied by a series of special events including talks, tours and art workshops. Visit southamptoncityartgallery.com to see the full events program.

Greg Gilbert

Southampton City Art Gallery
From: 01 Feb '19 10:00am -
To: 06 May '19 03:00pm

Following on from Greg Gilbert’s solo exhibition, Through Sand, in 2015 this display shows the evolution of the artists’ work from miniature, photorealistic biro studies drawn from photographs to equally intricate but surreal imaginings.

In 2016 Gilbert was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer which triggered this major shift in his practice. This exhibition will feature a body of work, Convalescence, which was created in a great outpouring both in hospital and at home. Although all of the images arrived very naturally, they put the artist back in touch with primary influences of interwar artist such as Stanley Spencer, Paul Nash and David Jones, who processed their traumatic experiences through surreal narratives. Also on display will be a selection of the artists’ poetry, a selection of which has been chosen by Carol Ann Duffy to be one of her Laureates’ Choice publications. These poems further explore his illness but in a less abstract way creating a full, sensory diary of his experience.

To accompany this presentation of his own works Gilbert will be selecting several drawings from Southampton’s permanent collection, featuring artists who have informed and resonate with his own practice.

Esther Teichmann and Monster Chetwynd: Phantasie Fotostudio II

16 February 2019 - 23 May 2019

Phantasie Fotostudio II is the most recent work made as part of the ongoing collaboration between artists Esther Teichmann and Monster Chetwynd. Since having first met at the Royal College of Art during their MA studies in 2004, the pair have been struck by the parallels in reference materials that their very distinct practices draw upon. Their practices also overlap in their adoption of tableaux vivantes and their use of theatrical backdrops and sets. Thus begun a dialogue and close friendship that has taken the form of making a joint body of work once a decade.

Their previous collaboration 'Phantasie Fotostudio, The Esthacus Teichwynd Photos' (fusing Spartacus Chetwynd and Esther Teichmann), was made and shown in Berlin in 2007. Utilising photography and collage, these works playfully draw on diverse references, from Walter Benjamin’s essay Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction, Man Ray and Lee Miller’s solarisations, to Brigitte Bardot as Roger Vadim’s muse, Brooke Shields in Blue Lagoon (1980, dir. Randal Kleiser), Satyricon, David Lynch, and Walkabout (1971, dir. Nicholas Roeg). The subjects within these works recall imagined icons, at once beautiful and grotesque, a Frankenstein of moments in modern cinema and culture, each work unique and distinctly archival in quality, as though found on the kind of cutting-room floor you might encounter in a dream. All the protagonists are part of the artists’ circle of friends, artists, curators, musicians in their own right, with the inclusion of family.

Phantasie Fotostudio II brings many of the same protagonists together again along with new collaborators in this Warholesque film montage of extended portraits. Punctuated by the repetition of a crying figure, the film becomes a narrative of gazes, dramatized further by the original string quartet score by Benji Jeffrey, artist, musician and composer, who is also one of the protagonists within the film. Directed by Esther Teichmann, all the subjects selected costumes from Monster Chetwynd’s extraordinary wardrobe, under her careful guidance, with contributions by artist and make-up enthusiast Paul Kindersley. This most recent collaboration features not only a new generation of artist protagonists alongside Teichmann’s and Chetwynd’s peers, but also their own children, both in front of and behind the camera.

Esther Teichmann

Esther Teichmann (b.1980, Karlsruhe, Germany) is a London based artist working with the photographic across still and moving image installations. Her practice looks at the relationships between loss, desire and the imaginary, slipping between autobiography and fiction. Recent solo museum shows include Heavy the Sea, Transformer Station, Cleveland and Mondschwimmen, Reiss-Engelhorn Museum, Mannheim. In collaboration with artist Christopher Stewart she curated and edited the exhibition and book Staging Disorder (2015) that included work by An-My Lê, Sarah Pickering, Richard Mosse and Broomberg & Chanarin. Teichmann received an MA (2005) and PhD (2011) in Fine Art from the Royal College of Art (RCA) and is Head of Programme of Master of Research, and Coordinator for Critical and Historical Studies at the RCA. Esther is currently working on a monograph of visual works and essays, On Sleeping and Drowning, forthcoming by Stanley/ Barker.

Monster Chetwynd

Monster Chetwynd (b. 1973, London, UK) lives in Glasgow, UK. Chetwynd’s practice intertwines performance, sculpture, painting, installation and video. Her work incorporates elements of folk plays, street spectacles, popular culture and Surrealist cinema. Her performances and videos often employ troupes of performers – friends and relatives of the artist – and feature handmade costumes and props. She has performed and exhibited internationally, and was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 2012. Solo exhibitions and performances include those at Foundation Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Torino, Italy (2018); Sadie Coles HQ London (2018); CCA Glasgow (2016); Bergen Assembly, Bergen Kunsthall, Norway (2016); Bonner Kunstverein, Bonn, Germany (2016); Arts Council Collection Commission (2016); Nottingham Contemporary (2014); Studio Voltaire, London (2014); Massimo de Carlo, Milan, Italy (2014); Sadie Coles HQ, London (2014); and the New Museum, New York (2011–12). She has been involved in numerous group exhibitions, most recently: Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck, Remagen, Germany (2016); Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zürich, Switzerland (2016); Liverpool Biennial (2016); Glasgow International (2016); Edinburgh ArtFestival (2015); the Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art, Sweden (2013); and ‘Performance Now: The First Decade of the New Century’, various venues, USA (2012–14).

Benji Jeffrey

Benji Jeffrey (b. 1988, Halifax) is a London based artist, musician and composer, working primarily in moving image and live performance to create works that interrogate and play with notions of theatricality, performativity, identity and authenticity, friendship, enthusiasm and joy. Music and collaboration are central to Jeffrey’s practice, which includes curatorial projects and drag. Benji received an MA from the Royal College of Art in Moving Image in 2017 and a BA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art in 2011.

More than Stories is a trilogy of films inspired by Anya Lewin’s family photographs and stories, and their interconnections with screen history and public archives. Each film has at its heart the haunted memories of Jewish life embedded in a particular story passed down to Lewin by her father.

'Fez: The Royal Scent' (2019) has been made specifically for this exhibition and will be presented alongside 'With Heartfelt Gratitude for the Painless Treatment' (2008) and 'Chez Paulette on the Sunset Strip' (2013). 'Fez: The Royal Scent' completes Lewin’s trilogy of installations that will be shown here together for the first time.

These films take place in three different cities that Lewin’s family inhabited during their wanderings: Cairo, Berlin, and Los Angeles. Each of the films was shot within built sets that recreate the locations central to each story: a perfume shop, a dental office, a coffee house. Aspects of these sets reach out from the films and appear in the gallery space so that the audience becomes part of an expanded frame.

'Fez: The Royal Scent' takes place from 1926 to 1928, when Lewin’s father was a child, and his father and mother decided to leave Berlin for Cairo, Egypt, which had a large Jewish immigrant community. The film is shot in four languages: Arabic, French, Polish and English, acknowledging the multi-lingual environment the family would have found themselves in. Once settled in Cairo the family opened a perfume shop and Lewin’s grandmother – who had a degree in chemistry – invented a scent called Fez that was presented in a bottle in the shape of the common Fez hat. The bottles were stacked in the shop window when one day King Fuad I happened to drive past, stopped the royal car and bought all the stock. Fez became the Royal Perfume and the family stayed in Cairo for two years.

'With Heartfelt Gratitude for the Painless Treatment' blends the historical with the imaginative. Developed from an inherited and unexplained collection of autographed photographs of 1920s film and theatre stars who frequented the Berlin dental practice of Lewin’s grandfather, Dr Ignatz Lewin, the story tells of a Jewish Polish family, who fled to the USA in 1938, soon after Krystallnacht and before Hitler invaded Poland. The film travels through the Weiner Library archive to discover the original Berlin address of the dentist surgery to reveal a film within a film of the fascinating patients, with a nod to silent German Cinema.

'Chez Paulette on the Sunset Strip' brings together the launch of the European style coffee house in Los Angeles, the experience of Jewish immigration to Hollywood, the influence of Europe on Hollywood, and the blurring of fact, fiction, the real and the reconstructed.

In 1958 Max Lewin took over his family’s failing cake shop. Capitalising on its hip location on Los Angeles’ Sunset Strip, he turned it into a coffee house called Chez Paulette. With the help of Marlon Brando, who became a regular customer to help build its reputation, Chez Paulette became a popular Hollywood bohemian hangout favoured by actors, poets, folk singers and flamenco guitarists and dancers. At the same time as Chez Paulette emerged, along came 77 Sunset Strip (also 1958–64) one of the first detective television series. 77 Sunset Strip and Chez Paulette were brought together when a set of the café was built on the Studio lot, and featured in the series with Max Lewin as host.

These tales and tidbits, TV scenes, facts and momentary glimpses from photos in a scrapbook have been reworked, copied, quoted, and reconfigured into a film script and made into a film that is both finished and unfinished at the same time. As the director/detective figure in the film says, “there is no mystery, just history”.

To accompany the exhibition Gordian Projects is publishing Anya Lewin's photo-text book, More Than Stories. The book examines the archive materials — photographs, newspaper clippings and other ephemera — from the research processes that culminated in her film trilogy.

The production of Fez: The Royal Scent has been made possible through support from Arts Council England. Production and audio-visual exhibition services have been provided by Spike Film and Video at Spike Island.

Stefan Gec: The Shepherd's Whistle

16 February 2019 - 27 April 2019

The Shepherd’s Whistle centres around the artist’s fascination with top-secret maps of strategic cities worldwide that were created by Soviet intelligence during the Cold War, alongside an M-72 Soviet army motorbike and sidecar from 1957. These two highly symbolic elements are brought together to create a complex project that explores the socio-political environment of the Cold War era, whilst also touching on current issues of identity, migration and immigration.

Riding the M-72 motorbike and navigating using the Soviet maps, Gec has made a number of journeys to five UK towns and cities that were identified by the Soviets as having strategic importance. The starting point for all of these journeys has been Gec’s hometown of Huddersfield in West Yorkshire.

Following the end of the Second World War, there were around 250 displaced Ukrainians, including Stefan Gec’s father, in the Huddersfield area. An important development for that community was the formation of the Huddersfield branch of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain, whose headquarters opened in 1956. Starting from Huddersfield, Gec rode the M-72 motorbike to and around Derry-Londonderry, Blyth, Greenock, Barrow-in-Furness and Southampton. Throughout the project Gec has worked with the artist/filmmaker Lee Hassall, to document the journeys using 8mm film shot on Soviet cine cameras of the same era.

For The Shepherd’s Whistle, Gec presents a number of newly-made works, including text and sculpture, shown alongside the film footage made in each location, examples of the Soviet maps and his M-72 motorbike.

During the Cold War, the Soviet military undertook a top-secret enterprise: to create comprehensive surveillance maps of the British Isles. These detailed the widths of roads, heights of bridges, depths of rivers and names of streets. They also revealed the exact location and purpose of every building of strategic importance. Printed exclusively in Cyrillic script, the maps were translated phonetically so that a Russian speaker on the ground could easily pronounce place names. The maps being exhibited in Southampton have an additional significance, as the city is home to the Ordnance Survey Headquarters, and is the final destination for Gec’s UK journeys.

The M-72 Soviet motorbike and sidecar that Gec uses is presented along with its original registration paperwork. Manufactured in Kiev, Ukraine, for the Soviet army, the motorbike is a direct, unauthorised copy of Germany’s pre-war BMW model R71. Gec has painstakingly dismantled, cleaned and rebuilt the engine and body, whilst preserving its original ‘found’ appearance.

The Shepherd’s Whistle builds on Gec’s previous works and thematic concerns, however, for the first time Gec will actively engage as a performer - the journey serves as a reflection on his artistic practice. The chosen locations retrace previous projects that explored similar themes: 'Trace Elements' (1990), 'Detached Bell Tower' (1995-96) and Buoy (1996-present). Alongside the physical experience of revisiting these places, the films help mark the legacy of this research activity in each location.

The Shepherd’s Whistle has been commissioned by John Hansard Gallery in partnership with Locus+, and is supported by Arts Council England.

“Inspired by our Cathedral” is an exhibition of work produced by the GCSE students of Kings’ School.

The students have spent the past two terms creating work for an exhibition of Art inspired by Winchester Cathedral. They visited the Cathedral over the summer and throughout the Autumn term to gather photographs and sketches to inspire them in their work. They had tours with the guides and learned about its history, its architecture, its spiritual ethos and all that it contains.

The students have explored a rich and varied range of media, techniques and processes in their aim to create a thought-provoking exhibition that will challenge the audience and engage them with their surroundings. The work includes Art, Photography, Textiles, Sculpture and Mixed Media, based on a brief that incorporates the themes of “Hidden Figures”, “Colour”, Pattern and Texture”, “Architecture” and “Illumination”.

JOHN ILLSLEY

Along with Mark Knopfler, John was a founder member of the legendary band who, during their time together, sold over 120 million albums.

The evening will feature classics from the Dire Straits history and include a Q & A with a/v led by Paul Cummins [ex-Dire Straits management}. Paul will be asking questions, during which John will reveal the story and development of the band from its humble beginnings in a council flat in South London, where songs like Sultans of Swing and Wild West End were created, on their journey to playing all over the world to millions of fans, making albums in London, New York, Montserrat and Nassau; performing and and working with some of the world’s most influential and creative musicians and producers.

“Having Mark Knopfler as songwriter, singer and guitar player in the band gave Dire Straits it’s unique character. It was a pleasure for me to be able to contribute to the distinctive sound of the band, and enjoy the friendship and musical journey that Mark and I shared.”
John will also be joined on stage with fellow musicians from John’s band who will play music from the whole DS catalogue including, Money for Nothing, Brothers in Arms, Romeo and Juliet and Sultans of Swing.

It promises to be a special, intimate evening looking into the life and times of one of the biggest rock & roll bands of all time.

The Eagle Jazz Band

The Eagle Jazz Band founded in 1951 delighted audiences worldwide for an amazing fifty-four years, one of the oldest formed bands in the UK.

The Band sports a healthy combination of youth and experience, Pete Brown (trumpet cornet and valve trombone) and Brian Lawrence (Bass and Sousaphone) were both long serving members of the original Eagle Jazz Band after initially forging their musical partnership in the Potteries based Mardi Gras Society Band during the 1970s. Matt Palmer (clarinet & saxes) joined in 2004, having worked extensively with Pete at Alton Towers theme park in Staffordshire. Drummer Julyan “baby jools” Aldridge ( drums trombone) has returned to the fold and added vigour to the engine room to allow the band to fire on all cylinders when required, along with Brian Mellor (banjo and guitar) and Terry Williams (trombone drums vibes). The collective experience amassed by the current line-up includes top UK theme parks, river cruises cruise liners, major UK and European Jazz Festivals and Radio and Television broadcasts. The wide repertoire is drawn from popular songs from the 1920s, 30s, and 40s; Classic Jazz compositions by King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton Sydney Bechet and Duke Ellington plus New Orleans Marches, Rags, Stomps, Blues, Swing and instrumental features. All band members are multi-instrumentalists, enabling us to play a variety of different sounds and styles each played in a happy, entertaining manner, many featuring vocals.

The death of Christ is central to the Christian faith, and is the major focus of our Good Friday celebrations. So what does it mean? And how does it illuminate the Christian life? This lecture explores the various ways in which Christians have understood the meaning of the crucifixion, and what each of these brings to our understanding of Christ and ourselves.

HAMPSHIRE and ISLE OF WIGHT AIR AMBULANCE

Ordinary People. Extraordinary Care. Supported by You.
Through your support, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance brings an advanced Critical Care Team to sick and injured people in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight when they need it most.

Available both day and night, 365 days a year, the Air Ambulance Critical Care Team is called out many times a day to attend to road traffic collisions, sporting accidents, collapses and many other incidents. Highly skilled crews of doctors, paramedics and pilots can be at the scene of an incident within minutes, ready to deliver the same level of care that you would expect from a hospital emergency department.

It currently costs £15,000 a day to maintain our life saving service, and it is only thanks to the generosity of the communities that we serve that we are able keep the Air Ambulance flying and saving lives.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance began operations on 1st July 2007 and our helicopter is based at Thruxton Aerodrome, near Andover. Our Charity office is at 22 Oriana Way, Southampton, SO16 OYU.

A brand new history of jazz with a fantastic selection of music and more hilarious, musically brilliant, historically fascinating moments!
"The musical equivalent of the Reduced Shakespeare Company, in which none of the major musical soliloquies gets left out." Alyn Shipton (BBC Radio 3's Jazz Library, The Times)
The Jazz Repertory Company presents the follow up to the highly successful 100 Years of Jazz in 99 Minutes. Once again going back to the beginning of jazz and coming right up to date, playing all the music we couldn't fit in the first time around.
We start off in 1902 with High Society and wind our way to the present day with many fascinating features along the way to illustrate how jazz changed. We show you how the rhythm section gradually evolved its style from the 1920s through to be-bop in just one number.

We perform I’m In The Mood For Love à la sexy Julie London, the scintillating Charlie Parker and then the scatting King Pleasure and we give you a tour de force performance of St Louis Blues that takes in every style of jazz in an extraordinary arrangement featuring Bessie Smith, Louis Armstrong, Glenn Miller, Cannonball Adderley, Kenny Ball, Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock!
The multi-instrumentalist sextet swaps instruments around with indecent haste and the band members take it in turns to fill in the short gaps with fascinating tittle tattle about the music and musicians who made the music magnificent. It’s hugely entertaining and not to be missed.

Performed by:?

?Pete Long: saxophones, flute, trumpet

Enrico Tomasso: trumpet, trombone, vocals

Nick Dawson: piano, clarinet, vocals

Dave Chamberlain: bass, guitars, banjo, piano, drums

Richard Pite: drums, sousaphone, double bass

Georgina Jackson: vocals, trumpet

Fort Talk March: The Big Gun Arms Race - A Victorian Technological Revolution

Royal Armouries Fort Nelson
From: 27 Mar '19 07:30pm -
To: 27 Mar '19 09:00pm

The Royal Armouries museum at Fort Nelson presents the third in a series of special after-hours Fort Talks on Wednesday 27 March with guest speaker Nicholas Hall, Curator Emeritus of Artillery.

Nicholas Hall, formerly keeper of Artillery at the museum, played a key role in helping the Royal Armouries and Hampshire County Council to develop Fort Nelson from a derelict site to a must see attraction, ranked amongst Portsmouth’s top five attractions on TripAdvisor.

During the evening, Nicholas will reveal how during the mid-19th century gun designers began to transform what was possible by using new materials and technologies developed from the Industrial Revolution. The talk will examine allegations of government favouritism and how patent infringements flew thick and fast between rival engineers such as Armstrong, Blakely and Whitworth. As a consequence Britain fell behind German and French achievements.

Using the remarkable artillery collection of the Royal Armouries at Fort Nelson, Nicholas will make connections between major technological advances in artillery to illustrate the murky stories of the past.

After 2018s highly successful mini tour , Geoff enjoyed it so much that he is going back on the road in March 2019.

Talking about his West Ham and England career and his life in general, he has some great stories too tell. All told with humour and humility, this is the only man in Footballs long and illustrious history to have scored a hat trick in a World Cup Final. He tells the inside story of this greatest ever achievement and it’s funny as well as exciting.

Compere is his friend and agent Terry Baker and in the second half the audience get to ask questions an some of the answers will be a surprise to many.

It’s a great night for all football fans

Seann Walsh: After This One, I'm Going Home

Friday 29th March 7:30pm at NST City

Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee and the self-dubbed “Lie-In King”, Seann Walsh is “unquestionably the best observational comic of his generation" (The Guardian).

Returning from his run in America, where he made his USA television debut appearance on Conan, Seann Walsh is back on tour in the UK.

This dishevelled, fiery, animated, fiercely idle, millennial man child is one of best live comedians to have come out of the UK.

Seann made his acting debut starring in Comedy Central’s sitcom Big Bad World. This was quickly followed up by the lead role in Monks (BBC One). He also utilised his physical comedic abilities in Sky’s silent comedy, Three Kinds of Stupid, which led to him producing, writing and starring in his own silent comedy web-series The Drunk. He also wrote and starred in his own Sky short for Sky Arts and is now co-starring in Jack Dee’s brand-new sitcom Bad Move (ITV one). He recently made his feature film debut as the children’s nemesis in family film, 2:hrs. Seann is quickly on his way to becoming one of the UK’s best comedy character actors.

Team captain on Virtually Famous (Channel 4) and a regular on Play To The Whistle (ITV). Other TV appearances include: One For The Road (BBC 3), Live At The Apollo (BBC 2), The Jonathan Ross Show (ITV), Tonight at The London Palladium (ITV), Celebrity Juice (ITV2), 8 Out Of 10 Cats (Channel 4), 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown (Channel 4), Alan Carr’s Chatty Man (Channel 4) and Russell Howards Stand Up Central (Comedy Central).

Seann can currently be heard hosting his weekly radio show News-Ish on Fubar Radio.

His debut DVD, Seann to be Wild, was recorded at Hammersmith Apollo and received critical acclaim when it was released in 2013 by Universal Pictures.

  • ‘A cracking good show’

The Telegraph

  • ‘One of comedy’s hottest properties...very talented, very funny’

London Evening Standard

  • 'He remains one of the most entertaining observational comics on the block'

The Independent

Doug Hill will once again give an informative insight into more of the Museum's most iconic vehicles and no doubt treat you to a 'start up' or two.

Priority will be given to ‘Friends’ when booking. These evenings will be held exclusively in the Museum.

INFORMATION & TIMINGS

The evening will commence at 7:30 pm in the National Motor Museum and finish at around 10:00 pm. A pay bar will be available for the purchase of beers, wines and soft drinks.

TICKETS

For further information and to purchase tickets please contact Theresa Browning on 01590 614792 or email theresa.browning@beaulieu.co.uk. Please indicate your preferred date at the time of booking.

U2UK

U2UK have won the hearts of U2 fans all over by performing in Europe and beyond, including U2's after show party at the Heineken Stadium for two consecutive nights on the Dutch leg of the Vertigo Tour.

Over their sixteen year history, they have played to audiences all over the world, from Jersey, Beirut, Romania, Portugal, Spain, Malta, Azores, Ireland, Cyprus, Sweden, Holland, Belgium and of course all over the UK, and to crowds from as intimate as one hundred to over ten thousand; it’s easy to see why U2UK are Europe’s Premiere U2 Tribute Show

Performing songs spanning four decades of some of the greatest rock anthems ever written, U2UK recreates the most captivating moments of the tours which have earned U2 their reputation as ‘The World’s Greatest Rock Band’.

We have a hard earned reputation for giving an explosive live performance and the positive feedback we get from the audience members we chat to after the shows, really makes us feel proud of what we have acheived

In addition to the tours, the theatre shows, private and corporate events and the festivals both in the UK and abroad, U2UK have appeared two years running at the Ahoy stadium in Rotterdam a stadium that U2 themselves have played on several occasions. They also appeared alongside U2 in a double-page feature in the internationally renowned 'Q' magazine.

High profile gigs for U2UK include European stadium shows, huge summer festivals in the UK and abroad, a tour of the UK’s finest racecourse venues including Bath, Lingfield, Newark, Sandown and Royal Windsor, and corporate events for clients such as Noel Fitzpatrick, Channel 4’s world renowned Bionic Vet, the Isle of man TT races, Carling, Heineken, Ducati, ING Bank and Egg Finance... and to top it all played in front of a volcano on Pico Island in the Azores!

SUSSEX JAZZ KINGS

Dave Stradwick, the well-known player of hot, traditional, jazz trumpet, leads the band. Early in 2000, Dave and Lesley Stradwick moved from their London home to Sussex for a “quieter life!” Dave had been the leader of Vintage Jazz for many years and also played with other busy bands. A decision was made to leave Vintage and so cut down on the workload to give time to renovating the Sussex house. It soon became obvious, that people missed his humour fronting a band, and he decided to form a new band, The ‘Sussex Jazz Kings’. It started with a ‘low key approach’, but natured the ‘fun element’ for which Vintage had been renown. Inevitably this, combined with the fine musical ability of the chosen musicians, resulted in the band becoming more and more popular around the M25 area and beyond. Dave now concentrates on leading his own band again. The band has been resident band in a club at Box Hill near Dorking, Surrey’ they regularly play to a crowded club and take the opportunity to introduce new numbers, judging their reaction before inflicting them on unsuspecting audiences elsewhere. In many peoples opinion, the band is now a fine exponent of happy traditional jazz, in the broad New Orleans style. The ‘jazzers’ come back every week, so the band must be doing something right. The band now plays at all major jazz festivals and tours the country to perform at most great jazz clubs, in the last few years they have had many bookings across Europe and beyond.

Remains of the Day

Tuesday 2nd April - Saturday 6th April at NST Campus

1930s England. Darlington Hall runs like clockwork under one of the last truly great butlers. Reserved and dutiful like his father before him and with the funny and forthright housekeeper Kenton by his side, Stevens faithfully serves his employer. Meanwhile, England stands on a precipice, as fascism builds and boils in Europe.

20 years later, Stevens travels to find an old friend, remembering choices made and not made, journeying to one last chance at happiness. 2017 Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel, which became a beloved Merchant Ivory film, is a story for anyone who has ever been afraid to follow their heart.

Now transformed into an exquisite stage play by one of Britain's most exciting writers (Barney Norris), it receives its world premiere at Royal & Derngate before embarking on a major national tour.

Thursday 4th April NST City

Running time: Approx 2hrs 10mins (incl. interval)

David Gower, the legendary former England cricket Captain is taking guard before running between venues on a UK theatre tour.

Often described as one of the most stylish left-handed batsmen of all time, the blond-haired 80s bombshell promises to share his thoughts on 2019’s Cricket World Cup and The Ashes, both of which are being battled out on UK soil in 2019. This is your chance to hear from the Sky Sports Cricket lead anchor before anyone else in 2019, a year that has every potential to be a one of the most memorable for the history of the game.

Expect tales from captaining his national team to victory in the Ashes as well as memories flying that Tiger Moth over Queensland.

Bonnets Galore Easter Holidays

Beaulieu
From: 06 Apr '19 10:00am -
To: 22 Apr '19 05:00pm

Rev up your Easter holidays! See the sights, sounds and smells of motoring history come to life as vehicles roar into action in the Beaulieu grounds, then try on bonnets of a different kind in Palace House...

See motors in action! See a selection of the vehicles in the cavalcade as it parades across the Events Arena each afternoon, then head inside the museum to take a peek beneath the open bonnets of even more remarkable machines and talk to museum guides about the vehicles’ incredible stories.

For bonnets of a different kind, visit Palace House where you will find Easter bonnets and Victorian costumes to try on for a selfie opportunity. Roll up your sleeves in the Victorian Kitchen and help Lord Montagu’s cook roll out Easter biscuits, talk to costumed guides about life in the 19th century and join in with Easter craft activities. Younger visitors can also have their face painted with Easter designs!

Fill in our new travel log to create memories from your visit and complete the fun activities, fascinating questions and drawings, then collect stamps at each part of the attraction.

EASTER WEEKEND (18 - 22 APRIL)

Visit us over the Easter weekend to see the larger-than-life Easter bunny hopping through the grounds!

All Easter activities are included in the general admission ticket to Beaulieu, which includes entry to the National Motor Museum with its Chitty Chitty Bang Bang 50 years exhibition, World of Top Gear, On Screen Cars, Palace House, Beaulieu Abbey with its Abbot’s Mews falconry exhibition and the spring-time grounds and gardens.

HARRY ALLEN BAND

Harry Allen: sax; Andrea Pozza: piano; Simon Woolf: bass; Anthony Pinciotta: drums

“Superb”, “inventive”, “breathtaking”, “lyrical” are just some of the adjectives used by critics to describe the unsurpassable talent of Harry Allen. Acclaimed worldwide as a master interpreter of the great American songbook, he is one of the key American mainstream voices on tenor-saxophone and we’ve nabbed him on a rare visit to the UK. He’ll be joined by the fine Italian pianist Andrea Pozza. Not to be missed.

Washington-born and New York-based tenor saxophonist Harry Allen carries forward the legacy of the great swing tenor sax soloists. Allen has received numerous awards, published over 30 albums in his name and collaborated with a myriad of great artists, among which are Tony Bennett, Hank Jones, Scott Hamilton, Terry Gibbs, Warren Vache , Ray Brown, to name just a few.

He has become known both for his versatility and his masterful command of the swing idiom. Harry performs on this UK tour with acclaimed Italian pianist Andrea Pozza (Chet Baker, Steve Grossman, Scott Hamilton, Enrico Rava). Eclectic pianist Andrea Pozza is able to easily handle any repertoire and Harry Allen is able to move with agility between different styles, from traditional jazz to bebop. Both are sublime performers of great jazz.

‘the most gifted new-generation swing tenorist to emerge since Scott Hamilton’…Digby Fairweather

Dig Burley

Can you help reveal the buried secrets of Burley?

Dig Burley is a community archaeology festival taking place in and around Burley during Easter 2019. It is a joint project between the Burley Local History Society, Burley Parish Council and the New Forest National Park.

Dig Burley will take place from Thursday 11 to Sunday 14 April 2019 and will feature talks, workshops and exhibitions. We are also seeking local residents and families who would be happy to open a small archaeological test pit on their property.

So if you live in Burley why not register now to join the fun? If you’re not a Burley resident don’t panic as there will be plenty of opportunities to visit and get involved in the project. We will also be looking for willing communities for future years!

We will keep you updated with developments as we build towards Dig Burley in Easter 2019 and you can join the conversation on social media with #digburley

On the second Sunday of selected months, visitors are invited to join our Conservator Matthew Hancock behind-the-scenes for a free 30 minute talk, as he discusses one of the major conservation projects currently being carried out at Fort Nelson, The Marine Salvage Project. The 17th century project focuses on three guns recovered from the sea, including two from the wreck of the HMS London, all of which require technical conservation treatments. The gun recovered from Goodwin Sands is especially interesting as it is manufactured from four different metals.

JOHN MADDOCKS JAZZMEN

The John Maddocks Jazzmen Hail from Dorset and Hampshire, they reached their 40th birthday in 2011.
John had previously enjoyed success with The Black Bottom Stompers a band which he formed whilst in London and which still exists today.

The Jazzmen have their own sound brought about mainly by the unique style of John’s clarinet playing. John was originally inspired by the fine clarinettist Johnny Dodds, but John is his own man and encompasses influences from all over the traditional jazz spectrum. Personnel changes have been few over the years but one or two in the band can still claim to have been at least twenty five years younger when they first joined. The Band is well known for its drive and cohesiveness and the inclusion of some seldom heard tunes in the repertoire.
