KINGS & SCRIBES: THE BIRTH OF A NATION

Winchester Cathedral
From: 01 Oct '19 09:00am -
To: 31 Jan '25 05:00pm
THIS EXHIBITION IS CURRENTLY CLOSED.

Be one of the first to explore Kings and Scribes: The Birth of a Nation, a stunning new exhibition at Winchester Cathedral.
Winchester Cathedral is a living monument to the heritage of England and is one of the most historically significant buildings in Britain. From the time of Alfred the Great until after the Norman Conquest, Winchester was England’s capital and the Cathedral was its royal chapel. Much of England’s early history was based here and twelve English kings are believed to be buried here – meaning that Winchester can lay claim to being the first Royal Mausoleum. The opening of Kings and Scribes: The Birth of a Nation marks the culmination of an ambitious seven-year project to unlock the Cathedral’s stories and treasures by inspiring active engagement in the interpretation and exploration of our heritage.

Thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and other generous supporters, a spectacular three-level exhibition space in the South Transept will take visitors on a journey through over 1,000 years of history, whilst offering awe-inspiring views of the Cathedral.

There are four exciting galleries to explore:

A SCRIBE’S TALE
The Winchester Bible is the largest and finest of all surviving 12th-century English bibles. Hear the incredible story of how and why the Winchester Bible was made, in the Cathedral where it was created, and admire its exquisite illuminated initials and elaborate decorative schemes.

THE BIRTH OF A NATION
Winchester played a unique role in shaping early English history and Old Minster, the Anglo-Saxon Cathedral, lay at the centre of its foundation. Join us on an intriguing journey of discovery as we unearth the secrets hidden within the Cathedral’s mortuary chests, meet influential Anglo-Saxon kings in the city from which they ruled and discover the role of Winchester’s Anglo-Saxon and Norman Cathedrals in the birth of a nation.

DECODING THE STONES
Unlock the mysteries of Winchester Cathedral, a building which has been created, destroyed and remade over centuries of struggle and Civil War. Decoding the Stones will tell the story of the Cathedral itself, linking modern restoration works and contemporary craftspeople with their medieval predecessors.

THE MEZZANINE
Explore the realities of monastic life at Winchester Cathedral Priory with a fascinating rolling programme of displays from the Cathedral archives. The Mezzanine also provides access to the remarkable 17th-century Morley Library and its outstanding collection of books, which have remained in their current location for over 400 years.

We have some trunk-tastic news.

The world famous Elephant Parade® is landing at Westquay

May 22 – June 20.

Elephant Parade® is the world’s largest art exhibition of decorated elephant statues. Created by artists and celebrities, each Elephant Parade® statue is a unique art piece. The life-size, baby Asian elephants have been exhibited in international cities and help raise awareness for the need of elephant conservation.

Trek to Westquay this spring for the perfect family day out and discover our beautiful elephant statues. The question is, are you up to the ‘tusk’?

Locate all 25 elephants throughout Westquay and The Esplanade and learn fun facts about these lovable creatures.

We don’t want to blow our own trumpet but they are amazing and we would hate for you to miss any, so here are some clues to help you find some of the herd:

You’ll find some elephants roaming on Upper Terrace, overlooking The Esplanade

A cheeky elephant relaxing outside Bill’s

A large herd roaming The Esplanade

Find some loveable friends in Westquay south near Five Guys

Three elephants can be found exploring Westquay North, near Carluccio’s

Make sure you share elephant selfies using #WQelephantparade and tag @Westquay and you could win a top bundle of prizes, including a family meal at The Real Greek.

An ideal gift for Father’s Day – a cruise on Steamship Shieldhall! Head down Southampton Water to the Solent, and enjoy the excellent Shieldhall Stompers Jazz band! On our return to our berth, we will steam by the departing Anthem of the Seas, Iona and Queen Victoria – always the chance to sound our whistle and play the ‘Shieldhall Organ’!

As part of your cruise, see the impressive engine room with its original steam engines at work and the bridge, with its traditional instruments and gleaming brasswork; admire the ship’s steam-assisted steering gear (similar to that used on Titanic); talk to the Captain and our volunteer crew; pass close to the great ocean liners and container ships; walk the teak decks; relax in the Saloon with our wide range of refreshments including tea/coffee; real ale; a range of Titanic bottled beers; wine and hot and cold food, available on all trips.

Whilst Steamship Shieldhall has had to cancel her 2020 sailing programme due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are pleased to be in a position to release dates for 2021 sailings. In keeping Shieldhall COVID compliant – and working towards the industry ‘Good to Go’ marque during our closed season – we will initially be offering a limited number of tickets for each of our 2021 sailings. There is an expectation that we will be able to resume selling to Shieldhall’s capacity (currently 220 persons) at some point in the future, though this will be based on Government advice. Once the reduced capacity levels are reached, enquirers will be directed to a waiting list, and contacted when and if circumstances change. If a cruise does not go ahead, all ticket holders will be offered a full refund or the opportunity to transfer their tickets to another sailing.

When Vikings pillaged their way across Wessex in the ninth, tenth and eleventh centuries Southampton wasn't spared. The history books detail numerous encounters, battles and massacres and the archaeology from this time paints a picture of great upheaval. And yet, no Viking discoveries have ever been made in Southampton, so where were they? In this brand new talk, join historian Andy Skinner in travelling back to the Dark Ages to spend some time in the company of heroic kings and warriors to discover more about Southampton in this fascinating age.

Please help support us by choosing how much you are happy to pay for this session. While all ticket buyers will receive the same level of service, your generosity would be a great help in making sure these events are affordable for all.

Clear instructions and details for how to log in to this talk will be emailed on purchase. Tickets are required for each device being used to access the event. Tickets are non-refundable, unless the event is cancelled by the organiser.

Spend a leisurely day on the Solent, enjoying the spectacle of the Round the Island Yacht Race from the great viewing platform of the Shieldhall! The race regularly attracts over 1,700 boats and around 16,000 sailors, making it one of the largest yacht races in the world and the fourth largest participation sporting event in the UK after the London Marathon and the Great North and South Runs.

Portrait Drawing with Brian Reynolds

Southampton City Art Gallery
From: 03 Jul '21 10:30am -
To: 03 Jul '21 01:30pm

We are absolutely delighted to be able to host these drawing sessions, led by Brian Reynolds, in the gallery once again!

For these three hour sessions (10:30am - 1:30pm) our model will be in the same pose throughout so that those who wish to undertake a sustained piece of work across two weeks will be able to do so. At the same time, the gallery space is such that participants who prefer shorter poses will have the opportunity to shift viewpoints as they wish.

Although these are programmed as portrait sessions, but you can also concentrate on full- or half-length drawings of the clothed figure, working in pencil, charcoal or pastels. Huge opportunities then, for lots of creative work in the gallery!

Participants of all levels of experience, including beginners, are welcome and Brian will provide individual tuition throughout the session as required.

We will supply the basics, but please do feel free to bring any drawing materials you would particularly like to use.

Cruise to the Nab Tower – Shieldhall’s 65th birthday revisited!

Shieldhall was 65 years young in 2020, but had to postpone her birthday celebrations! Now join the Shieldhall crew and help celebrate Shieldhall’s 66th birthday in style as we journey out to the Eastern Solent and the near-mythical Nab Tower! We’ll be recreating the journey Shieldhall carried out for Southern Water during the mid-1980s, when she visited the nearby ‘dumping grounds’. On our return to berth enjoy witnessing the spectacle of cruise ships Braemar, Britannia, Celebrity Silhouette and Iona departing the port of Southampton – always the chance to sound our whistle and play the ‘Shieldhall Organ’!

As part of your cruise, see the impressive engine room with its original steam engines at work and the bridge, with its traditional instruments and gleaming brasswork; admire the ship’s steam-assisted steering gear (similar to that used on Titanic); talk to the Captain and our volunteer crew; listen to the informed commentary on the sights and sounds of Southampton Water and The Solent; pass close to the great ocean liners and container ships; walk the teak decks; relax in the Saloon with our wide range of refreshments including tea/coffee; real ale; a range of Titanic bottled beers; wine and hot and cold food, available on all trips.

Online Talk: Building Spitfires Without A Factory

SeaCity Museum
From: 28 Sep '21 07:00pm -
To: 28 Sep '21 08:00pm

Eighty one years ago, with the Battle of Britain being fought out over the summer skies of southern England, the Luftwaffe began targeting the aircraft factories, including the Supermarine Spitfire factory in Woolston. A plan to move production of RJ Mitchell’s iconic fighter from the Woolston and Itchen Works had already been begun some months before but now a complete dispersal was ordered.

This talk by Alan Matlock will explore the human story of those attacks from the point of view of those in the buildings or watching from across the town at the time and will also investigate some of the secret sites used to manufacture Spitfires in Southampton and beyond.

Please help support us by choosing how much you are happy to pay for this session. While all ticket buyers will receive the same level of service, your generosity would be a great help in making sure these events are affordable for all.

Over the century since the sinking of the RMS Titanic many conflicting theories have emerged that argue that it was not an iceberg that sank the Titanic, but something altogether different: a submarine, a fire or even that the wreck isn't the Titanic at all! Join SeaCity's resident historian Andy Skinner to cut through the theories and uncover the facts of this matter in this illuminating, enlightening and interesting foray into the world of Titanic conspiracy theories.

Westquay Quiet Hour

Westquay Shopping Centre
From: 06 Nov '21 09:00am -
To: 30 Jun '22 10:00am

Did you know Westquay runs a regular weekly quiet hour? The centre and its retailers work together to create a quieter than normal shopping environment. The hour allows visitors young and old that find large public spaces, noise and crowds of people difficult to deal with.

We hope this offer builds on the great work that’s been achieved over the last year with a range of our community partners to continuously work towards Westquay being an accessible environment throughout the year.

Westquay's quiet hour takes place every Monday 9am - 10am.
