SeaCity Museum
From: 14 Jan '17 12:00am -
To: 04 Jun '17 12:00am

25 March 2016 – 4 June 2017

In their golden age from the 1920s to the 1950s, ocean liners were the lifeblood of Southampton, bringing employment, industry and glamour to the city.

From the early days in the 1890s to modern day cruiseliners, this major exhibition tells the story of these great ships and evokes the romance of sea travel and life on board. The exhibition includes a wide range of rarely seen items from the city’s Maritime Museum Collection, including ship models, posters, photographs and ephemera from the great liners such as menu cards and souvenirs.

See furniture and other items from some of the famous ships that called Southampton home such as the Mauretania, Queen Mary and QE2, and learn about the people who travelled and worked the oceans aboard these iconic ships through letters, diaries and oral history interviews with passengers and crew.

Visitors of all ages can have a go at activities such as deck quoits, try on a captain’s or steward’s uniform, or find out what was served for meals in First Class on the Queen Mary.

Open 7 days a week, 10am - 5pm

Southampton Castle: A Ceremony in Stone

Tudor House and Garden
From: 20 Apr '17 11:00am -
To: 01 Sep '17 05:00pm

First constructed in the late 11th century soon after the Norman Conquest, Southampton Castle played a major part in the history of southern England from the wars between the Empress Matilda and Stephen; to the French invasions during the time of Henry I, Edward III and Richard II. By the 14th century, with over 2km of town walls Southampton stood alongside other key fortifications such as the castles of Windsor, Oxford and the Tower of London.
As well as tracing the history of the castle through its various phases of construction and neglect this exhibition will capture the day to day existence of living in such a building and reveal what life was like for the Romanesque, medieval and Georgian castle dweller, through pottery, clothing and even the bones left behind.

One flower girl. Two experts. Free lessons. Six months. Duchess required.

Over one hundred years after it was written, a radical new co-production explores one of the most celebrated comedies of the 20th Century, Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion.

‘The science of speech. That’s my profession. I can place any man within six miles. I can place him within two miles in London. Sometimes within two streets.’

Witness the transformation of Eliza Doolittle in a world where we can be digitally altered within seconds.

Through video and sound technology, director Sam Pritchard’s fearless new staging interrogates class identity and social mobility in Britain today and asks us - how much do our voices still define who we are?

Caroline Hall: Hampshire Views

Southampton City Art Gallery
From: 29 Apr '17 11:00am -
To: 19 Aug '17 05:00pm

Spanning a decade of the artist’s work, this exhibition is an examination of subject, surface and material.

Early works on canvas inspired by the Itchen Valley are displayed alongside a series of paintings created from film shot out of car and train windows. These split second glimpses of scenery are stretched across the surface of aluminum and capture a lasting impression of the accumulated blur of speed, colour and shape of the whirring landscape.

In a new mixed media installation created for this show Hall uses the setting of Southampton Water to explore the differences between the analogue skills of draughtmanship and digital technology. At various points the artist will be working in the gallery, publicly painting elements of her projected film directly onto a large canvas. This work is playful, but it also questions our preconceptions.

This exhibition forms part of the Gallery’s Recording the Region series which invites artists working locally to display new works inspired by the surrounding area.

ROSSANO SPORTIELLO

Award-winning jazz pianist Rossano Sportiello was born in Vigevano, Italy on 1 June 1974. He began studying the piano at the age of 9 under the tutelage of Italian classical pianist Carlo Villa and continued until his graduation in classical piano from the Conservatory in 1996. By the age of 16, Rossano was performing professionally at jazz venues in the Milan area. In 1992, he joined one of Europe’s historic jazz bands, the “Milano Jazz Gang” touring with the group throughout Italy and West Europe until the end of 2000. In the same year, Rossano met legendary jazz pianist and educator, Barry Harris, who became a mentor and good friend. Mr. Harris has touted Rossano as “the best stride piano player” he has ever heard and on several occasions has invited Rossano to perform during his own performances.

Stylistically, although international critics consider Rossano a follower of Ralph Sutton, Dave McKenna and Barry Harris, the influence of other great masters can be heard in his playing, such as Fats Waller, Teddy Wilson, Art Tatum, Count Basie, Earl Hines, Ellis Larkins and Bill Evans, to name a few. Rossano was introduced as a soloist by trombonist/arranger Dan Barrett and drew international acclaim at the 2002 Ascona Jazz Festival (Switzerland) while performing with the eight-piece, all-star American band led by Barrett, which was enthusiastically received by the audience and critics alike. Rossano has performed several times at Ascona since and standing ovations after his performances are not uncommon. In July, at the 25th anniversary of the festival, Rossano received the 2009 Ascona Jazz Award in recognition of his expertise and mastery of jazz piano, in particular stride piano. Rossano made his first trip to the U.S. and was introduced to the American audience at the invitation of Mat Domber (Arbors Records) to perform at the 2003 “March of Jazz” party in Clearwater Beach, Florida. Following his marriage to American writer, Lala Moore, in 2007, Rossano established himself in New York City.

Rossano has performed with the world’s finest jazz luminaries, such as Slide Hampton, Clark Terry, Barry Harris, Dan Barrett, Kenny Davern, Bucky Pizzarelli, Bob Wilber, Warren Vache, Bob Cranshaw, Mickey Roker, Harry Allen, Howard Alden, Joe Wilder, Eddie Locke, Joe La Barbera, Scott Hamilton, Jake Hanna, Houston Person, Bill Charlap, Dick Hyman and many others. In recent years Rossano has been in great demand in the United States appearing at New York venues such as the 92nd Street Y, Town Hall, the United Nations and Shanghai Jazz in New Jersey, as well as at the main jazz parties and festivals, including The San Diego Jazz Party, Chautauqua Jazz Festival, North Carolina Jazz Party, Rochester Jazz Festival, Odessa Jazz Party, Newport Beach Jazz Party, Arbors Records Invitational Jazz Piano Party, Rocky Mountains Jazz Party and the Roswell Jazz Festival. Internationally, Rossano has performed regularly at the Blackpool Swinging Jazz Party, Norwich Jazz Party, Nairn International Jazz Festival, Edinburgh Jazz Festival, Spoleto Piano Festival and Lucerne Piano Festival and at acclaimed venues such as the Philarmonie (Luxembourg), Teatro Alla Scala (Milan), Marians Jazz Room (Switzerland), Lionel Hampton Jazz Club (Paris), Blue Note (Milan ), Printzregentertheatre (Munchen-Germany) and Schloss Elmau (Germany), to name a few. Since 2008, Rossano has performed regularly with the Harry Allen Quartet. On 4 May 2011, in his home town of Vigevano, Italy, Rossano received the prestigious Vittorio Ramella award, which is bestowed upon native persons of Vigevano who through their profession have made a significant contribution to the world and distinguished themselves in the international community.

Rossano has recorded four solo piano CDs, including In the Dark (2004, Sackville); Piano On My Mind (2005, Jazz Connaisseur), which won the “Prix Du Jazz Classique de l’Académie du Jazz de France”; Heart and Soul (2006, Arbors Records), selected by the French magazine Jazz Classique among the top 10 of the year; and most recently, It Amazes Me (2009, Sackville). Rossano recorded two duet CDs with bassist/singer Nicki Parrott on Arbors Records, Do It Again (2009) and People Will Say We’re In Love (2007), which was selected by The New Yorker magazine as one of the top 10 jazz CDs of 2007. Rossano also has three jazz CDs featuring classical music, Chopin in Jazz (2010, SwingBros), Schubert in Jazz (2011, SwingBros) and Listz in Jazz (SwingBros)

The Concorde is delighted to welcome Friends in Low Places – a world class band paying tribute to the biggest selling solo artist of the 20th Century, Garth Brooks. Fronted by well-known country singer Trevor Smyth, Friends in Low Places is back with a brand new show. With an eight-piece band made up of an array of top class musicians from around Ireland, the show features all the greatest hits of this American country-music legend such as ‘If Tomorrow Never Comes’, ‘Friends In Low Places’, ‘The Dance’, ‘Baton Rouge’, ‘Unanswered Prayers’ and many more. Trevor Smyth is recognized as one of the best Garth Brooks look-alikes and sound-alikes in the country and he, along with lead guitarist Ken Gillic, formed the tribute show in 2009. Since then, Friends in Low Places has developed the show into the exciting and electrifying world class production we see today. www.friendsinlowplaces.ie

“This fond tribute show uncannily matches the great man’s country authenticity with an exciting standard of showmanship and stage-craft that are rare in modern country music.” – Hot Press Magazine7

ALVIN is ELVIS

About Alvin:

Although it sounded like a zoo burning down, the very first time that I sang "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" and "Teddy Bear" at California Cliffs Holiday Park in Great Yarmouth, I knew I wanted to go into show business and for Christmas 1972 , my parents bought me my first guitar.

I formed my first band "Capacity Crowd" in 1974. Due to musical indifferencies, Capacity Crowd split in 1981, with the band wanting to take a more musical route and me, well, I wanted to take more of a cabaret step forward, hence later that year the formation of "The Itsy Bitsy Band", a comedy show band, pictured here in 1985.

For 9 years, the "The Itsy Bitsy Band" toured all over the world, performing in hotels, holiday centres and also to HM Forces. As time went by, with the continual demand and requests for my "Elvis" sector of the show, it became apparent that this would be my next step forward, so in 1990... "Alvin, the ultimate Elvis tribute" was born.

“Alvin - the ultimate Elvis tribute" is great fun to do and having been an avid Elvis fan since the age of 12, it is a great honour for me to get to play my hero at least 3 or 4 times a week.

FRENCH QUARTER JAZZ BAND

The declared aim of the French Quarter All Stars is to play the authentic jazz from the birthplace of jazz, New Orleans. The French Quarter is, and has been since 1722, the area at the heart of New Orleans. Visitors today will still find many of the original buildings including the one on St Peters Street where they’ll find Preservation Hall. The ‘Hall’ as it is known locally, has, for many years been the focal point for keeping alive the music that the city gave to the world. The French Quarter All Stars are a band from the U.K. that shares that enthusiasm. The majority of the band personnel are all past professional members of well U.K. jazz bands such as Chris Barber, Monty Sunshine, Ken Colyer, Pete Allen and the Pasadena Roof Orchestra.

THE DUTCH SWING COLLEGE BAND

A popular saying goes: "There are two kinds of music, good music and bad music". For the true fan of good traditional jazz music the choice is simple, because there is only one Dutch Swing College Band. The Dutch Swing College Band started out as an amateur-college combo on liberation day (1945, may 5th) and through the years it has grown into a worldfamous jazz ensemble that has toured all five continents to much acclaim. The DSC played a prominent role during the post-war period. At the time many youngsters fell under the spell of the original Amerian music: jazz. The band, which has existed for more than sixty years, has given concerts all over the world and the sounds have been registered on practically all types of sound recordings since 1945. The band also appeared frequently on TV and in film productions. Through the years many big names in jazz music were backed by the DSC, from Sidney Bechet, Joe Venuti and Rita Reys to Teddy Wilson. The expression "The Haque School" was born out of the big influence of the DSC on the Dutch jazz scene. Deservedly many jazz fans consider the DSC almost as an institution. Fortunately, the Dutch Swing College Band has never presented itself as a show or glitter orchestra. The musicians have always succeeded in capturing the public's attention with their excellent jazz performances. Cheap show tricks were absolutely out of the question. In 1960, the DSC turned professional. Throughout the music's evolution and in spite of quite a number af personnel changes (and contary to many imitators) the DSC remained the showpiece of Dutch traditional jazz music. Bob Kaper heads the current line-up, in succession to Frans Vink Jr (1945-'46), Joop Schrier (1955-'60) and Peter Schilperoort (1946-'55 and 1960-'90). From the very beginning the most striking characteristic of the band has always been its unique and recognizable sound. In other words, no recordings of American virtuosos were ever copied: the DSC created their own interpretations, arrangements or compositions. An entirely personal approach. The current line-up of the highly experienced band has proved that the old name Dutch Swing College Band still guarantees professional performances of traditional jazz music of international standard! AN ENTERTAINING EVENING with NIGEL FARAGE

Unlike most politicians, Nigel Farage had a successful career in business before he stood for office, working on the City metals exchange. He gave up that career not to feather his own nest, but to campaign for a cause he believed in, becoming a founding member of the UK Independence Party (UKIP) in the early 1990s, and its first ever election candidate in 1994.

UKIP was founded to campaign against Britain's membership of the EU and restore its status as a free-standing, self-governing democracy with an independent voice in the councils of the world. It was not a fashionable cause among the elite politicians and privileged commentariat, but Nigel stuck by it faithfully.

In time, he built the party up from winning a handful of votes in its early days to coming first in the European elections of 2014. One year on, he achieved a record four million votes for the party at the General Election, defying all odds to make UKIP the third-largest political force in the country.

Nigel is widely recognised as the man whose relentless campaigning forced the ruling Conservative Party, which had been haemorrhaging votes to UKIP, to finally offer a referendum on EU membership before that General Election; a promise they were held to after winning a small and unexpected parliamentary majority.

More than that, Nigel is credited with having been the man who won over the blue-collar, working-class voters who carried the day for the Leave movement in that referendum, refusing to shy away from the issues of immigration and quality of life which the Labour Party and the growth-at-all-costs elites running the Conservative Party had long failed to acknowledge.

Described as "the most important British politician of the last decade and the most successful", Nigel's resignation has left a hole in the nation's political fabric. Through skill, sheer determination and more than a little chutzpah, he has transformed UKIP into a permanent fixture of our democracy, achieved his lifetime's ambition of an independent Britain, and rocked the political Establishment across an entire continent.

In so doing, Nigel has proven the exception to the the iron rule that "all political lives end in failure", something which should come as no surprise for a man who has enjoyed a thoroughly exceptional career. The history of not just the United Kingdom but of Europe and the world is changed because of him, and his place within it is etched in stone

Susan Hill’s acclaimed ghost story comes dramatically alive in Stephen Mallatratt’s ingenious stage adaptation.

Now celebrating 27 terrifying years in the West End, Robin Herford’s gripping production is a brilliantly successful study in atmosphere, illusion and controlled horror.

A lawyer obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over him and his family by the spectre of a Woman in Black, engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It all begins innocently enough, but then, as they reach further into his darkest memories, they find themselves caught up in a world of eerie marshes and moaning winds.

Matinee 2:30pm shows available Thursday 18th and Saturday 20th May.

Capture the Castle: British Artists and the Castle from Turner to Le Brun

Southampton City Art Gallery
From: 26 May '17 11:00am -
To: 02 Sep '17 05:00pm

This is the first ever large-scale art exhibition on the subject of British castles. Steeped in history and legend, these extraordinary buildings exude a powerful and brooding presence. Turner, Constable, Girtin, Cotman, Ibbetson, Sandby, Varley and many others travelled to castles throughout Britain in search of the Picturesque. Castles, often sited in spectacular locations, were the perfect subject for the Romantic movement of the early 19th century that embraced the heroic past. The Gothic Revival was to spawn a new wave of castle building.

Showcasing the finest historic and contemporary castle artists and combining history with art, this exhibition conjures the mystique, excitement and prestige of the castle from Iron Age hill forts to Victorian reproductions and fantasy castles. It will include famous and rarely seen works from public and private collections, including loans from the Tate, British Museum and the V&A.

The exhibition will include a fully illustrated catalogue, which has been generously sponsored by the Punter Southall Group.

“… the Andrews Sisters-style close harmonies are immaculate… they weave past and present together so deftly…” Clive Davis, The Times.

When you start out retro, you don’t expect to become true originals – but that’s the position The Puppini Sisters (Marcella Puppini, Kate Mullins and Emma Smith) are delighted to find themselves in. In the ten years since they began, it’s extraordinary how many others have followed their trailblazing lead, whether it’s the gorgeous close harmony singing style, the swing-style re-workings of modern pop songs, or their impeccable retro-futuristic fashion sense.

With four albums under their waist-cinching belts and a fifth ‘The Highlife’ set for release this March, the Puppini Sisters are now regarded as the world’s leading close-harmony group, and count Prince Charles, The Manhattan Transfer and Michael Bublé amongst their fans.

The group was founded in 2004 by Marcella Puppini after she was inspired by the film The Triplets of Belleville (2003) by Sylvain Chomet and it’s Oscar nominated film soundtrack by Benoit Charest, and in 2005 they were signed by Universal Classics and Jazz. They released their first album ‘Betcha Bottom Dollar’ in 2006, produced by the Oscar nominated Charest – the album was labelled the fastest selling jazz album of all time when it hit no. 1 in the UK Jazz Charts and subsequently went gold.

The Puppini Sisters quickly became musical pioneers of the neo burlesque/swing scene in the early noughties and continue to this day as mainstays of the underground performance art scene. Since then, the group have collaborated with Michael Bublé and have appeared on some of the world’s most prestigious stages, including Koko and The Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London, l’Olympia in Paris, The Great Hall of Conservatory in Moscow, The Roxy and The Greek in L.A. (both with Cyndi Lauper), B.B. King’s in New York, The Montreal Jazz Fesival and Glastonbury Festival.

The Puppini Sister’s television appearances include Royal Variety Show, The Graham Norton Show, Strictly Come Dancing, Loose Women, This Morning, Big Brother’s Little Brother, Hell’s Kitchen, Jonathan Creek, The View (on ABC), Carole King and Friends at Christmas (BBC4), The Late Late Show, The View (US) and Michael Buble’s Christmas Special on NBC.

The Puppini Sister’s multi-platinum selling ‘Jingle Bellscollaboration with Michael Bublé paved the way for further recording collaborations, numerous worldwide TV appearances, Christmas Specials, The Graham Norton Show and a live show with Michael at The O2 Arena in London.

Their new album ‘The Highlife’, released March 2016, was funded completely by a Pledge campaign and produced by Fred DeFaye with musical arrangements and original compositions by Marcella Puppini and Kate Mullins including the self penned first single Is This The High Life. The album also features classics from the Thirties to the Fifties (Tico Tico, Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive) and jazzy reinventions of pop hits (Changes, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun)

Following on the success of ‘The High Life’, The Puppini Sisters released a Deluxe Double Edition, featuring remixes of all tracks. The idea came from the Verve Remixed series of the early 2000s, which were popular at the time The Puppini Sisters first got signed to Universal.

This new album, their sixth, sees the Puppini’s work with an international extended family of friends and regular collaborators: The Gentlemen Callers of Los Angeles, 30 Hurts, Kyoshi Island, F:III-Y (from chart-topping Electro Swing outfit Caravan Palace), The Real Tuesday Weld, Bart & Baker, Andrew Beaton, Martin Kolarides, and Peter Ibbetson.

“This act is fun from start to finish!” The Stage

All the greatest hits are featured in the show; from the disco sounds of Saturday Night Fever to Sixties classics like Massachusetts and Words and all those Bee Gee songs made famous by other artists such as Chain Reaction (Diana Ross), Islands in the Stream (Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton), Tragedy (Steps), How Deep is Your Love (Take That) and Grease (Frankie Valli).

JUDY CARMICHAEL TRIO with Colin Oxley and Dave Green

"Judy Carmichael is a great entertainer. Her playing is masterly and her linking material show her to be a raconteur in the Ustinov mold". BBC Radio

" . . . astounding, flawless, captivating" The New York Times

". . .is a major figure in keyboard jazz performance" The San Francisco Examiner

"Judy is a one-woman force for good; more to the point, she's a player of extraordinary accomplishment who has made stride piano relevant again." The Times

Grammy nominated American pianist, vocalist, songwriter, Judy Carmichael, will debut some of her new compositions, along with gems from the American Songbook, in an evening of swinging piano, sultry vocals and sassy humour. Count Basie nicknamed Judy "Stride" in reference to her mastery of that early piano style popularized by Thomas "Fats" Waller and James P. Johnson.

Jazz Times, America's premier jazz periodical, comparing Judy's vocals to Peggy Lee, wrote: "Carmichael exhibits a truly remarkable ability to channel Lee's breathy invitingness and her befogged insouciance."

Judy Carmichael appears frequently on radio and TV throughout the world and maintains a busy international touring schedule. She is popular with both jazz and cabaret audiences with her soulful, swinging interpretations of the Great American Songbook, and equally impressive hilarious, improvisational anecdotes. Her wit and musical knowledge come together on her weekly radio broadcast Judy Carmichael's Jazz Inspired, now in its 17th year, where she talks with celebrated creative people about their love for jazz and how it inspires them, everyone from Seth MacFarlane and Chevy Chase to Robert Redford and Billy Joel.

KIM WILDE

Kim Wilde was born in Chiswick, West London to legendary 1950’s British Rock’n’Roll singer, Marty Wilde, and his wife Joyce – a member of the singing group, The Vernons Girls. Her first single release, ‘Kids In America’ in 1981, was a worldwide hit paving the way for a recording career which has so far yielded twelve studio albums and in excess of thirty singles, bringing success in every major record market and sales of 10 million and 20 million respectively.

Single successes included ‘Chequered Love’, ‘Water On Glass’, ‘Cambodia’, ‘View From A Bridge’, ‘You Keep Me Hangin’ On’ – a worldwide success and a number one in the USA – ‘Another Step (Closer To You)’ (a duet with Junior Giscombe), ‘You Came’, ‘Never Trust A Stranger’ and ‘Four Letter Word’.

In 1983 Kim was voted Best British Female Singer at the BPI Awards, while “live” highlights include performing to over 2 million people on a five month European stadium tour with Michael Jackson in 1988, and supporting David Bowie across Europe on his 1990 Greatest Hits Stadium Tour.

A sabbatical from the music industry – prompted by marriage and motherhood – gave Kim’s passion for horticulture an opportunity to ‘blossom’, leading to the publication of two books (‘Gardening With Children’ and ‘The First Time Gardener’), numerous gardening columns and yielded a Gold Medal and Best in Show in 2005 at The Chelsea Flower Show

After a huge hit duet single with the German vocalist, Nena, in 2003 Kim was encouraged to make a new solo album and, having signed to EMI Germany in 2005, she enjoyed a Top 20 Album (‘Never Say Never’) and single (‘You Came 2006’) in the summer of 2006.

In 2007 she took this project “on the road”, performing over 50 live concerts – including two solo tours – with dates in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Holland and Denmark and numerous Festival appearances across Europe. In December 2008 Kim appeared alongside Robin Gibb, Tears For Fears and 10cc – with a 40 piece orchestra and the Angels of Harlem Gospel Choir – in 20 arena shows for the annual ‘Night Of The Proms’ tour in Germany, and she completed another solo European Tour in April 2009.

In September 2008 Kim was signed up by the UK’s number one London commercial radio station, Magic 105.4; five years later she still presents a weekly show, “Secret Songs” every Sunday from 10am-2pm.

Kim’s first album of entirely new and original recordings in 15 years, ‘Come Out & Play’, was released across Continental Europe in September 2010 and attained Top Ten status in Germany and Switzerland and the ‘Come Out & Play Live’ Tour performed to packed houses in February-March 2011.

A new album, ‘Snapshots’, comprising cover versions of Kim’s favourite songs from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and noughties was released in late 2011. Again a Top 20 album, Kim took the ‘Snapshots & Greatest Hits’ show on the road in 2012.

2013 has seen the re- packaging and re-release of a collector’s bonus edition of Kim’s biggest-selling album, ‘Close’ – which celebrated it’s 25th Birthday earlier this year – and the year ends with the release of album number thirteen; ‘Wilde Winter Songbook’ is a collection of Christmas classics plus brand new original seasonal songs.

MAXI JAZZ & THE E-TYPE BOYS

What do you do if you’ve spent the last twenty years touring the globe, forging a fearsome live reputation with electronic wizards and festival favourites, Faithless?

If you’re Maxi Jazz, it’s simple; form a guitar band.

Frontman, Buddhist rapper Maxi Jazz was one third of one of the most successful electronic acts in the world. To date, Faithless have sold over 15 million records worldwide, toured the globe and been dubbed responsible for the creation of a whole new sonic landscape for Dance Music; the first to mix dance, hip-hop, blues, folk and classical music – a dramatic bed for the thoughtful lyricist. In 2013, on a hiatus from Faithless and with no plan or agenda, Maxi got back into the studio and armed with nothing but a guitar and his notebook began to write. Influenced by everything from Todd Rundgren to Sly Stone, from James Brown to JJ Cale, from Jimi Hendrix to Parliament as well, of course as the ‘Golden Age’ of Reggae, a new sound emerged.

Back to his roots, the sound incorporated melodic funk and blues mixed with reggae beats, dub baselines, Jamaican melodies, and smooth insightful, penetrating lyrics from one of the most iconic wordsmiths of our generation. Lyrically poetic and playful the music distinguishes more than ever his great love of the human spirit. It was time to call in back up.
Enlisting the help of some of his favourite musicians whose paths he’d crossed alone the way, and exciting, powerful live outfit emerged – Maxi Jazz & The E-Type Boys.
Guitar: Jake Libretto Bass: Alexis Countouris Slide Guitar: Chris Dover

Drums: Martin Carling Percussion: Basil Isaac Keys: Chris Jerome

Vocals: Leigh Kenny aka LSK and Azadeh
Maxi Jazz & The E-Type Boys – Simple..Not Easy - The Album is out now.

JOHN MADDOCKS JAZZMEN

The John Maddocks Jazzmen Hail from Dorset and Hampshire, they reached their 40th birthday in 2011.
John had previously enjoyed success with The Black Bottom Stompers a band which he formed whilst in London and which still exists today.

The Jazzmen have their own sound brought about mainly by the unique style of John’s clarinet playing. John was originally inspired by the fine clarinettist Johnny Dodds, but John is his own man and encompasses influences from all over the traditional jazz spectrum. Personnel changes have been few over the years but one or two in the band can still claim to have been at least twenty five years younger when they first joined. The Band is well known for its drive and cohesiveness and the inclusion of some seldom heard tunes in the repertoire.

TONY LEWIS as ROBBIE
For the past decade Tony has been wowing audiences worldwide with his amazing portrayal of Britain's Greatest Entertainer, Robbie Williams! After making his debut in Trevor Chance's 'Legends,' Tony has gone on to perform all across the globe, leaving audiences constantly gagging for more! He turns heads wherever he goes leaving onlookers asking, '"Is it or isn't it?"
In 2005 Tony was lucky enough to meet Robbie in person, chatting about women, music and most importantly football, even gaining his idol's approval with Robbie saying, "I think it's great, I'm really flattered! It's bloody hard work being me!"

In 2008 Tony beat all his 'Robbie' competition, landing a spot on BBC ONE's, 'The One And Only,' performing in front of 7 million viewers for 6 successive weeks, eventually bowing out in the final to Dusty Springfield!

The resemblance is so uncanny that tony has appeared for numerous promotional campaigns and T.V shows throughout Europe but the highlight must be playing Robbie in a series of official short films for the album, 'Rudebox,'

Tony's show covers all of the greatest hits, with a few special surprises, capturing the true spirit of everything Robbie!

The look's, the moves, the voice, the ego!!!!!! This show has it all!

TYLER JON as GARY BARLOW

An extremely talented performer with an impressive vocal ability and a wide repertoire of songs to please any crowd. Since taking to the stage as Gary Barlow, Tyler has wowed venues up and down the country with his likeness to the "Take That" star vocally and in appearance. TALON

Over the last two decades Talon have risen from humble beginnings to one of the most successful theatre touring shows in the UK and the ‘20th ANNIVERSARY TOUR’ will once again feature all those classic ‘Eagles Greatest Hits’ from their timeless back catalogue including ‘Hotel California’, ‘Take It Easy’, ‘One Of These Nights’, Take It To The Limit, ‘Desperado’, ‘Lyin’ Eyes’, ‘Life In The Fast Lane’ and many more. This world class seven piece band are a phenomenon and have truly transcended the tag of ‘tribute’. They have become a brand name in their own right who are not only revered by their peers, respected by the music industry but dearly loved by their massive and expanding fan base that together have become a ‘family’. In the summer of 2016 Talon were nominated in seven different categories by the ‘Agents Association of Great Britain’ at the ‘National Tribute Music Awards’ and winning ‘OFFICIAL UK No. 1’ (Eagles tribute show), ‘MARKETING & PR’, ‘LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD’ and the big one… ‘BEST BAND’ (in all categories). The ability of Talon to evolve and go from strength to strength in delivering bigger and better shows year on year continues once again with what promises to be an EVENT…

“Talon perform the songs of the Eagles with reverence and super talent”.

From: 17 Jun '17 11:00am -
To: 17 Jun '17 04:00pm

Castles exert their political power as much through their visual presence in a landscape as through actual military might. But what happens when that presence is also gendered as feminine? This study day is part of a series of events organised by the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Culture at the University of Southampton in collaboration with Southampton City Art Gallery’s impressive new exhibition ‘Capture the Castle’, and is exploring the strong hold that castles have always had on the imagination and in culture. This study day will explore the castle as an expression of female space in literature since medieval times. It will include talks on Shakespeare and modern drama, as well as a tour of the exhibition led by the curators of the exhibition.

The Study Day will be held in the lecture theatre at Southampton City Art Gallery.

LIAM WHITE as MICHAEL BUBLE and TONY WHITE as NEIL DIAMOND

Liam’s show, ‘The Bublé Experience’ mixes the very best tracks from one of the most successful male artists to date: Michael Bublé. The show is relaxed and not like the usual ‘Bublé Tribute Act’. Liam performs and entertains in his own unique, personal style, simply singing and performing the music he loves. The show includes the much loved classics such as 'Feeling Good', 'Me and Mrs Jones', 'Call Me Irresponsible', 'Mack The Knife’ 'I've Got The World On A String', 'Everything', 'You Don't Know Me', 'All I Do Is Dream Of You', 'Sway', 'Home', 'Hold On', 'Cry Me A River' and many, many more!

There will be a few surprises too, from an unusual instrument to an unexpected duet! Whilst basing itself on the music of Bublé, the show also celebrates Liam’s love of simply good music; Jazz, Swing, Soul, Motown and Rhythm and Blues. With unbeatable hits from artists all the way from Ray Charles to Sam Cooke to Paolo Nutini, Liam’s carefully thought-out programme will ensure any audience is entertained all night long!

TONY WHITE sings NEIL DIAMOND

Come dine with us in the Moldy Fig whilst listening to the beautiful ballads and catchy tunes of the legendary singer, songwriter and performer that is Neil Diamond. Tony sings the diamond classics with true passion and feeling so come, wine and dine and enjoy a 'Diamond' night with Tony White!

MARY WILSON of THE SUPREMES

Ms. Mary Wilson still performs with the same passion as she did singing with the original Supremes, but the world renowned celebrity is now using her fame and flair to promote humanitarian efforts to end hunger, raise AIDS awareness and encourage world peace.

While Ms. Wilson is best known as a founding member of the world’s most famous female trio – they recorded 12 No.1 hits from 1964 to 1969 – the legendary singer’s career did not stop there, and she continues to soar to untold heights.

Ms. Wilson is a best-selling author, motivational speaker, businesswoman, former U.S. Cultural Ambassador, the recipient of an Associate Degree from New York University in 2001, and an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Paine College in Augusta, Georgia. In 2007, Ms. Wilson was named international spokeswoman for the Humpty Dumpty Institute, a platform she uses to condemn the death and destruction caused by hidden landmines and unexploded ordnances in less developed countries.

DEREK NASH, DAVE NEWTON, GEOFF GASCOYNE and SEBASTION DE KROM

If you’ve heard Jools Holland’s Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, you’ll have heard Derek Nash. He’s a prominent member. But to get some idea of the sheer breadth of his accomplishment as a saxophonist, composer and bandleader, you should hear this. From smooth cool to groovy funk, to ingeniously recast standards, to one quite gorgeous ballad, the music fizzes with energy, even at its most restrained. Pianist David Newton, bassist Geoff Gascoyne and drummer Sebastiaan de Krom complete the band, along with guest trumpeter Martin Shaw, and it all goes to show what five brilliant jazz musicians can do when left to get on with it. The album title, in case you wondered, is a quotation from the collected wit and wisdom of Thelonious Monk

THE KILKENNYS

A traditional Irish folk and ballad band, The Kilkennys are noted for their dynamic arrangements, energetic performances and charismatic rapport with audiences across the globe.

Picking up the mantle left by acts such as The Dubliners and The Clancy Brothers, the 4 piece group continue to conquer tour circuits in Europe and the U.S. In the past years The Kilkennys have shared the stage with renowned Irish artists such as Shane McGowan, Sharron Shannon and Finbar Furey. Continuing their hectic tour schedule 2016 saw the band perform on the main stage at Milwaukee Irish Fest - the largest Irish Festival in the world.

“The Kilkennys are a great band upholding the Irish Folk/Ballad tradition with a contemporary style. Matching the passion &

stories with these songs. The Kilkennys live is a fantastic show”

- Barry Stapleton, Milwaukee Irish Fest

The band was established between schoolmates and began touring the length and breadth of Ireland in 1998. In 2008 they decided to name themselves ‘The Kilkennys' after their beloved home, Kilkenny City. Now based in South East Ireland, the group have evolved through the years and are anchored by founding members Davey Cashin (vocals, mandolin, banjo, guitar, whistles), Tommy Mackey (bass, acoustic guitar, vocals), long time member Robbie Campion (banjo, guitar, madolin, vocals) and newest member Mick Martin ( bodhran, uilleann pipes, low whistles, guitar, vocals).

After releasing their live album and DVD ‘Meet The Kilkennys’, Radio and TV appearance soon followed, which included RTE’s Late Late Show, where they preformed their single ‘Shine on Kilkenny’ , an original song released to coincide with Kilkenny winning All Ireland hurling final for a forth year in a row, a sporting celebration also headlined by The Kilkennys. Their much acclaimed studio album ‘The Colour Of Freedom’ (2014) features a mix of original material and well known ballads like 'Rocky Road to Dublin’ and ‘South Australia’. The strong connection between the band and their music is showcased in this album, with compelling musicianship and pristine vocal harmonies.

Seeking to preserve their status for re-introducing Irish folk and ballads to a young audience while capturing the hearts of the more seasoned traditional music lover, The Kilkennys embark on their new show featuring new material, set to be released later in the year. The bands popularity continues to grow with every energy filled, toe tapping and hand clapping night of entertainment.

THE MANFREDS

Hits, Jazz and Blues Tour 2017

The '60s group Manfred Mann is now considered, more than ever, one of the finest and most respected bands from that era. Their numerous pop hits were R&B based with an undercurrent of jazz - a very unusual but winning combination of playing style and substance.

As a result, their records have a timeless quality and, some 55 years on, The Manfreds, with original ‘front man’ Paul Jones, will be performing many of their hits, including ‘Do Wah Diddy Diddy’, one of the most popular and instantly recognisable songs of the ‘60’s, and still the biggest audience pleaser at their concerts, along with a mix of Jazz and Blues tracks from some of their best known albums.

Paul Jones, with his unique harmonica sound, will be joined by Mike Hugg on keyboards, Tom McGuinness on lead guitar, Rob Townsend on drums, Marcus Cliffe on bass guitar and Simon Currie on saxophone/ flute.

THE FAWLTY TOWERS COMEDY DINNER SHOW

Eat in restaurant run by Basil, Sybil and Manuel where the characters serve their guests a hilarious 3 course dinner.

The CHEF’S DRUNK, there’s a RAT on the loose, the HEALTH INSPECTOR is on his way and a GNOME has just turned up in the restaurant.

Basil only manages to make matters worse, Sybil has been hitting the brandy and Manuel is... Well, he’s just Manuel.

Fire drills, Germans, kippers and corpses. With everything building to a typically Fawlty Towers climax.

The show begins in the bar over pre-dinner drinks, where the audience are greeted by the characters. Then, when the time comes, Basil invites everyone through into the restaurant where they are served a three course meal.

The show is half-scripted and half-improvised by the actors, taking place around the audience whilst they eat. It references all the most famous bits from the original show whilst having a narrative all of its own.

THE DIME NOTES

The Dime Notes dig back into the blues-drenched sounds of clarinet-driven 1920’s New Orleans jazz, unearthing a repertoire of stomps, blueses, and forgotten gems of the era from musicians such as Johnny Dodds, Jelly Roll Morton and Red Nichols.

Fronted by Chris Barber’s long-time clarinetist David Horniblow, an established figure on the European jazz stage and American pianist/composer/musicologist and Jelly Roll Morton specialist Andrew Oliver, a recent arrival to the UK, the band is anchored by the unstoppable pulse of the UK’s finest rhythm guitarist Dave Kelbie, accompanist in Evan Christopher’s Django a la Creole, John Etheridge’s Sweet Chorus and many more. The bass chair is occupied by London bassist Tom Wheatley, well known across the international scene for his swing and versatility and in demand across many genre boundaries with his huge sound and stylistic versatility.

The Dime Notes present a fresh take on a timeless style, emphasizing the propulsive grooves and sultry melodies which made early jazz revolutionary, controversial, and wildly popular.

COLLABRO

Collabro are one the world’s most successful musical theatre groups. They met in 2014 above a pub in London for their first rehearsal and only a month later went on to rouse the whole of the Hammersmith Apollo into a standing ovation during their first ever public performance of Stars in their first audition for Britain’s Got Talent.

Having won their semi-final heat with over 63% of the votes, they then won the overall competition with one of the biggest majorities ever and subsequently signed to Simon Cowell’s label Syco, becoming label mates with the likes of One Direction, Little Mix, Susan Boyle and Il Divo.

In the two years since the competition, Collabro have released a number one debut album Stars, and their follow up album Act Two peaked at number two in the charts in the summer of 2015. They have performed at the Royal Variety Performance, twice on Britain’s Got a Talent, most recently the ten-year grand final compilation of past contestants, and become enormously successful internationally.

SUSSEX JAZZ KINGS

Dave Stradwick, the well-known player of hot, traditional, jazz trumpet, leads the band. Early in 2000, Dave and Lesley Stradwick moved from their London home to Sussex for a “quieter life!” Dave had been the leader of Vintage Jazz for many years and also played with other busy bands. A decision was made to leave Vintage and so cut down on the workload to give time to renovating the Sussex house. It soon became obvious, that people missed his humour fronting a band, and he decided to form a new band, The ‘Sussex Jazz Kings’. It started with a ‘low key approach’, but natured the ‘fun element’ for which Vintage had been renown. Inevitably this, combined with the fine musical ability of the chosen musicians, resulted in the band becoming more and more popular around the M25 area and beyond. Dave now concentrates on leading his own band again. The band has been resident band in a club at Box Hill near Dorking, Surrey’ they regularly play to a crowded club and take the opportunity to introduce new numbers, judging their reaction before inflicting them on unsuspecting audiences elsewhere. In many peoples opinion, the band is now a fine exponent of happy traditional jazz, in the broad New Orleans style. The ‘jazzers’ come back every week, so the band must be doing something right. The band now plays at all major jazz festivals and tours the country to perform at most great jazz clubs, in the last few years they have had many bookings across Europe and beyond.
