From: 28 Jul '18 10:00am -
To: 31 Jan '21 04:30pm

As a centre we are aim is to help the community we serve in anyway possible. Management and retailers have recently undertaken an amazing awareness training session by a Dementia Friends Champion to help us understand some of the challenges faced by people who are living with dementia, autism or other sensory issues whilst shopping with us.

With this in mind we have introduced Sensory Sundays every last Sunday in each month.

These changes  we have introduced such as requesting the stores reduce the volume of their music and security/cleaning staff to be available to assist wherever possible. We really hope that this will help make a difference and be more inclusive. Very much like to involve our community as a focus group, to feedback any of the issues they find which makes shopping a challenge. If you would like to be involved in this please contact us for more information.

This will be every Sunday throughout the year!

Westquay's Quiet Hour

Westquay Shopping Centre
From: 08 Jul '19 09:00am -
To: 31 Dec '20 10:00am

Starting Monday 1st July 2019 Westquay will be running a regular weekly quiet hour. This will involve the centre and its retailers working together to create a quieter than normal shopping environment. The hour is aimed at visitors, young and old that find large public spaces, noise and crowds of people difficult to deal with.

We hope this offer builds on the great work that’s been achieved over the last year with a range of our community partners to continuously work towards Westquay being an accessible environment throughout the year.

Westquay's quiet hour will take place every Monday 9am - 10am

KINGS & SCRIBES: THE BIRTH OF A NATION

Winchester Cathedral
From: 01 Oct '19 09:00am -
To: 31 Jan '25 05:00pm
THIS EXHIBITION IS CURRENTLY CLOSED.

Be one of the first to explore Kings and Scribes: The Birth of a Nation, a stunning new exhibition at Winchester Cathedral.
Winchester Cathedral is a living monument to the heritage of England and is one of the most historically significant buildings in Britain. From the time of Alfred the Great until after the Norman Conquest, Winchester was England’s capital and the Cathedral was its royal chapel. Much of England’s early history was based here and twelve English kings are believed to be buried here – meaning that Winchester can lay claim to being the first Royal Mausoleum. The opening of Kings and Scribes: The Birth of a Nation marks the culmination of an ambitious seven-year project to unlock the Cathedral’s stories and treasures by inspiring active engagement in the interpretation and exploration of our heritage.

Thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and other generous supporters, a spectacular three-level exhibition space in the South Transept will take visitors on a journey through over 1,000 years of history, whilst offering awe-inspiring views of the Cathedral.

There are four exciting galleries to explore:

A SCRIBE’S TALE
The Winchester Bible is the largest and finest of all surviving 12th-century English bibles. Hear the incredible story of how and why the Winchester Bible was made, in the Cathedral where it was created, and admire its exquisite illuminated initials and elaborate decorative schemes.

THE BIRTH OF A NATION
Winchester played a unique role in shaping early English history and Old Minster, the Anglo-Saxon Cathedral, lay at the centre of its foundation. Join us on an intriguing journey of discovery as we unearth the secrets hidden within the Cathedral’s mortuary chests, meet influential Anglo-Saxon kings in the city from which they ruled and discover the role of Winchester’s Anglo-Saxon and Norman Cathedrals in the birth of a nation.

DECODING THE STONES
Unlock the mysteries of Winchester Cathedral, a building which has been created, destroyed and remade over centuries of struggle and Civil War. Decoding the Stones will tell the story of the Cathedral itself, linking modern restoration works and contemporary craftspeople with their medieval predecessors.

THE MEZZANINE
Explore the realities of monastic life at Winchester Cathedral Priory with a fascinating rolling programme of displays from the Cathedral archives. The Mezzanine also provides access to the remarkable 17th-century Morley Library and its outstanding collection of books, which have remained in their current location for over 400 years.

*Pub Busting Prices*
Train fares are only £16 per person and just £3 per pint!

From: 04 Apr '20 12:00am -
To: 02 Sep '20 12:00am

April 2020 will see an exciting new addition at Marwell Zoo… the world exclusive toy brick event: SUPERSIZED!

The brand-new immersive adventure has been created with more than two million toy bricks and will include some of the deadliest and most deceptive creatures in the world, all blown up to enormous proportions. Follow the trail to discover more about each species and break the myth of these often-misunderstood creatures.

The larger than life brick adventure features up to 40 astonishing models of real-life creatures with an explosion of colour and size. From sneaky predators such as the fearless honey badger and venomous blue-ringed octopus, to the aptly named assassin bug, all creatures have been chosen for their colourful appearance in nature, unusual natural abilities and because they can be magnified to an eye-popping size. Guests will also be able to play games, build their own models and create toy brick graffiti.

The creative geniuses at BRICKLIVE say it will take their team of professional builders more than 10,000 hours to create the exclusive event.

The event will be on display at the zoo from 4 April to 2 September 2020. SUPERSIZED! will be included with general admission. Ticket prices cost from £18 per child (3-16 years) and £22 per adult, which include an optional donation. Children aged 2 and under go free and every penny spent at Marwell helps the charity support the zoo and its conservation projects in the UK and overseas.

Come and experience ‘A Date With Nature’ at the New Forest Reptile Centre.

Using the latest hi-tech gadgets you can look right into the tree-top nests of the New Forest Goshawk and watch their every move – from eggs hatching to food arriving and chicks leaving.

Want to find out more? Visit the New Forest Reptile Centre near Lyndhurst, where staff and volunteers are on hand to explain more about the bird’s behaviour and answer any questions as they have the live webcam on show to visitors.

You can also see unique wildlife viewed in ‘pods’ at the Centre, such as the reptiles and amphibians native to the New Forest. Discover the rare wildlife living in our National Park and learn how you can help protect our most vulnerable species.

Drop in for Wild Wednesdays during school holidays from 10.30am – 3.30pm, with reptile and bird quizzes, trails and activities.

A Date with Nature in the New Forest runs daily from Easter to the end of the summer holidays, 10.30am to 4pm. Entry to the Reptile Centre is free although donations for parking are welcome. The project is a partnership between us, the RSPB, Forestry Commission and Carnyx Wild.

Vintage Bus Days

Mid Hants Railway 'Watercress Line'
From: 03 May '20 11:30am -
To: 04 Oct '20 04:00pm

On the first Sunday of the month from May to October a FREE vintage bus service operates from Alresford Station.

You do not need to purchase a train ticket to ride this service.

The vintage bus leaves Alresford Station on a circular route through Bishop’s Sutton at the following times on a trip lasting 20 minutes:

11.30 12.00 12.30 13.00 13.30

then 14.30 15.00 15.30 16.00

Unfortunately, due to their age these buses do not have provision for wheelchairs.

This vintage bus service is operated by the Medstead Depot Omnibus Group, who are one of three groups under the Working Omnibus Museum Project Ltd, and their buses frequently visit running days and rallies around the South. MDOG is part of a charity established in the late 1980's which provides a storage depot for 18 vintage buses originally running bus services in the south of England. The buses are owned and maintained by individuals or small groups.

Don't forget the Alton Bus Rally in July every year; it's one of Britain's biggest bus rallies and running days.

The Marlands Shopping Centre Covid-19 Update

The Marlands Shopping Centre
From: 11 Jun '20 09:00am -
To: 31 Aug '20 05:00pm

As the government lift some restrictions on retail stores some of our previously closed store will begin to open from the 15th June and we will keep you updated on which stores are open and their opening times via our Facebook page. We are doing everything possible to reduce the risk of infection for our customers and colleagues, please see below for some of the extra measures we have introduced in the centre during this time to keep everyone safe.

We continue to closely follow the latest advice from the Government, which remains to be focused on hygiene and social distancing, staff have completed Covid-19 training courses online and are fully aware of the measures needed to prevent the spread of this virus.

Please be reassured that we are conducting additional deep cleaning of our facilities and all touch points such as handrails and lift buttons etc. Hand sanitising stations are being placed around the centre for customers and colleagues to use. Unfortunately, due to space restrictions it is not possible at the current time to open our public toilets as we could not provide adequate provision for social distancing. We are monitoring government advice and will keep you updated as to when the toilet facilities will be available.

We will monitor the amount of customers in the centre and if this exceeds the safe limit, we may need to ask you to wait at one of the entrances when you arrive to reduce the number of people in-the centre.

Once in the centre please follow the directional floor marking and distancing guides to create a safe flow of movement around the centre, especially when using lifts or escalators these will help you to keep a safe distance from others.

Some stores may need to restrict the number of customers entering the stores, again floor markings will help you to keep a safe distance from others whilst queueing for these stores and colleagues will be available to assist where necessary. Individual store will have clear signage displayed showing the steps taken by them to keep everyone safe within their store.

Please shop sensitively and respectfully and be kind to our colleagues, as they are all working hard to serve you; we are all in this together.

Marwell Zoo Covid-19 Update: We are preparing to open safely

Marwell Zoo
From: 11 Jun '20 09:00am -
To: 31 Jul '20 05:00pm

We’re preparing to welcome guests safely back as zoos are finally able to reopen.

The decision to relax restrictions on zoos is expected to take effect from Monday 15 June, however our reopening date is to be confirmed.

Marwell’s Chief Executive, explained: “We’re delighted that zoos will finally be able to reopen!

“We’re looking forward to welcoming guests back very soon, however we’ve always been working towards the government’s original indicated reopening date of early July as part of Stage 3 of the UK’s Covid 19 recovery strategy.

Our priority continues to be the safety of our guests, staff and animals. We are now busy making the necessary changes including bringing back and safety training our furloughed staff and installing all the physical measures to ensure guests can safely enjoy our 140-acre zoo. As soon as the preparations are complete, we will reopen.”

These measures will include two metre floor markings at enclosures and queues, new one-way routes on narrow paths, multiple hand sanitisation points, stringent cleaning and signage to inform guests.

The zoo will be strictly limiting numbers each day so all guests including members will need to book online before they arrive while all payments at the zoo will be by card only.

All indoor animal areas will remain closed and there will be no animal talks, touch tables, train services or public animal feeds. The indoor cafes will not be open however there will be catering outlets where takeaway food and drink will be available as well as extra outdoor picnic areas.

Our summer brick adventure event SUPERSIZED! is fully installed and will now be on display until 1 November 2020.

Guests will be ‘shrunk’ through a ‘minimising machine’ on arrival before meeting toy brick models SUPERSIZED to eye-popping proportions, including a three-metre tarantula, assassin bug, American kestrel and a towering red spitting cobra.

James, added: “The zoo may feel a bit different when we open but it will be the same warm welcome from all of us.

“Unlike many organisations, our costs are incredibly high, around £600,000 a month to ensure our animals receive the same high standards of care they are used to so each day the zoo is closed to guests, our need for the public’s support grows to help us cover basic costs such as animal food and bedding.

“It is great news the government has acknowledged the importance of supporting us to care for our incredible animals while giving families more options to reconnect with the natural world and spend time safely outdoors.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity of our supporters during these unprecedented times and it will take us a long time to recover. We can’t wait to welcome guests back as soon as possible.”

Royal Armouries Fort Nelson Covid-19 Update

Royal Armouries Fort Nelson
From: 11 Jun '20 09:00am -
To: 31 Jul '20 05:00pm

A message from Dr Edward Impey, Master of the Armouries

As you are probably aware, in response to recent Government advice, we have closed our three museum sites until further notice and postponed our planned season of events and exhibitions.

We are witnessing an unprecedented event in the history of the modern world. Entire populations are changing the way they live their lives and plan for the future.

At the Royal Armouries, we were really looking forward to opening a new exhibition in Leeds to mark the 500th anniversary of the Field of Cloth of Gold, and a thrilling season of activity, including an international jousting tournament. At Fort Nelson we were going to step back to the 1940s with a programme of Second World War-themed events.

History is our business, and the stories we tell about the objects in our care demonstrate the resilience and bravery of mankind and how we have adapted to challenging circumstances in the past. We have picked up the gauntlet thrown down to us by the pandemic, and whilst our doors are temporarily closed, there is still a wealth of fascinating history and amazing objects to explore on our website and through our social media channels. Meanwhile we are turning our energies to developing new digital content, bringing features from our postponed events and exhibitions programme online. We will also be supporting children and parents learning at home with engaging and enriching downloadable resources and short films.

Follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for the latest news, and visit our YouTube channel for action-packed films and behind-the-scenes insights.

We look forward to welcoming you back to our museums to enjoy first-hand the nation’s magnificent collection of arms and armour and discover what it tells us about the history and cultures of the world.

From: 11 Jun '20 09:00am -
To: 30 Sep '20 05:00pm

We are now open and we can’t wait to welcome you back.

We know it’s going to take some getting used to, and the way we all shop is going to feel different for a while.

Our priority is yours and our colleagues’ health and we have introduced a range of measures to keep us all safe. These include:

• A one-way system in the centre. Entry into centre will be using Arundel Circus, Above Bar entrances and following customer feedback we have now reopened the Multi-Storey bridge link entrance. Signage is in place throughout to help guide your journey while you shop.

• Clear signs throughout the centre reminding everyone of the need to social distance, and to avoid shopping in large groups.

• Hand sanitiser stations around the centre.

• Enhanced cleaning procedures throughout the centre.

• We are only accepting card or contactless payments at our Pay on Foot machines in the car park.

We’re restricting how many people can enter the centre and individual stores at any one time. This way, we can ensure everyone in the centre is able to social distance easily.

Seamanship Experience Day

SS Shieldhall
From: 30 Jun '20 10:00am -
To: 30 Sep '20 06:00pm

Dates

No dates are currently planned at this time. However if you are interested in a course please contact us. Details can be found below.

About the course

After a successful “pilot” training day, a new course has been designed which we believe will of interest to all.

We present an opportunity of a lifetime to come onboard an absolutely unique heritage steamship and to see and learn something of the intricacies of seamanship that allow this remarkable vessel to be sailed on her many coastal voyages. During the day you will visit the bridge to see how the ship is navigated, learn how to read a chart and to lay off a course, find out how an "imaginary" ship board fire is dealt with, work with ropes and perhaps learn some really useful knots, visit the machinery spaces to see the mighty triple expansion steam engines and finally for those wishing to have a go, a thrilling drive on the River Itchen in our rescue RIB.

These experience days will take place on the preserved historic steam ship “Shieldhall” (1,792 g.r.t)

The Price

The cost to take part in this exciting new training venture is just £30.00 for adults or £15 for accompanying under 18s. Prices include VAT at 20%.

NB: We believe that this event is not suitable for anyone under 12.

New Forest National Park - Coronavirus updates

The New Forest National Park
From: 03 Jul '20 07:00am -
To: 31 Aug '20 05:00pm

We are asking people to respect and care for the New Forest and its communities at this critical time.

Our priority is to keep people and the Forest safe and so we are working with partners to lift the restrictions carefully and in a measured way. As the Prime Minister has said, the new rules are only going to work if everyone acts responsibly and uses common sense. In a National Park context that means that when out in the Forest everyone must continue to respect and observe the social distancing rules.

Our partners are opening a number of their car parks and this will be kept under review (see Forestry England and New Forest District Council’s websites). But, in line with Government restrictions, our local attractions, pubs, campsites, restaurants and hotels remain closed, along with public toilets. It is also important that visitors remember that the hospitality and leisure businesses are not likely to open before July and will not be able to welcome them until then.

The Forest is also on an amber fire warning due to the recent dry weather so no barbecues are allowed and we ask that, as always, people respect the vulnerable areas that are closed to protect ground nesting birds, stick to the designated routes when cycling, keep their distance from New Forest animals and follow the countryside code.

Insight Activities - Coronavirus Update

Insight Activities New Forest
From: 03 Jul '20 08:00am -
To: 31 Aug '20 05:00pm

Coronavirus is having far reaching impacts and we appreciate you will have concerns regarding activities in close proximity to others.

As ever, the safety of our customers and staff is our main priority and we are closely monitoring the advice from Public Health England (PHE) and reviewing our strategy in these unprecedented times.

Currently, activities in an outdoor setting are considered lower risk than those in an indoor session or crowded environment.

As part of our duty of care to all visitors, we’re putting in place additional precautions to make your visit with us as safe as possible. These measures include:

• Increased anti-bacterial hand wash and ‘handwashing’ posters at our activity sites

• Increased anti-bacterial cleaning of shared equipment

• Suspension of ‘high-risk’ activities such as Archery Combat

• Amendments to our teaching style to protect staff and customers in line with social distancing recommendations

• Restricting group sizes to a maximum of 12 individuals on session at any time (Single household, 8 if mixed households from July 4th 2020)

Hand Washing Facilities:

We do not have running water at our sites. We will be providing water containers and hand soap which will allow you to wash your hands. You will be required to wash your hands upon arrival and will be encouraged to wash your hands at regular intervals throughout your session.

Equipment Cleaning:

Our equipment will be cleaned with anti-bacterial cleaner at the beginning and end of every session. The cleaner will be available for you to wipe down your piece/s of shared provided equipment such as axes, crossbows, archery bows and arrows that may be shared between your group during the session. We have suspended the use of shared ‘high risk’ equipment such as face masks for Archery Combat (see below).

Suspension of ‘High Risk’ Activities:

We have taken the decision to suspend all Archery Combat activities at this time. This activity involves all participants to wear a protective face mask. Due to the risk of cross contamination of shared face masks, we consider this to be an unacceptable level of risk to our customers. This activity cannot be run safely without face masks and will therefore be suspended until further notice. If your current booking involves this activity, we will discuss alternative activities with you.

Amendments to our Teach Style:

We will be adjusting our teaching style to allow for increased social distancing. Our staff would typically be stood in close proximity to you in order to instruct you and monitor your learning. In order to maintain a minimum distance in accordance with current social distancing advice from PHE, we will be amending our teaching style to maintain distance between staff and participants as far as possible whilst still ensuring your safety and facilitating your learning. This will involve increased demonstrations from our staff for you to follow.

Current and Future Bookings and Cancellation Policy:

These are uncertain times and these circumstances are unprecedented. For those choosing to book or proceed with their existing activity bookings with us, we will do our utmost to ensure your safety and enjoyment.

If you’ve made a booking with us and do not wish to attend due to Coronavirus concerns, we will work with you to issue gift vouchers or provide alternative dates for your activities on a case by case basis. Our standard terms and conditions still apply regarding cancellations. For bookings of 7 or less – If cancelling with 14 days or more notice then we will refund you fully, if cancelling with less than 7 days’ notice then we cannot refund, if between those times we will refund 50%. For groups of 8 or more please see our group booking terms.

If you or your group members fall into the ‘at risk’ categories, please let us know as soon as possible.

The ‘at risk’ categories are as follows:

• Over 70 years of age

• Have an existing health condition, particularly those affecting the heart or lungs

• Are pregnant

• Have a weakened immune system

• Have been contacted by your GP or healthcare team to advise that you are at high risk of getting seriously ill with Coronavirus

If you, a member of your group, or a member of your household is unwell with a fever or new, continuous cough, please contact us to inform us at the earliest available opportunity and do not attend your session. We will work with you to move your booking free of charge to a day more suitable for you (subject to availability).

The New Forest Tour – helping you and helping our environment

The New Forest Tour is a key part of our aim to encourage more people to leave their cars at home. Nearly 40,000 people explore the New Forest National Park on the New Forest Tour bus instead of by car each summer, saving several thousand private car miles.

The Tour stops at local cycle hire centres within the Forest. With each Tour able to carry up to four bikes, it gives access to the area’s quiet country lanes and 100 miles of waymarked cycle tracks.

The Tour is operated by morebus in partnership with the New Forest National Park Authority and is sponsored by local businesses.

The New Forest National Park
From: 17 Jul '20 07:30pm -

Cliff As If and the Golden Shadows is an authentic tribute to the music of Cliff Richard and the Shadows.

Songs performed are from the late 50’s to the mid 60’s, sometimes known as the golden period. All music is performed fully live (no backing tracks) by experienced and passionate performers using authentic equipment and instruments to recreate the early British rock ‘n’ roll sound. Multiple costume changes all add to the show.

They cover the full spectrum of Cliff and the Shadows music in the period ranging from the early rock ‘n’ roll hits ‘Move It’ and ‘Dynamite’, pop classics ‘Do You Wanna Dance’ and ‘Livin’ Doll’, movie hits ‘Summer Holiday’, ‘Dancing Shoes’, ‘The Young Ones’, and not forgetting some of the classic Shadows instrumental hit tunes such as ‘Apache’, ‘Wonderful Land’ and ‘Foot Tapper’.

Their show is filled with a variety of great music, comedy and laughter and audience participation is encouraged to join in with the fun.

You are guaranteed a great night reminiscing the wonderful musical back catalogue of Cliff Richard and the Shadows.

ULTRA 90s

Ultra 90s is the first and only show of its kind taking you back to the most exciting musical movement in decades – the dance era of the 1990’s. It’s fresh, new, unique and not to be missed!

It is easy to forget just how important and exciting dance music seemed during its heyday. These days, people write books and make films about how the mid-90s were the sole domain of guitar-fuelled Britpop. But during exactly the same period, clubs and house music were such big business that they were widely assumed to have changed British youth’s leisure habits forever.

With very few other acts daring to touch this style of music, Ultra 90s goes where so many of us want to be taken, back to our youth. School days, Uni days, clubbing, first holiday without parents… Even the more mature audiences appreciate this show with its exciting arrangements, powerful vocals and bags of energy.

Kelly has worked hard to pull off the powerful vocals from Divas such as Kelly Llorenna ‘Set You Free’, Robin S ‘Show Me Love’, Rozalla ‘Everybody’s Free’ and the show has pulled out all the stops to re-create the sounds of acts such as Snap, 2 Unlimited, Livin’ Joy and Baby D to name a few.

Ultra 90s perform the best classic chart, dance and club anthems from the 1990s. From Snap! To Faithless, from Dee-lite to Vanilla Ice, Ultra 90s guarantees to get any party buzzing. Taking you through House, Chart, Dance and Club Classics along with popular Drum and Bass tunes from the 90s – The Ultimate 90s Revival – 90s Nostalgia at it’s best.

With their unique style, repertoire and costumes, Ultra 90s are establishing themselves, as one of the UK’s must have acts for an ever-increasing list of top national and international venues. Ultra 90s is the only act of its kind – they cover all your favourite tunes from the 1990s utilising live soulful male and female vocals live keyboards and drums along with cutting edge sequencing and contemporary sampling with a fully integrated light show including lasers, strobe effects and video projection.

Blitz weekend

Royal Armouries Fort Nelson
From: 25 Jul '20 10:00am -
To: 26 Jul '20 05:00pm

Our 2020 programme of events focuses on the 1940s, reflecting life at Fort Nelson and the local area during the Second World War.

Come and find out how the Fort played its part in defending the south coast and how ordinary families did their bit for King and country.

The naval dockyard at Portsmouth was a key target for the German bombers during the air raids of 1940-41.

Discover your local history and how Fort Nelson protected the port and played its part in supplying the anti-aircraft gun emplacements up and down the coast.

The Fort will be packed with military vehicles, costumed characters and living history displays. There will also be talks, tours and live gun-firings.

The Second World War collection at Fort Nelson

The Fort was an Equipment Ammunition Magazine (EAM) throughout the war. The ammunition stored at the Fort was used in anti-aircraft batteries in the Portsmouth area, including the heavy anti-aircraft battery at nearby Monument Farm. The Fort is one of only ten EAMs to survive from the period.

The Royal Armouries’ extensive collection of artillery and historic cannon features several key British and German Second World War guns.

The Slapstick Picnic: The Importance of Being Earnest

The New Forest National Park
From: 25 Jul '20 06:00pm -
To: 25 Jul '20 08:00pm

The Slapstick Picnic would like to cordially invite you to its inaugural summer tea party, where marvellous feats of performance and culinary capers await. Over tea and cucumber sandwiches, we ask that you prepare to witness the impossible - the entirety of Oscar Wilde’s classic play of manners, affairs and handbags being performed by just two rather dashing entertainers.

As we are expecting a rather voluminous crowd in the outdoors, we do request that you bear your own seats, picnic blankets and filled hampers to the proceedings, and wear attire suitable for the meteorological conditions. It shall be an extraordinary family gathering, and we should not consider it complete without your presence.

Yours in anticipation,

The Slapstick Picnic

Outdoor theatre at Furzey Gardens is back with this hilarious adaptation of Oscar Wilde's classic play brought to you by the producers of The Handlebards.

Wednesday Tours - 5 August

Winchester Cathedral
From: 05 Aug '20 01:30pm -
To: 05 Aug '20 02:30pm

1.30pm Curious and Mysterious

Mystifying Cathedral puzzles or secrets, ancient and modern, will be revealed on this tour. The tour covers mysteries spanning some 700 years, often obscured by the mists of time. A range of delights are featured, such as moving tombs, an unofficial high profile burial, First World War personal benevolence with world changing results, disasters at sea and “what’s in a name”.

1.30pm Face The Music

Face the music includes background musical history and examines aspects of music with in the Cathedral. There are three types of visual clues: firstly, images in stone, wood, glass and embroidery reflecting 'heavenly harmony'; secondly memorials and graffiti referring to specific musical personalities; and thirdly, places and objects with musical functions such as organ or the Treasury.

Tours are free upon admission to the Cathedral but tickets must be booked through the Box Office. Available soon.

SHOWADDYWADDY

One of the finest rock & roll bands of the 1970s, Showaddywaddy also proved to be one of the most successful and enduring. The group entered and won television's "New Faces” talent show in 1974. Their many hits include, "When”, "I Wonder Why”, "Pretty Little Angel Eyes”, "A Little Bit of Soap”, "Hey Rock And Roll”, "Rock 'n' Roll Lady”, as well as several covers that include Eddie Cochran’s "Three Steps to Heaven”, Buddy Holly's "Heartbeat”, Sam Cooke's "Chain Gang”, interspersed with Showaddywaddy's own note and stylistically perfect originals. "Under the Moon of Love” gave the group their first British number 1 hit in 1976. They continued racking up further hits into the early '80s, even presiding over (and outliving) a whole new generation of rock & roll revival acts!

Winchester Cathedral
From: 15 Aug '20 10:30am -
To: 15 Aug '20 11:30am

Jane Austen died in Winchester in 1817, in rented rooms in College Street. She was buried in the north aisle of the Cathedral, probably arranged by her brother Henry who had been ordained shortly before her death. This tour offers visitors an intimate and often amusing insight into her life and connections with the Cathedral.

Tours are free upon admission to the Cathedral but tickets must be booked through the Box Office. Available soon.

2020 marks the 400th anniversary of The Mayflower and Speedwell leaving Southampton, bound for the New World. Chris Helme (The Seahorses)

The New Forest National Park
From: 15 Aug '20 07:30pm -
To: 15 Aug '20 09:30pm

Rising to fame in the 1990s as frontman of indie band The Seahorses singer-songwriter Chris Helme is now producing acclaimed folk-infused tracks as a solo artist, including with a new album due for release early 2020.

His enviable back catalogue includes Britpop classics such as ‘Love is the Law’ and ‘Blinded by the Sun’ from his time with John Squires’ post-Stone Roses band, The Seahorses. But beyond these well-loved indie hits, Helme has matured into a songwriter of regard for noir-tinged folk gems blistering with emotion.

Previous album, ‘The Rookery’ – produced by Sam Forrest (Nine Black Alps, Sewage Farm) – drew critical praise on release, with Uncut describing it as, “echoing the fragility of Gram Parsons, while flirting with the rustic side of Neil Young” and his latest work is set for a similar reception.

Long-awaited, his forthcoming album builds on this tone. With a number of ‘70s folk and song writing touch points across his works – Tim Buckley, Van Morrison, and Jackson Browne – it is the melody and imagination as much as the intricate guitar interplay and orchestration, which leads to lush, blossoming climaxes to hold audiences spellbound. Lyrically Helme has a knack for mixing light and dark, and for poetic description which remains relatable to resonate deeply, his matured vocal uncovering new feeling in whichever track he turns his attention to.

From rousing sing-a-longs of Britpop classics to underrated indie-folk gems, Chris Helme is among the finest singer-songwriters on the circuit today, and the release of long-awaited new material should only confirm his reputation and give audiences fresh favourites to enjoy alongside his indie classics.

ALVIN is ELVIS

About Alvin:

Although it sounded like a zoo burning down, the very first time that I sang "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" and "Teddy Bear" at California Cliffs Holiday Park in Great Yarmouth, I knew I wanted to go into show business and for Christmas 1972 , my parents bought me my first guitar.

I formed my first band "Capacity Crowd" in 1974. Due to musical indifferencies, Capacity Crowd split in 1981, with the band wanting to take a more musical route and me, well, I wanted to take more of a cabaret step forward, hence later that year the formation of "The Itsy Bitsy Band", a comedy show band, pictured here in 1985.

For 9 years, the "The Itsy Bitsy Band" toured all over the world, performing in hotels, holiday centres and also to HM Forces. As time went by, with the continual demand and requests for my "Elvis" sector of the show, it became apparent that this would be my next step forward, so in 1990... "Alvin, the ultimate Elvis tribute" was born.

“Alvin - the ultimate Elvis tribute" is great fun to do and having been an avid Elvis fan since the age of 12, it is a great honour for me to get to play my hero at least 3 or 4 times a week.

RU40

Playing all the classic hits from “Red Red Wine” to “Rat In The Kitchen”, from “Food For Thought” to “One In Ten” and beyond! RU40 have headlined in major venues and festivals across the South, entertaining reggae fans and ensuring they sing along to “Cherry O”, “Homely Girl”,” Here I am Baby” “Kingston Town” and many more of UB40’s string of hits. In a very successful career, UB40 had over 50 UK charting singles and sold over 70 million worldwide. They had two No.1’s in the USA (Red Red Wine, Can’t Help Falling in Love) and toured the world. It takes a special group of musicians to authentically re-create the distinctive UB40 sound and the members of RU40 have many years of experience playing reggae and many other styles. The roots of RU40 go back as far as UB40 itself to 1979 when Danny Smith, Roy Brown and Martin Brisland formed Dub’allup – a very successful band that played original reggae and dub music. The initial band lasted till 1987 still reforming and playing at times over the years. At the turn of the new millennium it was decided to use their long experience of playing reggae music to play the UB40 songbook. RU40 has built a deserved reputation as an excting live band in its own right with charismatic lead singer Danny ensuring audiences dance and sing along to their favourite tunes. It is no exaggeration to say the Danny sounds more like Ali Campbell than the man himself! The RU40 line up comprises Danny Smith (guitar and vox); Roy Brown (bass and vox); Tim Smart (drums); Martin Brisland (keys); Andy Powles (keys, guitar and vox); Bogdan Dudzik (sax) and Julian Caesar (percussion and vox).

SHAKATAK

Shakatak have enjoyed a level of success and career longevity rarely paralleled in contemporary music – but then Shakatak is a particularly unusual group. Because of the nature of their music, their fan base is one that is far reaching while always retaining an ‘underground element’. This paradox sees the band, who are known primarily as serious jazz/funk musicians, enjoying both high ‘cult’ status and instant recognition as a household name.

10.30am Green Men

The term “Green Men” was only brought into use in 1939, but their existence goes back many years and actually predates Christianity. They are a carver’s device, rarely found in glass or in illuminated manuscripts and they were particularly popular in the 14th century. There are over 70 examples in the Cathedral although some are difficult to spot, and on the tour we shall look at several different types of Green Men, including one for which Winchester is rightly famous.

1.30pm Dynamic Deans

Winchester Cathedral Deans – innovators, game changers, courageous, financial wizards, inspirational, driven: Dynamic Men. Unsung heroes throughout the ages.

The tour focuses on some whose works and state-of-the-art changes had a major impact on our cathedral, and on their relations with Winchester people; not always smooth!

Tours are free upon admission to the Cathedral but tickets must be booked through the Box Office. Available soon.

Hidden Places… Higher Spaces… From the Crypt to the Nave ... Our Cathedral's Wartime Legacy

On this tour we will visit three areas of the Cathedral and show you how our Cathedral was at the heart of every conflict in its history. We will learn what was happening there when wars took place, how we reacted, and how we remember our dead.

We will visit the ancient Crypt, the longest medieval nave in Europe and go up into the roof space with its 18 miles of wooden beams. What secrets do they hold? What wartime stories can they tell? What legacy have they left to us?

You will go away refreshed, invigorated and with new enthusiasm for a city whose Cathedral embodies the best of times, the worst of times ...a beacon to mankind.

Please note this tour includes steep steps up into the roof space.

Tours are free upon admission to the Cathedral but tickets must be booked through the Box Office. Available soon.

Halloween Steam Up

Bursledon Brickworks Museum
From: 25 Oct '20 11:00am -
To: 25 Oct '20 04:00pm

The whole outside display area(s) will again be bulging with steam exhibits including resident and visiting full size traction engines, scaled miniature engines, stationary power plants, fairground organs etc. right down to table top steam model displays. The very popular traction engine trailer rides will run all day and it is hoped that the tractor/trailer rides ‘trialled’ at the October open day will also be run, having proved so popular.

A chance to immerse yourself in a Victorian engineering setting for the day, and to watch the grand parade of machines ‘chuff and hiss’ their way past you as they wend their way slowly around the site!

Activities with a ghostly theme for children of all ages.

The museum will be in steam and both our large steam engines will be working away. The miniature trains will be running and inside there is the museum itself, activities for children, craft stalls and live music.

1.30pm Jane Austen: Her life and times

Jane Austen died in Winchester in 1817, in rented rooms in College Street. She was buried in the north aisle of the Cathedral, probably arranged by her brother Henry who had been ordained shortly before her death. This tour offers visitors an intimate and often amusing insight into her life and connections with the Cathedral.

Tours are free upon admission to the Cathedral but tickets must be booked through the Box Office. Available soon.
