From: 28 Jul '18 10:00am -
To: 29 Jan '20 04:30pm

As a centre we are aim is to help the community we serve in anyway possible. Management and retailers have recently undertaken an amazing awareness training session by a Dementia Friends Champion to help us understand some of the challenges faced by people who are living with dementia, autism or other sensory issues whilst shopping with us.

With this in mind we have introduced Sensory Sundays every last Sunday in each month.

These changes  we have introduced such as requesting the stores reduce the volume of their music and security/cleaning staff to be available to assist wherever possible. We really hope that this will help make a difference and be more inclusive. Very much like to involve our community as a focus group, to feedback any of the issues they find which makes shopping a challenge. If you would like to be involved in this please contact us for more information.

This will be every Sunday throughout the year!

Leonardo da Vinci: A Life in Drawing

Southampton City Art Gallery
From: 01 Feb '19 10:00am -
To: 06 May '19 03:00pm

This year sees the five hundredth anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci, one of the greatest artists and scientists the world has known. To mark this anniversary, Royal Collection Trust has collaborated with twelve museums and galleries to stage simultaneous exhibitions of Leonardo’s drawings across the United Kingdom, in an initiative designed to give the widest-ever UK audience the opportunity to see the work of this extraordinary artist.

Leonardo was perhaps unique in the range of his achievements, and drawing lay at the heart of his creativity. He drew to prepare his artistic projects, to record the world around him, to pursue his scientific speculations, and to make visible the workings of his imagination.

This display will feature twelve drawings which reflect the full range of Leonardo’s practice including anatomy, botany, engineering, and cartography.

This exhibition will be accompanied by a series of special events including talks, tours and art workshops. Visit southamptoncityartgallery.com to see the full events program.

Greg Gilbert

Southampton City Art Gallery
From: 01 Feb '19 10:00am -
To: 06 May '19 03:00pm

Following on from Greg Gilbert’s solo exhibition, Through Sand, in 2015 this display shows the evolution of the artists’ work from miniature, photorealistic biro studies drawn from photographs to equally intricate but surreal imaginings.

In 2016 Gilbert was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer which triggered this major shift in his practice. This exhibition will feature a body of work, Convalescence, which was created in a great outpouring both in hospital and at home. Although all of the images arrived very naturally, they put the artist back in touch with primary influences of interwar artist such as Stanley Spencer, Paul Nash and David Jones, who processed their traumatic experiences through surreal narratives. Also on display will be a selection of the artists’ poetry, a selection of which has been chosen by Carol Ann Duffy to be one of her Laureates’ Choice publications. These poems further explore his illness but in a less abstract way creating a full, sensory diary of his experience.

To accompany this presentation of his own works Gilbert will be selecting several drawings from Southampton’s permanent collection, featuring artists who have informed and resonate with his own practice.

Festival of Light is back on the Esplanade.

Are you ready to #letlightinWQ?

Join us for a stunning showcase of brand new immersive and interactive light displays on the Esplanade, in front of the Old City Walls.

We can reveal the new light displays include the following:

Planetarium is inspired by the ancient concept of Planetariums (dome-shaped theatres) and viewers will be taken on a journey through a marvellous universe as lights depict planets, moonlight, beautiful starry skies and a sensational eclipse.

Sunrise a bespoke commissioned piece for Westquay, visualises an abstract sunrise made of 4000 points of light on strands that will radiate from the centre to the edge.

Wave consists of some 500 individual suspended orbs, brought to life through light and sound to create a walkthrough immersive experience reminiscent of the ocean.

Control No Control invites guests to use their hands and body to act on its sound and graphics, creating a unique experience for each and every individual.

Lightbattle located along the vaults of a pathway, consists of two sets of five bicycles facing each other, where the public will use pedal power to project beams of light to the opposite side in an attempt to defeat their opponents.

We cannot wait for you to see Westquay's 2019 Festival Of Light. You do not want to miss it.

Visit this half term with cameras at the ready! Share your pictures on social media using the hashtag #letlightinWQ @Westquay to be in with the chance to win one of two Instax Mini Instant Camera's!

Free fun for all the family is guaranteed!

Tour and Tea- Green Men

Winchester Cathedral
From: 02 Mar '19 10:30am -
To: 02 Mar '19 11:30am

The term “Green Men” was only brought into use in 1939, but their existence goes back many years and actually predates Christianity. They are a carver’s device, rarely found in glass or in illuminated manuscripts and they were particularly popular in the 14th century. There are over 70 examples in the Cathedral although some are difficult to spot, and on the tour we shall look at several different types of Green Men, including one for which Winchester is rightly famous.

After the tour enjoy a coffee or hot drink with a homemade cake in the Refectory and discuss and ask questions about what you have seen and experienced in the Cathedral.

Ticket information

Tickets: £15.00 (plus £1 per ticket booking fee, capped at £5) Includes tea or coffee and cake to be taken in the Cathedral Refectory after the tour, available online or by phone on 01962 857 275. Tour last approx 1 hour. Tours must be booked in advance and have limited spaces available.

Ash Wednesday at Winchester Cathedral

Winchester Cathedral
From: 06 Mar '19 08:00am -
To: 06 Mar '19 06:30pm

Today in the Cathedral, you will find places to pray and people who will pray with you. You can make a formal or informal confession to a priest, enjoy creative prayer stations and receive ashes on your forehead informally (outside) or formally in the services at 8.00am, 12noon and 5.30pm.

This is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, the season that leads to Easter. We welcome you to this special day at Winchester Cathedral.

Know that God loves you and longs for you to turn to him. There is amazing grave on offer: God's gift to you of his unconditional and boundless love.

On Ash Wednesday we remember that we are simply human, we all make mistakes and we can ask for forgiveness. We can let go of resentment and dear and grow into new life and new love.

On this day we ask, and receive, forgiveness for all that separates us from God and from one another.

'Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return. Turn away from sin and be faithful to Christ.'

Please make sure of this day and take part in what is offered in and around the Cathedral, as you wish.

May God bless you on this holy day.

From: 09 Mar '19 07:00pm -
To: 09 Mar '19 10:30pm

MEET STEPH JEAVONS

Join us on the evening of Saturday 9th March to meet adventurer Steph Jeavons.

Steph Jeavons is an author, journalist and adventurer who, in April 2018, completed a solo around-the-world (RTW) trip that took her to all 7 continents - a world first. The journey lasted a few days short of four years, during which she logged 53 countries and over 74,000 miles on a 250cc Honda – more than anyone who’s come before.

Born in Canada, she’s lived most of her life in Wales and considers it home. Even before learning to ride a motorcycle at 21, Steph was unconventional, leading a successful school ‘uprising’ to allow girls to wear trousers in the winter. Prior to starting her RTW adventure, Steph worked conventional jobs in accounting and Human Resources; and ran an off-road motorcycle school before leading desert motorcycle tours in Morocco. Unwilling to stay still for very long, she is currently planning to lead the first-ever all female motorcyclist trip to Everest Base camp in 2019—barely a year after completing her RTW.

As if riding RTW isn’t enough of a challenge, Steph made regular blog and vlog posts on her web site (www.onestephbeyond.com) and authored her first book, “Embrace the Cow: How to Ride Around the World on a Budget” in her ‘spare time’. She also got caught in a Himalayan landslide on the highest ‘motorable’ road in the world; rode Rhonda (her Honda) on Antarctica; visited, in turn, the hottest, driest, wettest, and coldest places on the planet; and graciously turned down six marriage proposals. She is currently writing her second book, this one about the RTW adventure.

INFORMATION & TIMINGS

The evening will commence at 7:30 pm in the Lecture Theatre of the National Motor Museum’s Collections Centre and finish at around 10.00 pm. A pay bar will be available in the Collections Centre for the purchase of beers, wines and soft drinks.

Please note The National Motor Museum will not be open at this event.

I’m Not Running is an explosive new play by David Hare, premiering at the National Theatre and broadcast live to cinemas.

Pauline Gibson has spent her life as a doctor, the inspiring leader of a local health campaign. When she crosses paths with her old boyfriend, a stalwart loyalist in Labour Party politics, she’s faced with an agonising decision.

What’s involved in sacrificing your private life and your piece of mind for something more than a single issue? Does she dare?

Hare was recently described by The Washington Post as ‘the premiere political dramatist writing in English’. His other work includes Pravda and Skylight, broadcast by National Theatre Live in 2014.

This talk reflects on how best we can read the Bible, focussing especially the gospels and letters of the New Testament, but opening up some wider questions. How important is the Bible? Inspired by Our Cathedral

Winchester Cathedral
From: 16 Mar '19 08:00am -
To: 31 Mar '19 05:00pm

“Inspired by our Cathedral” is an exhibition of work produced by the GCSE students of Kings’ School.

The students have spent the past two terms creating work for an exhibition of Art inspired by Winchester Cathedral. They visited the Cathedral over the summer and throughout the Autumn term to gather photographs and sketches to inspire them in their work. They had tours with the guides and learned about its history, its architecture, its spiritual ethos and all that it contains.

The students have explored a rich and varied range of media, techniques and processes in their aim to create a thought-provoking exhibition that will challenge the audience and engage them with their surroundings. The work includes Art, Photography, Textiles, Sculpture and Mixed Media, based on a brief that incorporates the themes of “Hidden Figures”, “Colour”, Pattern and Texture”, “Architecture” and “Illumination”.
