Penguin Cove is likely to be one of your first stops on your visit! Ever the favourites - join our feathered friends at 3.30pm for feeding time and see their streamlined bodies in action as they zoom around their watery world. Lying below a rocky outcrop is a large deep pool with a pebbly beach and stream, and it’s here that you’ll find our noisy little Humboldt penguins bobbing up and down in the water; diving and generally having a great time. Venture into our underground cave and you can see them “fly” through the water with their perfectly adapted, streamlined bodies. Find out more in our daily talk and feed!

KINGS & SCRIBES: THE BIRTH OF A NATION

Winchester Cathedral
From: 01 Oct '19 09:00am -
To: 01 Jan '21 05:00pm
Be one of the first to explore Kings and Scribes: The Birth of a Nation, a stunning new exhibition at Winchester Cathedral.
Winchester Cathedral is a living monument to the heritage of England and is one of the most historically significant buildings in Britain. From the time of Alfred the Great until after the Norman Conquest, Winchester was England’s capital and the Cathedral was its royal chapel. Much of England’s early history was based here and twelve English kings are believed to be buried here – meaning that Winchester can lay claim to being the first Royal Mausoleum. The opening of Kings and Scribes: The Birth of a Nation marks the culmination of an ambitious seven-year project to unlock the Cathedral’s stories and treasures by inspiring active engagement in the interpretation and exploration of our heritage.

Thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and other generous supporters, a spectacular three-level exhibition space in the South Transept will take visitors on a journey through over 1,000 years of history, whilst offering awe-inspiring views of the Cathedral.

There are four exciting galleries to explore:

A SCRIBE’S TALE
The Winchester Bible is the largest and finest of all surviving 12th-century English bibles. Hear the incredible story of how and why the Winchester Bible was made, in the Cathedral where it was created, and admire its exquisite illuminated initials and elaborate decorative schemes.

THE BIRTH OF A NATION
Winchester played a unique role in shaping early English history and Old Minster, the Anglo-Saxon Cathedral, lay at the centre of its foundation. Join us on an intriguing journey of discovery as we unearth the secrets hidden within the Cathedral’s mortuary chests, meet influential Anglo-Saxon kings in the city from which they ruled and discover the role of Winchester’s Anglo-Saxon and Norman Cathedrals in the birth of a nation.

DECODING THE STONES
Unlock the mysteries of Winchester Cathedral, a building which has been created, destroyed and remade over centuries of struggle and Civil War. Decoding the Stones will tell the story of the Cathedral itself, linking modern restoration works and contemporary craftspeople with their medieval predecessors.

THE MEZZANINE
Explore the realities of monastic life at Winchester Cathedral Priory with a fascinating rolling programme of displays from the Cathedral archives. The Mezzanine also provides access to the remarkable 17th-century Morley Library and its outstanding collection of books, which have remained in their current location for over 400 years.

15 January 2020 - Dissecting dots: exploring the diversity of alien worlds

Dr Ben Burningham

Abstract: The last decade has brought an explosion in the number of planets beyond the solar system that are known to science, revealing an incredible diversity of alien worlds and planetary systems which continue to surprise and intrigue scientists. Dr Ben Burningham (University of Hertfordshire) will take you on a tour of this planetary zoo, and bring you up to date on the hunt for oases of habitability in the harshness of the cosmos.

The Lecturer: Dr Ben Burningham is a Senior Research Fellow and Director of Outreach and Public Engagement at the University of Hertfordshire’s Centre for Astrophysics Research. His research focuses on remote sensing the atmospheres of giant exoplanets and brown dwarfs. He earned his PhD from the University of Exeter in 2006. He has worked at the University of Hertfordshire since 2007, with periods of secondment to the National Observatory of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro (2012 - 2014), and NASA Ames Research Center, California (2014 - 2016).

12 February 2020 - Communicating with both Astronauts on the Moon and Rovers on Mars directly from the UK

Matthew Cosby

Abstract: The next decade will see humans returning to the Moon and more robotic landers and rovers on both the lunar surface as well as Mars. This increased traffic, as well as the need to service the existing assets around the solar system, will put pressure on the NASA and European Space Agency (ESA) antenna infrastructure. Goonhilly, in Cornwall, is working alongside the ESA to convert a 32m diameter dish into a Deep Space Network compatible antenna. This asset will sit alongside ESA’s established network and support the expanding institutional and commercial science and exploration missions. The project is funded by the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership, which is the public body responsible for growth and development of the Cornish region, given the project’s potential to rejuvenate and attract highly skilled jobs into the area. The project timescales are such that the system can be used in support of Cubesat missions delivered by the Artemis-1 mission, that will also deliver Orion to Lunar Orbit for the start of return humans to the surface of the Moon. This talk describes the technical challenges of the project and how the completed system will allow communications to the Lunar and Martian surface from UK.

The Lecturer: Matthew is Chief Technology Officer at Goonhilly Earth Station ltd in Cornwall, where he works to expanding capabilities at the site including the deep space communications, orbit tracking, and development of new communication systems. He was previously Chief Communications Engineer for the QinetiQ Farnborough’s space group, where he was responsible for technical leadership of the planetary communications team, including the UHF transceiver on ESA's ExoMars project. He read Physics with Space Science and Technology at the University of Leicester and has worked in the space industry for over 20 years. Matthew is also the UK Space Agency representative on the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (http://ccsds.org ) and the UK delegate for Interagency Operations Advisory Group (http://ioag.org). Both organisations bring together the world space agencies to create the policies and infrastructure to ensure their space systems all work together.

18 March 2020 - The Colour and the Shape: Understanding galaxy evolution through simple observations of the Local Universe.

Dr. Nicolas Bonne

Abstract: There are an estimated 2 trillion galaxies in the observable universe. Each galaxy is unique, so understanding why a galaxy looks the way that it does, and understanding the internal workings of any given galaxy can seem like a daunting task. Galaxies in the local universe have provided astronomers with some of the most detailed galaxy studies to date, due to the simple fact that they are close enough to observe in great detail, and can be morphologically classified. As well as visual imagery, I will provide physical props and tactile representations of data for audience members to interact with, as well as sonifications of phenomena, to demonstrate how a few simple observations of nearby galaxy properties like general galaxy shape and galaxy optical colour can help us start to unravel these mysteries. I will discuss what we can learn about the past, present and future of these complex systems, but why assuming too much about what we can see can be misleading.

The Lecturer: Dr Nic Bonne is a blind, Australian astrophysicist and outreach officer based at the University of Portsmouth whose research area is galaxy evolution. Nic is currently project lead for The Tactile Universe - a public engagement project to make current astrophysics research accessible to people with visual impairments. Nic also works as an advisor and consultant on a number of other national and international VI accessible astronomy projects.

22 April 2020 - The human body in long term space flight on the ISS

Paul Muckelt

Abstract: Ever since we have turned our attentions to space, and particularly once the decision was made to start human space flight, we have known that living in microgravity will have effects upon the human body. this lecture will cover the human body’s adaptations to life in space; some of the challenges that are faced, such as increased body temperature, changes to the cardiovascular system; and then focus on effects of microgravity on the musculoskeletal system. Featuring an ongoing study being conducted by University of Southampton, Charité University (Berlin) in partnership with the European space agency, NASA and the UK Space Agency. Changes in muscle characteristics are being monitored through the novel use of a device known as the MyotonPRO (measuring mechanical properties) and ultrasound imaging (measuring muscle size) across the three phases of an ISS mission. This will allow us to have a greater understanding of the effects of microgravity on muscles. The eventual aim is to aid the design of astronauts’ personalised daily exercise routines more specifically whilst on the ISS and post flight, to optimise muscle function and enable closer monitoring on future long-distance space missions.

The Lecturer: Paul is a Research Fellow and PhD student in the School of Health Sciences at the University of Southampton. He is a researcher on the Muscle Tone in Space (Myotones) project, working with Prof Maria Stokes and Dr Martin Warner in Southampton and a team in Germany, led by Prof Dieter Blottner. This study monitors astronauts’ muscular health before, during, and after their mission to the International Space Station. Paul took part in the first ever ultrasound measurements in space, guided remotely from Earth, and has now lead several further sessions with the astronauts on the ISS. Paul’s research interests include: the biomechanics of movement and physiology of motor control; understanding the implementation and uses of Movement Screening tools; the importance of physical activity and the barriers to and facilitators of participation and adherence; prevention and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries; the use of Myoton technology and ultrasound imaging in understanding muscle characteristics, in health and disorders, in various populations. Paul is funded by the Science & Technology Facilities Council/UK Space Agency for his role in the Myotones project and the Centre for Sport, Exercise and Osteoarthritis Research Versus Arthritis for his work on movement quality and injury prevention.

20 May 2020 - Plasma: Barriers for Space Exploration and Gifts for Human from the Universe

Dr Min Kwan Kim

Abstract: Plasma, which is an ionised gas, is the most common state of matters in the universe. On the space exploration missions such as planetary entry, plasma brings us technical challenges by causing harsh environment and interrupting communications, knows as ‘radio blackout’. However, the special type of plasmas, which is known as ‘non-thermal plasma’, brings us the innovative solution for urgent global problems on public health and environment. Dr Minkwan Kim (University of Southampton) will show you novel aerospace technologies to overcome the challenges of planetary entry caused by plasmas, and explore the next generation of medicine and environment remediation technologies using plasmas.

The Lecturer: Dr Minkwan Kim is a Lecture in Astronautics as the University of Southampton. His research focuses on plasma and weakly ionised gas dynamics for space and biomedical applications. He is currently a member of the Plasmadynamics and Laser (PDL) Technical Committee (TC) in the AIAA. He earned his PhD from the University of Michigan in 2009. He has worked at the German Aerospace Centre (DLR, 2010 - 2012) and University of Adelaide, Australia (2012 - 2016). In particular, he is one of the frontiers in a plasma communication which is using MHD (Magneto Hydrodynamic) effect to solve the radio blackout problem during planetary entry/re-entry.

We offer archery lessons and courses in the New Forest, Hampshire and in Tolpuddle, Dorset.

Our archery range is progressive and accommodates 14 people shooting on the line at any 1 time. We are very keen on keeping people fully active and shooting for the whole session time, no having to share your go. 22 Miles of Sea exhibition

The New Forest National Park
From: 22 Feb '20 10:00am -
To: 08 Mar '20 03:00pm

This pop-up exhibition captures the moving, entertaining and often profound tales of people and places from the Waterside stretch of the New Forest.

A collaborative project between Ringwood based Forest Forge Theatre Company and the New Forest Heritage Centre in Lyndhurst, has set out on a mission to preserve the history and heritage of the Waterside area of the New Forest.

In Autumn 2019, working in partnership with the New Forest Heritage Centre, Forest Forge Theatre Company invited residents in four communities to share photographs and stories expressing the Waterside area’s fascinating and diverse history, working with playwright David Lane to bring their memories and experiences together.

Forest Forge Theatre CEO/Creative Producer, Sharon Lawless said: 'The waterside area has been recognised as having the lowest engagement rate with the arts in the New Forest, it is also one of most deprived areas of the forest. This project is so interesting as it's a collaboration between a theatre company, museum, and a playwright. Far from a photography project, we've used the photos as prompts for people to share their stories and celebrate the heritage of their communities, stories that otherwise would be lost.

'Things have changed so quickly that the connection between the Waterside area and the New Forest itself has become lost. The Waterside is personally my favourite part of the forest and it's been a joy to celebrate it with this project. After the exhibition in Lyndhurst we will be taking what we've found back to its communities, and are hoping to develop these stories into a play later in 2020.'

The project was made possible with funding from the New Forest National Park Authority, National Lottery Heritage Fund, Arts Council England, and the New Forest District Council. It also received support from Folio New Forest, Hythe Waterside Heritage, Hythe & Waterside Rotary, and Revital Hythe.

Hamlet

The New Forest National Park
From: 27 Feb '20 07:30pm -
To: 28 Feb '20 09:30pm

At the top of her political career, Hamlet’s mother is found dead at the Presidential Palace, leaving her Sister and Vice President, Claudia, to take over the reins.

It seems, however, this isn’t the only thing Claudia inherits, and Hamlet is finding the marriage of Claudia to his Father Gertrude so soon after the funeral, a little hard to bear.

As relevant as it has ever been, ‘Hamlet’ is not only one of Shakespeare’s greatest plays, but also the most fascinatingly problematical tragedy in world literature. This gripping and exuberant drama of revenge is rich in contrasts and conflicts: Its violence alternates with introspection, its melancholy with humour, and its subtlety with spectacle. Hamlet, depicted as a complex, divided, introspective character, with reflections on death, morality, mental health and the very status of being, makes ‘Hamlet’ very much a play for today.

Kick In The Head are proud to present a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the loss of the great, unremittingly genteel, comedienne and monologist, Joyce Grenfell.

Choice Grenfell is a wonderful tribute featuring some of the best of Joyce’s hilarious songs and monologues from Stately as a Galleon and School Nativity Play to A Terrible Worrier and First Flight. Joyce is our guide for a delightful delve into some of her most endearing characters, ably accompanied by her trusted pianist William Blezard.

We are delighted that the family of William Blezard have allowed us access to previously unpublished rehearsal recordings and personal letters from Joyce allowing a unique insight into the queen of comediennes.

As Joyce would have said “We request the pleasure of your company”.

With Suzanne Walters as Joyce Grenfell and Andrew D Brewis as William Blezard.

Additional material written by Simon Downing.

Sketches by Joyce Grenfell are presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH LTD, a Concord Theatricals Company.

“tremendously funny and totally on the ball” The Telegraph

Barb Jungr: Bob, Brel & Me

The New Forest National Park
From: 07 Mar '20 07:30pm -
To: 07 Mar '20 09:30pm

Barb Jungr’s reputation as “one of the world’s great cabaret singers” (Time Out New York) may have gone to her head, as she will now only sing songs by writers whose names start with the letter B.

But this means she can return to two colossi of popular song, whose writing has helped define her whole career. A good plan, because she is “one of the best interpreters of Jacques Brel and Bob Dylan anywhere on this angst-ridden planet today” (Village Voice).

In this brand new collection for 2019, Barb will turn her acclaimed ability at reinvention and reinterpretation to exploring her relationship with a set of Dylan and Brel songs she has never tackled before on stage or on disc, all in original arrangements. They include ‘Les Cœurs tendres’ (The tender hearts), ‘Voir un ami pleurer’ (To see a friend break down and cry), ‘Mr Tambourine Man’ and ‘This Wheel’s on Fire’. Placed alongside them will be some of Barb’s own songs, written with a number of wonderful collaborators.

“it’s as if Edith Piaf and Nick Cave had a love-child, who was adopted by Carmen McRae” (Glam Adelaide)

Any performance of an existing song is a conversation between the writer and the singer, and the conversation between Bob, Brel and Barb is a particularly stimulating one, not least because of the way in which gender informs all of their work. Things could get heated. Uh-oh.

Barb can’t wait to scale the mountainous heights of the work of these two extraordinary writers, navigating its complex emotional terrain and traversing its ravines of love, sadness and anger. Why not slip on your crampons and join her for the climb? Bring your own Kendal mint cake.

”the alchemist among jazz singers… electrifying… the top rank of jazz singers… she is truly a marvel, who should not be missed” (Telegraph)

Winter 1968 and showbiz legend Judy Garland arrives in Swinging London to perform a five-week sold-out run at The Talk of the Town.

It is 30 years since she shot to global stardom in The Wizard of Oz, but if her voice has weakened, its dramatic intensity has only grown. As she prepares for the show, battles with management, charms musicians and reminisces with friends and adoring fans, her wit and warmth shine through.

Even her dreams of love seem undimmed as she embarks on a whirlwind romance with Mickey Deans, her soon-to-be fifth husband. Featuring some of her best-known songs, the film celebrates the voice, the capacity for love, and the sheer pizzazz of “the world’s greatest entertainer.”

Queen – Real Magic

The New Forest National Park
From: 12 Mar '20 08:00pm -
To: 12 Mar '20 10:00pm

Hey, they’re gonna get you too. . . the UK’s favourite Queen concert show Real Magic hits town on its nationwide Another One Bites the Dust 40th Anniversary tour.

In 1980 Queen were at the top of their game – triumphing worldwide on stadium tours to promote their million-selling album. . . The Game. A record-breaking 300,000 fans packed into one Beunos Aires concert alone!
This all-action production perfectly recreates both these stadium spectaculars and the more intimate triumphs that preceded them.
Driven on by a band brimming over with superb musicianship, which flawlessly complements a performance that captures Freddie’s on-stage antics and irrepressible personality, a score of non-stop hits beckons:
We Will Rock You, Bohemian Rhapsody, We are the Champions, I Want to Break Free, I Want it All, Killer Queen, Somebody to Love, Radio Ga Ga, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, One Vision, Tie Your Mother Down, You’re My Best Friend, The Show Must Go On and, of course, Another One Bites the Dust are packed into an evening of right royal entertainment.
Ladies and gentlemen, please be upstanding for Freddie, Brian, Roger and John as another packed out performance by the ultimate Queen concert show bites the dust!

John Hitchens: Aspects of Landscape

Southampton City Art Gallery
From: 13 Mar '20 10:00am -
To: 27 Jun '20 05:00pm

Aspects of Landscape showcases work by John Hitchens, created over a period of more than five decades.

The exhibition will trace the artists’ journey from early descriptive paintings to increasingly abstract ways of interpreting landscape, reducing its forms to lines, circles and patterns. In his recent paintings the artist has developed his own visual language which sets it apart from conventional abstract painting.

This development was greatly influenced by a period spent photographing landscape elements from the air, which enabled Hitchens to gain an awareness of the land as a two-dimensional composition. This is the first time such a complete overview of his work will be seen in one exhibition, including work that has never been shown in public before.

John Hitchens is one of four generations of artists in his family, both his grandfather Alfred Hitchens and his father Ivon Hitchens were also painters of landscapes. His son, Simon is a sculptor. A number of Ivon Hitchens’ paintings are held in the Gallery’s art collection.

Saturday Morning Movie : Toy Story 4

The New Forest National Park
From: 14 Mar '20 10:00am -
To: 14 Mar '20 12:00pm

Woody (voice of Tom Hanks) has always been confident about his place in the world, and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie.

So when Bonnie’s beloved new craft-project-turned-toy, Forky (voice of Tony Hale), declares himself as “trash” and not a toy, Woody takes it upon himself to show Forky why he should embrace being a toy.

But when Bonnie takes the whole gang on her family’s road trip excursion, Woody ends up on an unexpected detour that includes a reunion with his long-lost friend Bo Peep (voice of Annie Potts). After years of being on her own, Bo’s adventurous spirit and life on the road belie her delicate porcelain exterior. As Woody and Bo realize they’re worlds apart when it comes to life as a toy, they soon come to find that’s the least of their worries.

A St Patricks Day Celebration with ‘The Flying Toads’

The New Forest National Park
From: 17 Mar '20 07:30pm -
To: 17 Mar '20 09:30pm

A highly entertaining concert of Irish music and song, ranging from high-energy jigs and reels to heart-warming songs and haunting ballads – guaranteed to keep your toes tapping and the perfect way to celebrate St Patrick’s Day!

‘The Flying Toads’ are:

Val: Vocals, concertina, tenor banjo

Keith: Tenor banjo, bouzouki, vocals

Erik: Uilleann pipes, flute, whistle, vocals

Brian: Fiddle, cittern, mandolin, vocals

The name ‘The Flying Toads’ came about as a spoonerism of the Irish hornpipe ‘The Flowing Tide’. Being a four piece band and each playing several traditional instruments, the ‘Toads’ focus on arrangements that explore the best blending of sounds and dynamics, as well as choosing Celtic tunes and songs that are exciting to listen to, sing along with or dance to.

The annunciation: A Pilgrim's Quest

Winchester Cathedral
From: 18 Mar '20 11:00am -
To: 18 Mar '20 04:00pm

Wessex Learning Centre

The week before the Feast of the Annunciation, Lay Canon Mark Byford leads a special study day to discover the meaning of Luke’s gospel story, featuring the encounter between angel Gabriel and Mary (Luke Ch 1 vs 26-38).

Come to hear why a painting hanging in the National Gallery, on loan from Winchester College, first led Mark to embark on a pilgrimage about the significance of the annunciation story; why, today, the feast day has lost its prominence; and learn about some of the greatest works of art, all inspired by the short biblical passage. Mark will share the views of people he has interviewed along the way, including senior clerics, world-renowned theologians, art historians and artists.

Ticket information

Tickets for this three-part study day cost £18 (including a buffet lunch) and will be available from the Cathedral Box Office 01962 857 275 and via the Cathedral website from January.

The Man Who Left is Not the Man Who Came Home

The New Forest National Park
From: 18 Mar '20 07:30pm -
To: 18 Mar '20 09:30pm

‘We started it – pancakes, breakfast the next morning, wedding, holidays, lie-ins on a Sunday, two beautiful girls – and when you get back, we’ll finish it. I love you.’

Alongside Chloe’s future hopes come imminent challenges. Because being married to the military means facing deployment. Behind closed doors there’s tenderness and humour, but as the day of Ashley’s departure comes ever closer, anxiety and confrontations multiply.

‘I will not let my tears rust your suit of armour.’

The Man Who Left is Not the Man Who Came Home is the product of over a hundred one-to-one interviews with soldiers and their wives – where secrets, regrets and experiences have been shared for the first time. A story of resilience, of hope, of change – and what it’s like when the man you love is going to war and might not come back

Kevin Dyer’s new play, performed by Stephanie Greer and Sam C Wilson with Sam Trussler, a military wife, will be followed by an open conversation about the themes of the play, and the country we live in.

Knight & Spiers

The New Forest National Park
From: 19 Mar '20 07:30pm -
To: 19 Mar '20 09:30pm

On a summer’s day in 2016, the organisers of FolkEast Festival masterminded one of the most intriguing and exciting collaborations on today’s folk scene.

Peter Knight, legendary violinist and ex-member of folk-rock band Steeleye Span was paired with leading melodeon player and ex-Bellowhead member, John Spiers, for a special one-off performance which left audiences in awe. With no space to be found in the marquee, people stood five deep in the pouring rain in order to witness the bringing together of two of the most genuinely gifted musicians in their respective fields.

With a standing ovation and roars for more, and much to the delight of folk fans everywhere, Knight and Spiers decided not to leave things there.

The pairing of violin and melodeon is not a new one, but in the hands of Knight and Spiers, Improvisation and invention meet the listener at every turn. Together they have created a musical document that resonates with history, but also something that should inspire future generations of musicians to engage with Britain’s folk dancing heritage, and the beautiful, mysterious tunes that can be found within that heritage.

These uniquely gifted musicians make a sublime pairing, and create a live performance to be remembered for a long time.

“Knight’s playing is a revelation. A world away from folky fiddling, it’s fully informed by the classical style, all long sweeping bow strokes and eloquent legato. Yet he never loses the essential folk heart of the music, tracing a graceful line of his own making”

“Contemplative, accomplished…an evening to relish for some time to come”

“(The melodeon) is a curious kind of versatile, but Spiers knows exactly how to capture and manipulate its range, adding maximum colour and savour to the music”

Shazia Mirza – Coconut

The New Forest National Park
From: 03 Apr '20 07:30pm -
To: 03 Apr '20 09:30pm

Following the success of her last solo shows, ‘With Love From St. Tropez’, a riot of Brexit, buquas and butt-plugs through the lens of the periodic table, and ‘The Kardashians Made Me Do It’, a searing and urgent exploration of life, love and Jihadi brides, Shazia is now taking on the burning issues of our time.

What’s going on? Why is everyone fighting? Why does everyone hate each other? Who the hell is Alexa? And why are there no women left with real eyebrows? Women are in fashion now but the eyebrows come and go? And why do all the right-wing papers keep calling her for answers every time there is a paedophile with the same skin colour as her? Can we really educate people? Can we drag anyone forward against their will?

Recently seen back to absolute basics in Channel 4’s Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls, taking a speedy turn (2.07 seconds to be exact) in BBC2’s Top Gear and temporarily enjoying the high life in Channel 4’s Travel Man – 48 Hours In… Côte d’Azur, Shazia has also guested on ITV’s Jonathan Ross and Loose Women, BBC1’s The One Show, and is a regular panellist on Channel 5’s The Wright Stuff. Other TV credits include Have I Got News For You (BBC), F*** Off, I’m a Hairy Woman (BBC), Celebrities v Child Genius’ Christmas Special 2018 (Channel 4), Celebs In Solitary (Channel 5), NBC’s Last Comic Standing, Beautiful People (BBC2), The World Stands Up (Paramount Comedy) and The Late Late Show (RTE). She has also appeared on BBC Radio 2’s Graham Norton and Steve Wright, Radio 4’s The Now Show and Saturday Live, and her Pause For Thoughts can often been heard on Radio 2’s Vanessa Feltz Show.

In 2008 she was listed in The Observer as one of the 50 funniest acts in British comedy, won ‘Columnist of the Year’ at the prestigious PPA Awards for her fortnightly column in The New Statesman and won The GG2 Young Achiever of the Year Award. She has performed all over the world, selling out performances from Singapore to Kosovo, and regularly writes for various publications, including The Guardian, The Financial Times and New Internationalist.

SUPERSIZED!

Marwell Zoo
From: 04 Apr '20 12:00am -
To: 02 Sep '20 12:00am

April 2020 will see an exciting new addition at Marwell Zoo… the world exclusive toy brick event: SUPERSIZED!

The brand-new immersive adventure has been created with more than two million toy bricks and will include some of the deadliest and most deceptive creatures in the world, all blown up to enormous proportions. Follow the trail to discover more about each species and break the myth of these often-misunderstood creatures.

The larger than life brick adventure features up to 40 astonishing models of real-life creatures with an explosion of colour and size. From sneaky predators such as the fearless honey badger and venomous blue-ringed octopus, to the aptly named assassin bug, all creatures have been chosen for their colourful appearance in nature, unusual natural abilities and because they can be magnified to an eye-popping size. Guests will also be able to play games, build their own models and create toy brick graffiti.

The creative geniuses at BRICKLIVE say it will take their team of professional builders more than 10,000 hours to create the exclusive event.

The event will be on display at the zoo from 4 April to 2 September 2020. SUPERSIZED! will be included with general admission. Ticket prices cost from £18 per child (3-16 years) and £22 per adult, which include an optional donation. Children aged 2 and under go free and every penny spent at Marwell helps the charity support the zoo and its conservation projects in the UK and overseas.

Date with Nature

The New Forest National Park
From: 05 Apr '20 10:30am -
To: 04 Sep '20 03:30pm

Come and experience ‘A Date With Nature’ at the New Forest Reptile Centre.

Using the latest hi-tech gadgets you can look right into the tree-top nests of the New Forest Goshawk and watch their every move – from eggs hatching to food arriving and chicks leaving.

Want to find out more? Visit the New Forest Reptile Centre near Lyndhurst, where staff and volunteers are on hand to explain more about the bird’s behaviour and answer any questions as they have the live webcam on show to visitors.

You can also see unique wildlife viewed in ‘pods’ at the Centre, such as the reptiles and amphibians native to the New Forest. Discover the rare wildlife living in our National Park and learn how you can help protect our most vulnerable species.

Drop in for Wild Wednesdays during school holidays from 10.30am – 3.30pm, with reptile and bird quizzes, trails and activities.

A Date with Nature in the New Forest runs daily from Easter to the end of the summer holidays, 10.30am to 4pm. Entry to the Reptile Centre is free although donations for parking are welcome. The project is a partnership between us, the RSPB, Forestry Commission and Carnyx Wild.

The Slightly Annoying Elephant

  • Based on the book written by David Walliams and illustrated by Tony Ross.
  • Age recommendation: 3 +
  • The hilarious story by David Walliams and Tony Ross brought to life through puppetry.

What’s big, blue, bossy, and turns up uninvited? A slightly annoying elephant, of course! One day Sam gets a very big surprise as a tired, hungry, antique-loving, cycling enthusiast elephant turns up on his doorstep. Adopting an elephant at the zoo turned out to be a lot more than he bargained for as he didn’t realise the elephant would actually come to live with him

This play is based on the original book The Slightly Annoying Elephant written by David Walliams and illustrated by Tony Ross.

Grow up wild in the New Forest!

Playing outdoors in a natural environment, building dens, jumping in puddles, clambering over fallen logs and making mud pies is what wild play is all about! Opportunities for free play within nature offer countless benefits to children and often are the source of standout childhood memories.

Part of the joy of wild play is its simplicity, there is no need for any complicated equipment, just you, your family and some good old wellie boots! Leave the toys and computers at home, get your imagination in gear and start exploring.

Whatever the season or weather, there is an outdoor adventure waiting for you so why not put on your sun cream…or waterproofs and head outside.

Dates for your diary

Throughout the year we run a series of wild play events across the Forest. Upcoming events are:

Spring Wild Play Day – Wed 8 April 2020. Drop in between 10am – 3pm at Hurst Spit, Milford-on-Sea.

The Wild play project

We’ve worked with local communities to create three wild play areas within the New Forest National Park at Holbury, Ashurst and Sway.

Holbury Manor, Holbury Drove, Holbury (on the corner with Lime Kiln Lane)

Stanford Rise Green, Sway

Ashurst recreation ground, Whartons Lane, Ashurst

If you can’t make it to the wild play areas, use our seasonal wild play downloads with your family which are packed with tips to help you have more fun in the outdoors.

Wild play is one of 21 projects within the £4.4 million, National Lottery Heritage Fund Our Past, Our Future landscape partnership scheme.

Wild play toolkit now available

If you or someone that you know is interested in creating a wild play area then our new wild play toolkit is for you.

Designed for parish councils, groups, organisations and individuals who are interested in developing a wild play space. It is packed with ideas for resources and activities as well as all the different things that you will need to consider in your wild play journey.
