KINGS & SCRIBES: THE BIRTH OF A NATION

Winchester Cathedral
From: 01 Oct '19 09:00am -
To: 31 Jan '25 05:00pm
THIS EXHIBITION IS CURRENTLY CLOSED.

Be one of the first to explore Kings and Scribes: The Birth of a Nation, a stunning new exhibition at Winchester Cathedral.
Winchester Cathedral is a living monument to the heritage of England and is one of the most historically significant buildings in Britain. From the time of Alfred the Great until after the Norman Conquest, Winchester was England’s capital and the Cathedral was its royal chapel. Much of England’s early history was based here and twelve English kings are believed to be buried here – meaning that Winchester can lay claim to being the first Royal Mausoleum. The opening of Kings and Scribes: The Birth of a Nation marks the culmination of an ambitious seven-year project to unlock the Cathedral’s stories and treasures by inspiring active engagement in the interpretation and exploration of our heritage.

Thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and other generous supporters, a spectacular three-level exhibition space in the South Transept will take visitors on a journey through over 1,000 years of history, whilst offering awe-inspiring views of the Cathedral.

There are four exciting galleries to explore:

A SCRIBE’S TALE
The Winchester Bible is the largest and finest of all surviving 12th-century English bibles. Hear the incredible story of how and why the Winchester Bible was made, in the Cathedral where it was created, and admire its exquisite illuminated initials and elaborate decorative schemes.

THE BIRTH OF A NATION
Winchester played a unique role in shaping early English history and Old Minster, the Anglo-Saxon Cathedral, lay at the centre of its foundation. Join us on an intriguing journey of discovery as we unearth the secrets hidden within the Cathedral’s mortuary chests, meet influential Anglo-Saxon kings in the city from which they ruled and discover the role of Winchester’s Anglo-Saxon and Norman Cathedrals in the birth of a nation.

DECODING THE STONES
Unlock the mysteries of Winchester Cathedral, a building which has been created, destroyed and remade over centuries of struggle and Civil War. Decoding the Stones will tell the story of the Cathedral itself, linking modern restoration works and contemporary craftspeople with their medieval predecessors.

THE MEZZANINE
Explore the realities of monastic life at Winchester Cathedral Priory with a fascinating rolling programme of displays from the Cathedral archives. The Mezzanine also provides access to the remarkable 17th-century Morley Library and its outstanding collection of books, which have remained in their current location for over 400 years.

Sylva: the Tree in British Art History from Gainsborough to The Arborealists

Southampton City Art Gallery
From: 13 Apr '21 07:00pm -
To: 13 Apr '21 08:30pm

Online Talk with Tim Craven

This talk will examine the tree as a major subject in British Art history, from the early days of the native school in the 18th century, through the high Romantic Movement and the Pre-Raphaelite landscape painters of the 19th century to the Neo-Romantics of the 1940s and the Brotherhood of Ruralists of the 1970s. It will consider how the tree was employed as a motif for stylistic development and its contemporary role as a symbol of our fragile, natural environment for The Arborealists. While all ticket buyers will receive the same level of service, your generosity would be a great help in making sure these events are affordable for all. Whilst Steamship Shieldhall has had to cancel her 2020 sailing programme due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are pleased to be in a position to release dates for 2021 sailings. In keeping Shieldhall COVID compliant – and working towards the industry ‘Good to Go’ marque during our closed season – we will initially be offering a limited number of tickets for each of our 2021 sailings. There is an expectation that we will be able to resume selling to Shieldhall’s capacity (currently 220 persons) at some point in the future, though this will be based on Government advice. Once the reduced capacity levels are reached, enquirers will be directed to a waiting list, and contacted when and if circumstances change. If a cruise does not go ahead, all ticket holders will be offered a full refund or the opportunity to transfer their tickets to another sailing.

Join us as Shieldhall cruises down Southampton Water towards the Solent. Learn about Southampton’s links with the SS Titanic, including the New York incident that nearly resulted in a collision in Southampton Water between the Titanic and the SS New York. We will welcome guest speakers on board, and will identify the Titanic berth. On our return to berth get close to the departing cruise ships Celebrity Silhouette; Grand Princess and Iona, always the cue to sound our whistle and play the ‘Shieldhall Organ’!

As part of your cruise, see the impressive engine room with its original steam engines at work and the bridge, with its traditional instruments and gleaming brasswork; admire the ship’s steam-assisted steering gear (similar to that used on Titanic); talk to the Captain and our volunteer crew; listen to the informed commentary on the sights and sounds of Southampton Water and The Solent; pass close to the great ocean liners and container ships; walk the teak decks; relax in the Saloon with our wide range of refreshments including tea/coffee; real ale; a range of Titanic bottled beers; wine and hot and cold food, available on all trips.

Children will have fun with our interactive Shieldhall Passport, collecting stickers from various stations on board!

Shieldhall will anchor for a short period, for service and ashes scattering at sea to take place. The Reverend Dennis Mould will be on board and can conduct a short service and scattering if wished.

American Independence Day Music Cruise with the Soulcatchers

As part of your cruise, see the impressive engine room with its original steam engines at work and the bridge, with its traditional instruments and gleaming brasswork; admire the ship’s steam-assisted steering gear (similar to that used on Titanic); talk to the Captain and our volunteer crew; pass close to the great ocean liners and container ships; walk the teak decks; relax in the Saloon with our wide range of refreshments including tea/coffee; a range of Titanic bottled beers; wine and hot and cold food, available on all trips. On our return to berth, enjoy witnessing the spectacle of the Anthem of the Seas departing the port of Southampton – always the chance to sound our whistle and play the ‘Shieldhall Organ’!

Children will have fun with our interactive Shieldhall Log Book, collecting stickers from various stations on board!

Cruise to the Nab Tower – Shieldhall’s 65th birthday revisited!

Shieldhall was 65 years young in 2020, but had to postpone her birthday celebrations! Now join the Shieldhall crew and help celebrate Shieldhall’s 66th birthday in style as we journey out to the Eastern Solent and the near-mythical Nab Tower! We’ll be recreating the journey Shieldhall carried out for Southern Water during the mid-1980s, when she visited the nearby ‘dumping grounds’. On our return to berth enjoy witnessing the spectacle of cruise ships Braemar, Britannia, Celebrity Silhouette and Iona departing the port of Southampton – always the chance to sound our whistle and play the ‘Shieldhall Organ’!

Children will have fun with our interactive Shieldhall Log Book, collecting stickers from various stations on board.
