Treasure boxes Fun activities for pre-schoolers

Royal Armouries Fort Nelson
From: 01 Nov '18 10:00am -
To: 30 Apr '19 05:00pm

Our range of treasure boxes have been developed with the needs of little learners in mind.

Each treasure box contains a selection of toys, stories and suggested activities designed to provide hands-on fun for inquisitive pre-schoolers (0-4 years). These boxes are designed to be used independently by parents/carers with their children.

There are 3 different treasure boxes to choose from:

Florence’s travelling trunk

This treasure box will help you explore the Fort’s hospital gallery. Find out what hospitals were like before Florence Nightingale made her reforms and how they changed afterwards. Play at being doctors and patients in our replica beds. This box contains medical themed books, toys and activities. Lots of fun for our next generation of doctors and nurses.

Scales and tales

The Art of Artillery gallery is home to the amazing dragon gun and the terrific tiger mortar. The scales and tales treasure box contains dragon and tiger themed books, soft toys and musical instruments to help you and your children bring history to life.

Sergeant Dobson’s kitchen

This treasure box will help you explore the Fort’s authentic garrison kitchen. Find out what the soldiers would have eaten in Victorian times, then have a go at making your own feast. This box contains food themed books, toys and activities – loads of clean cookery fun for budding chefs!

Price: Museum admission and use of the treasure boxes is free.

Availability and booking

The boxes are available every day. Simply request a treasure box at the visitor centre on arrival at the museum. A member of staff will provide you with a map, which will lead you to the relevant box, plus a code to open the lock.

Treasure boxes are issued on a first come, first served basis and are subject to availability. During busy periods there may be a time limit on usage.

Make your family’s Christmas magical and join us at Marwell for our Enchanted Christmas. Watch out for some exciting updates for this event.

“Having participated in a large number of Christmas events at various places with the grandchildren I can honestly say that the Marwell Christmas event surpassed any of the others. The group sizes were just right and all the children seemed to enjoy the story time and plate painting. Everything was arranged beautifully. The gift was excellent quality too. This was 1.5 hours well spent and we will definitely go again. Plenty of time after for a meal in the restaurant and visit to the animals. Well worth the money.” ~ SueN280 on Trip Advisor

Greeted by the sights and sounds of Christmas, wander beneath unique tree canopies drenched in seasonal colour.

A FESTIVE OUTDOOR WALK FOR ALL THE FAMILY...

TUNNEL OF LIGHT

Perhaps leave a special Christmas Wish at the Wishing Tree before you continue through the Tunnel of Light festooned by a canopy of over 100,000 twinkling pea-lights.

Santa and the Elves Christmas Experience

Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium
From: 01 Dec '18 10:30am -

Santa and the Elves are back at Winchester Science Centre and this time they’re joined by Jack and the beanstalk! A Christmas experience like no other with live science show inspired by the classic children’s tale, an elf-led activity, Christmas planetarium show and chance to meet Santa. Spark your children's imagination and curiosity this Christmas at this fun-filled family day out!

What's included?

Santa and the Elves Christmas Experience includes two main events, an hour-long Santa and science experience (live science show, elf-led children's activity and chance to meet Santa) and a 30-minute Christmas planetarium show.

Science Show

Inspired by, and featuring, Jack and the Beanstalk - this 25-minute live science show investigates different forces to see how they can help Jack reach the very top of his beanstalk.

Elf-led workshop and chance to meet Santa

In this 25-minute Jack and the Beanstalk-themed activity we invite children to grow their own Elf grass - to decorate and plant up their own mini paper plant pot to take home. Santa will be present throughout the activity allowing children to meet him first as a group before being invited to say hello in person. Children will receive a wrapped gift from Santa.

Reindeer Round-up in Space planetarium show

The elves have lost Santa’s reindeer and they need your help to find them! This fun presenter-led 30-minute planetarium show will take the audience on a journey through the Solar System in search of Rudolf and his fellow furry friends to help save Christmas. ‘A truly fantastic day out. My wife and I were bowled over by the amazing spring colours of rhododendrons and azaleas and there was literally colour everywhere. There are beautiful areas to walk through as well as places to sit. We took a picnic in the hope of being able to sit by one of the ponds and were not disappointed – the reflections were as spectacular as the real thing! The next thing we want to do is return in the autumn to see the colours change as it must be beautiful’

CATHEDRAL CAROL CONCERT

Winchester Cathedral
From: 14 Dec '18 07:00pm -
To: 21 Dec '18 09:00pm

Entitled Star Shine: an evening with the stars you are welcome to an evening of music, laughter and delight at Winchester Cathedral as the bright stars of the Cathedral Choir, boys, girls and lay clerks sing music for Christmas.

A highlight of the evening will be a tribute to HM Queen Elizabeth, the great star of our nation, with the premiere of ‘Queen Elizabeth's Winchester Carol’, composed by Roderick Williams and commissioned by the Friends of Winchester Cathedral.

This year the choir is supported by stars of the opera house, in Paulo Ferreira and Clare Rutter, singing well-loved repertoire both classical and contemporary. Dirk Maggs, producer and director of Radio 4’s The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, will remind us the comedy of Christmas, and the evening with be hosted by BBC South Today’s, Sally Taylor.

Throughout the concert, readings and reflections following contemporary Christmas themes will be interspersed with delightful performances of traditional and light-hearted carols sung by the Cathedral Choir.

Tickets (£20 - £40) are on sale now. Every Friday till 21st

Send your letter to Father Christmas train on our Postal Express!

Discover the magic of winter at Exbury Gardens this year. Our traditional-style celebration hopes to bring families together with carol signing, festive crafts and exclusive access to our magical gardens during Winter.

Not forgetting the very special Postal Express train that is exclusive to our miniature steam railway! Children are invited to write their wishlist in our Railway Shed using glitter, cotton wool and a whole-host of crafty bits. Families will then hop on-board the Postal Express and take a our festive route through the gardens with fairy lights, tinsel and a little sprinkling of magic. See if you can spot Father Christmas through the trees organising his elves and reindeer! At the end of the journey, children can then post their letter directly to the North Pole with the help of Head Elf Milseltoe and some festive singing.

We welcome all families and can accomodate wheelchairs on our trains. Just let us know if you need any additional assistance and we will do our best to make sure your day is enjoyable.

Mr Eddy's restaurant will be selling a selection of seasonal treats, such as:

Homemade stolen

Spicy Parsnip soup with chunky bread

Christmas cake muffins

Panko breaded Turkey in a brioche bun with cranberry, sprout slaw, fries and dressings

Gingerbread men

Lamb or Beef Scotch pie with chunky chips

Mince pies

Roasted winter vegetable and chestnut scotch pie with chunky chips

Sandwiches and baguettes with seasonal fillings

No need to book, just turn up on the day!

‘What could be better on a trip down to the New Forest than a walk in a beautiful garden, a ride on a steam train (which my grandson adored!) and a chance to see the Beaulieu river close up? A memorable day out and a gem of a place’

‘We recently had some friends from London to visit and were looking for something to entertain our young children for the day. We decided to give Exbury Gardens a try and I thought it was wonderful. We had Sunday lunch in the restaurant and the food was far superior to other local attractions so compliments to the chef. Walking through the gardens was beautiful with lots of little pathways to explore. I have lived in the Romsey area for many years and always thought Exbury was a little out of the way but it only took me 20 minutes from the motorway. We will definitely be a regular visitor from now on.’

Alan Bennett’s sharp and hilarious new play is ‘just what the doctor ordered

Daily Telegraph

Filmed live at London’s Bridge Theatre during its limited run, don’t miss this ‘rousing chorus line for the NHS’ (Observer) in your local cinema.

The Beth, an old fashioned cradle-to-grave hospital serving a town on the edge of the Pennines, is threatened with closure as part of an efficiency drive. A documentary crew, eager to capture its fight for survival, follows the daily struggle to find beds on the Dusty Springfield Geriatric Ward, and the triumphs of the old people’s choir.

Alan Bennett’s celebrated plays include The History Boys, The Lady in the Van and The Madness of George III, all of which were also seen on film.

Allelujah! is his tenth collaboration with award-winning director Nicholas Hytner.

December “Lights Up” Morning at the Mary Rose

History becomes a heartbeat closer

The lighting within the Mary Rose Museum is designed to create a stunning atmosphere and display, as well as helping protect the delicate collection of artefacts within the gallery showcases. Some visitors with a visual impairment or those with other medical and physical conditions can find our lighting levels to be a challenge in fully appreciating the museum.

As an initiative to engage further with all our visitors, the lights in the museum will be at a higher level on the mornings of the 4th Friday of the Month, from 10am to 12 noon. This will give a spectacular display of the ship. As always our wonderful team of volunteers and staff will be on hand to guide you through this experience.

At this higher lighting level, some visual displays may not be so effective, so guests wishing to enjoy the full immersive experience and displays would be advised to visit us after 12 noon on these specific days.

Applying Missile Defence Technology to Solve the Near Earth Asteroid Problem - Alexander Godfrey (Lockheed Martin)

THE LECTURE

The Chelyabinsk meteor in 2013 caused approximately £10 million worth of damage and led to 1500 people seeking medical attention. The object remained undetected prior to its atmospheric entry and a larger meteor would be catastrophic if it happened over a city.

Before panic sets in; some comfort can be taken that systems already exist, or are being developed, that could deal with this threat. With the technology potentially at our fingertips, this presentation primarily explores whether or not there is a strong enough business case for the inhabitants of Earth to pay for such a system.

THE SPEAKER

Mr Godfrey is a Senior Systems Engineer working at Lockheed Martin UK – Ampthill, technically leading the pursuit and execution of new business civil space programmes. Most notably he has worked on ESA Space Rider, ESA Mars Sample Return Orbiter, Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators as well as several classified exoatmospheric programmes.

Spuds, sledges and sovereignty: Preserving historic sites in the British Antarctic Territories

Gilbert White & The Oates Collections
From: 24 Jan '19 06:30pm -
To: 24 Jan '19 08:00pm

What happened in Antarctica after the heroic age of Scott and Shackleton? Why and how are we preserving the legacy of exploration and science in the Antarctic Peninsula? This talk focuses on Base Y at Horseshoe Island. Sophie Rowe was part of a small field team which studied the site extensively in 2017, as preparation for major conservation work. She will present the story of the hut and its occupants, and how it fits into the wider history of the Antarctic Peninsula, right up to the present day.

Sophie trained as a conservator at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London. She specialised in the conservation of organic artefacts while working at the British Museum. In early 2017 she spent a field season on Horseshoe Island in Antarctica cataloguing artefacts in the historic 1950s base there.

Missing is a deliciously warped journey into the depths of the human psyche. Follow Lily, a woman whose soul appears to be decaying. She is very successful in life and love but something is missing...

Amit Lahav’s production invites the audience to experience a series of extraordinary images, jaw-dropping choreography and a tantalizing multilingual vocal landscape. The shadows of Lily’s past invite her, along with each audience member, to consider how far they have strayed from who they are and where they come from.

Missing is a truly universal theatrical experience. Since 2012 it has toured to Russia, China, Georgia, Malta, Colombia, Mexico and across the UK, including the re-opening of Battersea Arts Centre in September 2018.

The War That Never Was

Royal Armouries Fort Nelson
From: 08 Feb '19 06:30pm -
To: 09 Feb '19 09:00pm

Fort Nelson was built during the Victorian era as part of a ring of defences around the Royal Naval Dockyard in Portsmouth.

Step back in time and find out if the Fort was up to the task in a war that never happened.

The story so far…

Buoyed by its victory against Prussia in 1871, the French superpower is set on adding Great Britain to its empire. French troops have landed and are marching on Portsmouth. The home of the British navy must be defended at all costs.

Fort Nelson’s underground garrison is waiting nervously for news of the French invasion; fending off the first exploratory attacks, and discovering that not everyone within the walls of the Victorian fort are as trustworthy as they seem…

Adventurers are advised that this is a guided promenade performance through the underground tunnels and chambers of the Fort. The ground is often uneven and it gets cold down there, so please wear suitable footwear and clothing. There will be live gun-firings during the performance; ear-protectors will be available. This event is suitable for ages 12+. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Dates: Friday 8 and Saturday 9 February 2019

Performances at 6.30pm, 7.30pm & 8.30pm each evening

Gun of the month -The Howitzer

Royal Armouries Fort Nelson
From: 10 Feb '19 10:00am -
To: 10 Feb '19 04:00pm

Fort Nelson is also one of the few places where you can experience live firings of historic artillery pieces.

The 25-pounder gun/howitzer is one of Britain’s most iconic artillery weapons and was used effectively throughout World War II when its six-man crew would have travelled with it from the beaches of Normandy to the outskirts of Berlin. Most artillerymen during the period, including famous names such as Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe, would have used one of these guns during its 30-years of service.

The Howitzer will be fired by uniformed detachments from the Portsdown Artillery Volunteers, who will be available to talk about the guns and the firing drills they perform.

This is a free event and suitable for all ages.

Gun firing times

11.30am

2pm

3pm

Ear defenders will be available.

Ambassador Theatre Group presents

Abigail's Party

Monday 11th February - Saturday 16th February at NST Campus

Jodie Prenger & Vicky Binns lead the cast in this groundbreaking comedy classic!

Beverly and husband Laurence are throwing a party for their newlywed neighbours, Tony and Angela. Joining them is highly strung Susan who’s been banished from the party of her teenage daughter Abigail. Welcome to 1970’s suburbia and its heady mix of free-flowing cocktails, classic disco and cheese and pineapple sticks. As tensions rise and tempers flare the sheen of respectability is torn away by the warring couples with hilarious and potentially disastrous consequences.

Mike Leigh’s iconic Abigail’s Party is one of Britain’s most celebrated comedies; beloved by audiences, it thrills and delights in equal measure. It’s not to be missed.

Big Computers and Little Galaxies - David John Williamson

The Lecture

What exactly does a “supercomputer” look like these days? How do astronomers use them, and what kind of results do they get? Using results from dwarf galaxies simulations performed at Southampton University, David will answer these questions and explain what they tell us about these vulnerable little galaxies, and the local universe in general.

The Speaker

Born in New Zealand, David Williamson completed an MSc in Condensed Matter Physics at Victoria University of Wellington before pursuing his true passion of astronomy and undertaking a PhD in Computational Astrophysics at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Canada. After three years as a postdoctoral researcher at Université Laval in Québec City, he has been working as a postdoctoral researcher at Southampton University since 2016, developing simulations of active galactic nuclei and dwarf galaxies.

I’m Not Running is an explosive new play by David Hare, premiering at the National Theatre and broadcast live to cinemas.

Pauline Gibson has spent her life as a doctor, the inspiring leader of a local health campaign. When she crosses paths with her old boyfriend, a stalwart loyalist in Labour Party politics, she’s faced with an agonising decision.

What’s involved in sacrificing your private life and your piece of mind for something more than a single issue? Does she dare?

Hare was recently described by The Washington Post as ‘the premiere political dramatist writing in English’. His other work includes Pravda and Skylight, broadcast by National Theatre Live in 2014.

Professor Alister McGrath, Andreas Idreos Professor of Science and Religion, University of Oxford

This talk reflects on how best we can read the Bible, focussing especially the gospels and letters of the New Testament, but opening up some wider questions. How important is the Bible? How can it help us shape our thinking and living? And how can reading this text help us reflect on God and ourselves during this period of Lent?

Alan Johnson is one of the most popular politicians of recent times and now a best-selling author, his memoirs selling half a million copies to date.

Inspired by his latest book, In My Life, in this highly entertaining show Alan tells his personal story with the help of some of the music that has soundtracked his life, from growing up as an orphan in a West London slum in the 50s to becoming a postman before rising through the Labour Party ranks to hold several cabinet posts, including Home Secretary.

Saturday 16th March 7:30pm at NST City

Recommended age 16+

Star of Death in Paradise ,Father Ted, and My Hero (BBC), continues to tour his acclaimed stand-up shows worldwide. Because he loves it. And it’s a compulsion. And the world is a funny place.

In an age of raging populism, MeToo, identity politics, the end of truth, the collapsing middle ground, peak avocado and £15 Gin and Tonics, and terrified of being on the wrong side of history, and desperate to prove that his gender, race, age and class don’t necessarily define him, Ardal is forced to saddle his high horse again and ride fearlessly into the culture wars (with a white hankie in his pocket just in case), comedy as ever being the best emergency response mechanism to extreme events there is.

NT Live: The Tragedy of King Richard the Second

Nuffield Southampton Theatres
From: 17 Mar '19 03:00pm -
To: 17 Mar '19 05:30pm

This is a encore screening

Simon Russell Beale plays William Shakespeare’s Richard II, broadcast live from the stage of the Almeida Theatre in London to cinemas.

This visceral new production about the limits of power will be directed by Joe Hill-Gibbins, whose previous plays include Little Revolution at the Almeida and Absolute Hell at the National Theatre.

Richard II, King of England, is irresponsible, foolish and vain. His weak leadership sends his kingdom into disarray and his court into uproar. Seeing no other option but to seize power, the ambitious Bolingbroke challenges the throne and the king’s divine right to rule.

Simon Russell Beale returns to National Theatre Live screens following broadcasts of Timon of Athens and King Lear, and his recent role in the National Theatre’s critically acclaimed production of The Lehman Trilogy.

Shappi Khorsandi: Skittish Warrior... Confessions of a Club Comic

Sunday 17th March 7:30pm at NST Campus

Comedian, author, cultural icon and - most recently - idiot who agreed to be tortured on 'I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here!', Shappi Khorsandi is a woman of many parts.

But live comedy is where she's in her element, and now - after her spell in the jungle - she sets out for the more welcoming destination of Southampton. A brand new hour of sharp-tongued gags, cultural observation and whatever else is in her easily distracted mind this time around. As heard on Radio 4, read in two warmly-received books, and seen sleeping in a hammock.

“She has plenty to say, and says it with pointedness and potency”

The Guardian

“Has the crowd in the palm of her hand’

The List

“Makes live comedy thrilling”

Evening Standard
