Harvest Festival Discovery Day

Woodmill Outdoor Activities Centre Southampton
From: 24 Sep '17 10:00am -
To: 24 Sep '17 04:00pm

Autumn will be here soon and what better way to enjoy a day than joining us for our next Woodmill discovery day. Our Harvest Discovery day will bring together people in the local community to enjoy what we have to offer. Our discovery days occur 4 times a year and they are the chance for everyone to try different activities including: kayaking, canoeing, stand up paddle boarding, climbing, leap of faith, pond dipping, bug hunting and have a lot of fun. There will also be a BBQ, music and a bouncy castle!! To make the most of this autumnal weather we have combined our usual range of fun activities with some friends from the local community. We will have stalls of all varieties from local businesses and charities. We will also have a raffle and a small hay maze for the little ones. This event is open to the perfect opportunity to get together with families, colleagues and friends and make some great memories. Why not make a day of it and bring along a picnic blanket :) Hopefully it will be lovely warm weather!! If a child can fit in our equipment then they are able to do the activity (roughly age 4+) but if they can't, don't worry they can still do bug hunting, pond dipping or have a go on the bouncy castle!! Cost per person Archery (3 arrows) = £1 / Climbing = £3 / Leap of Faith = £3 / Vertical Challenge = £3 / Kayaking = £3 for 20 mins / Canoeing = £3 for 20 mins / Stand up Paddle boarding = £3 for 20 mins / Bouncy Castle = £1 for 10 mins / Pond dipping/bug hunting = £2 for a 30 min session / Seasonal activities ranging from £1-£2. You can pay by card or cash on the day. You can buy a discovery day challenge card if you'd like to try a range of the activities. This costs £10 for four activities. When you have completed all the activities on your card simply fill in your details and you could be in the chance of winning a year’s membership for kayaking/canoeing at Woodmill!! Booking isn’t necessary and you can buy challenge cards in advance as well as print off the consent forms beforehand to save time for more activities!! You can also use any tokens/cards that you didn't get a chance to use last time :) Consent forms will need to be completed on the day or to save time use the link below, print it off and bring it with you. If you do not have a working printer you can also collect one from the centre. If you have any queries or would like to have a stall for the day please either message Woodmill on facebook or give us a call on 02380915744.

WELCOME TO WINCHESTER HALF MARATHON

Winchester Half Marathon is a beautiful run that starts and finishes in the centre of Winchester outside the Guildhall. The Winchester Half Marathon is a very scenic route through the idyllic setting of the countryside and takes in landmarks such as St Catherine’s Hill, Winchester Cathedral and King Alfred the Great.

The route incorporates the high street, Romsey Road and Sparsholt Road to take the runners into the heart of the Winchester countryside. Towards the end of the route, runners will pass by St Catherine’s Hill, though fortunately not up the hill! The race finishes back outside the Guildhall with a picture perfect view of King Alfred. The Calling of Creatures like Us: Thinking wih Reformation Traditions about what it Means to be Human

Winchester Cathedral
From: 25 Sep '17 07:00pm -
To: 25 Sep '17 10:00pm

A series of lectures which celebrates the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. This fourth lecture is led by Prof Neil Messer and is entitled "The Calling of Creatures like Us: Thinking with Reformation Traditions about what it Means to be Human".

What does it mean to be a human being or live a human life? More particularly, what does it mean to live well as a human being? Are there particular ways of being human that fulfil what a human life is supposed to be about? Questions like these might not often be asked explicitly, but many areas of modern life – from the practice of health care to economics and politics – depend on answers to them, whether those answers are stated or just assumed

Focusing particularly on the practice and ethics of health care, this lecture will explore how the Reformation heritage, as expressed in theologians such as Karl Barth and Dietrich Bonhoeffer, can offer resources for thinking through these questions. It will thus offer a test-case of how a sixteenth-century theological movement can engage with the problems and questions of twenty-first century life.

Neil Messer is Professor of Theology at the University of Winchester, where his research and teaching are concerned in various ways with the interactions of theology, ethics, health care and the biosciences. His latest book is Theological Neuroethics: Christian Ethics Meets the Science of the Human Brain (Bloomsbury T&T Clark, Sept 2017). He is a minister of the United Reformed Church and a member of the Expert Group on Ethics of the Community of Protestant Churches in Europe (CPCE), for which he recently edited ‘Before I Formed You in the Womb…’ A Guide to the Ethics of Reproductive Medicine from the Council of the Community of Protestant Churches in Europe (CPCE, 2017).

Coinciding with the 40th anniversary of Ian Dury and the Blockheads’ seminal album ‘New Boots and Panties!!’, this gritty coming of age musical from the renowned Graeae Theatre Company rejoices in the infectious and enduring music of Ian Dury and the Blockheads.

Part gig, part play, Reasons to be Cheerful features a catalogue of the band’s hits, including the disability rights anthem ‘Spasticus Autisticus’, which was performed by the cast at the London 2012 Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony, as well as stone-cold classic songs like ‘Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick’ and ‘Reasons to be Cheerful’, brought to life by an inclusive cast of 15 actors and musicians.

Using Graeae’s signature theatrical language, all performances of Reasons to be Cheerful seamlessly include British Sign Language, audio description and creative captioning.

Luther, Paul and the Radical Power of Grace

Winchester Cathedral
From: 26 Sep '17 07:00pm -
To: 26 Sep '17 10:00pm

A series of lectures which celebrates the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. This fifth and final lecture is led by Prof John Barclay and is entitled "Luther, Paul and the Radical Power of Grace".

Did the Reformation misunderstand Paul? So many recent scholars have argued, claiming to rediscover the 'original' Paul. Here Luther's focus on Christ as the unmerited gift of God, with its radical consequences for the church, will be linked more positively to Paul's mission theology, where the incongruity of grace - its mismatch with the worth of its recipients - helped found innovative communities where ethnic boundaries were crossed and social norms recalibrated. There are therefore rich resources, in both Paul and Luther, for rethinking the radical power of grace in our contemporary cultural context.

John Barclay has been at Durham as Lightfoot Professor of Divinity since 2003, having previously been professor at the University of Glasgow. His most recent book, the first of a two-part series, is a study in Pauline theology from the perspective of his theology of grace, called Paul and the Gift (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2015), which explores the theological and social significance of the incongruity of grace in the formation of innovative communities, going beyond E P Sanders and the current antithesis between old and new perspectives on Paul. A collection of essays on Pauline Christians and Diaspora Judaism called Pauline Churches and Diaspora Jews has been republished in paperback in 2016 by Eerdmans.

Nerine Exhibition

Exbury Gardens and Steam Railway
From: 01 Oct '17 10:00am -
To: 05 Nov '17 04:30pm

From the 1st October - 5th November, enjoy a fantastic display of Nerines in our Five Arrows Gallery, grown in the glass houses on site. The exhibition is included free with standard admission into the gardens.

Lionel de Rothschild first developed and hybridised the tender greenhouse–loving Nerines at Exbury in the 1920s and ‘30s, coming up with many classic blooms. The collection was dispersed in 1974 when the best bulbs were acquired by enthusiast and plantsman extraordinaire Sir Peter Smithers for his garden at Vico Morcote in Switzerland.

In 1995 Sir Peter returned the collection to Exbury, where Nicholas de Rothschild, Lionel’s grandson, has taken up the challenge of continuing the strain. Originally found on Table Mountain overlooking Cape Town in South Africa, the jewel lilies flower in a spectrum of colours from their original oranges, scarlet and white through new purples, pinks, mauves, reds, scarlets, copper and bronzes. They scintillate in the sunshine with gold or silver crystalline flecks that make their petals sparkle.

Special Tour: Wood Glorious Wood

Winchester Cathedral
From: 25 Oct '17 10:30am -
To: 25 Oct '17 03:00pm

This tour explores the exceptional riches of the Cathedral's woodwork, ancient and modern. It considers the indispensable role of wood in the construction and preservation of the building and we discover wood furnishing and decoration as far back as the 12th century.

The highlight of this tour is a look in some detail at the 14th-century Quire stalls, described as "the most beautiful in Northern Europe", with particular emphasis on the Misericords which will all be raised and visible.

Ticket information

This tour is free however Cathedral entry fees apply. You must pre book on this tour. If not, walk ins on the day will be asked to wait until all other customers have arrived and if space is available they can then take the tour. Book at the Cathedral Box Office call 01962 857 275 or book below.
