KINGS & SCRIBES: THE BIRTH OF A NATION

Winchester Cathedral
From: 01 Oct '19 09:00am -
To: 31 Jan '25 05:00pm
THIS EXHIBITION IS CURRENTLY CLOSED.

Be one of the first to explore Kings and Scribes: The Birth of a Nation, a stunning new exhibition at Winchester Cathedral.
Winchester Cathedral is a living monument to the heritage of England and is one of the most historically significant buildings in Britain. From the time of Alfred the Great until after the Norman Conquest, Winchester was England’s capital and the Cathedral was its royal chapel. Much of England’s early history was based here and twelve English kings are believed to be buried here – meaning that Winchester can lay claim to being the first Royal Mausoleum. The opening of Kings and Scribes: The Birth of a Nation marks the culmination of an ambitious seven-year project to unlock the Cathedral’s stories and treasures by inspiring active engagement in the interpretation and exploration of our heritage.

Thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and other generous supporters, a spectacular three-level exhibition space in the South Transept will take visitors on a journey through over 1,000 years of history, whilst offering awe-inspiring views of the Cathedral.

There are four exciting galleries to explore:

A SCRIBE’S TALE
The Winchester Bible is the largest and finest of all surviving 12th-century English bibles. Hear the incredible story of how and why the Winchester Bible was made, in the Cathedral where it was created, and admire its exquisite illuminated initials and elaborate decorative schemes.

THE BIRTH OF A NATION
Winchester played a unique role in shaping early English history and Old Minster, the Anglo-Saxon Cathedral, lay at the centre of its foundation. Join us on an intriguing journey of discovery as we unearth the secrets hidden within the Cathedral’s mortuary chests, meet influential Anglo-Saxon kings in the city from which they ruled and discover the role of Winchester’s Anglo-Saxon and Norman Cathedrals in the birth of a nation.

DECODING THE STONES
Unlock the mysteries of Winchester Cathedral, a building which has been created, destroyed and remade over centuries of struggle and Civil War. Decoding the Stones will tell the story of the Cathedral itself, linking modern restoration works and contemporary craftspeople with their medieval predecessors.

THE MEZZANINE
Explore the realities of monastic life at Winchester Cathedral Priory with a fascinating rolling programme of displays from the Cathedral archives. The Mezzanine also provides access to the remarkable 17th-century Morley Library and its outstanding collection of books, which have remained in their current location for over 400 years.

From: 06 Nov '21 09:00am -
To: 30 Jun '22 10:00am

Did you know Westquay runs a regular weekly quiet hour? The centre and its retailers work together to create a quieter than normal shopping environment. The hour allows visitors young and old that find large public spaces, noise and crowds of people difficult to deal with.

We hope this offer builds on the great work that’s been achieved over the last year with a range of our community partners to continuously work towards Westquay being an accessible environment throughout the year.

Westquay's quiet hour takes place every Monday 9am - 10am.

BRICKOSAURS! Evolution

Marwell Zoo
From: 01 Apr '22 10:00am -
To: 04 Sep '22 05:00pm

Marwell Zoo will unveil a world-first event featuring an all-new collection of 55 dinosaur sculptures this Spring.

BRICKOSAURS! Evolution showcases over 20 species made using more than 2 million toy bricks and will leave you in awe as you embark on an immersive adventure through the zoo.

The interactive expedition, which is on display alongside hundreds of resident endangered and exotic animals, is sure to excite families, toy brick, and dinosaur enthusiasts alike.

Visitors will go back in time and come face to face with amazing pre-historic creatures such as the incredible seven-metre-long Spinosaurus, a nodding Heterodontosaurus, and a huge Mosasaur emerging from the water.

Enthusiasts will be able to test their knowledge along the trail with a host of fascinating dino facts and build stats at every turn.

There will be plenty of photo opportunities too, including a sit-in Carnotaurus, a giant dino egg, and the chance to get up close to nine adorable baby dinosaurs.

At the Fossil Zone, kids big and small can literally walk in their favourite dinosaurs’ footsteps on the fossil pavement, plus prepare for a few surprises!

The event has taken professional builders at the Hampshire-based workshop of Bricklive International more than 9,000 hours to complete.

The event follows the roaring success of toy brick adventure BRICKOSAURS! In 2019 and SUPERSIZED! in 2020.

BRICKOSAURS! Evolution is included with general admission to the zoo and will be on display from 1st April until 4th September 2022. Marwell offers visitors the opportunity to get up close to amazing members of the animal kingdom, from Amur tigers to towering Rothschild’s giraffes, in 140-acres of beautiful parkland.

Conservation charity Marwell Wildlife owns and operates the zoo, so every penny spent at the zoo supports amazing projects to conserve habitats and species both in Hampshire and around the world.

Be sure to follow Marwell Zoo on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for the latest updates, sneak peeks, and competitions!

Exhibition: Watching Narrowly Photography Exhibition

Gilbert White & The Oates Collections
From: 05 Apr '22 10:30am -
To: 12 Jun '22 05:00pm

When the covid-19 pandemic hit we were all forced to look at the world a little differently. With more time on our hands and only our local areas to explore, we all became a little more Gilbert White.

Gilbert White is renowned for what he called ‘Watching Narrowly’, making minute observations of the natural world around him, and from that gaining a better understanding and appreciation of nature as a whole.

In the lockdown of 2021 we set up a seasonal photography competition where entrants would send us nature photographs which took on the theme of ‘watching narrowly’ and were overwhelmed by the response and the quality of the images sent to us. Displaying what an amazing world we live in. The winners displayed in this exhibition were chosen by the museum’s Chair of Trustees Professor Khalid Aziz.

Lights, Camera, Science!

Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium
From: 14 May '22 10:00am -
To: 03 Jul '22 04:00pm

In 2022 we’re celebrating 20 years of wow moments at the Science Centre. Take a trip down memory lane with us and enjoy some of our best show themes and demos from the past 20 years – all with a retro 2002 twist. Next stop - light.

One of our favourite uses of light in the 21st century has got to be in cinema. Did you know that the release of Star Wars in 2002 sparked a technological transformation in cinema? Instead of traditional film, movies were now being made digitally.

Digital film paved the way for things like CGI – Computer Generated Imagery – to grow massively too. CGI allowed the impossible to become possible. Harry Potter’s magic came to life. Anakin Skywalker really looked like he was in space. And Scooby Doo’s ghosts had never seemed more real. But what if the movie directors from 2002 had chosen to use practical light effects instead of visual effects? Let’s find out together what this might have looked like.

Lights, camera, science! Let’s explore how light, not CGI, could have been used in some of 2002’s top films. Our Inspirers will use some explosive experiments to recreate famous moments from the movies. There will also be some ‘illuminating’ audience participation along the way.

Discover how the famous Star Wars light sabers can uncover the secrets of the light spectrum. Be wowed by real magic as Harry Potter’s spells explode into life. And be prepared for a spooky encounter with a special light demo that would leave Scooby Doo trembling.

Steamship Shieldhall Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday - Titanic themed cruise to the Solent and see cruise ships depart

SS Shieldhall
From: 03 Jun '22 02:00pm -
To: 03 Jun '22 07:00pm

The RMS Titanic was launched in Belfast on the 31 May, 1911. Join us as Shieldhall steams down Southampton Water towards the Solent, and learn about Southampton’s links with the RMS Titanic. Hear about the New York incident that nearly resulted in a collision in Southampton Water between the Titanic and the SS New York, and of the fate of the Southampton crew after her collision with the iceberg. We will welcome guest speakers and Titanic experts on board. On our return to berth get close to the departing cruise ships Celebrity Silhouette and MSC Magnifica, always the cue to sound our whistle and play the ‘Shieldhall Organ’!

As part of your cruise, see the impressive engine room with its original steam engines at work and the bridge, with its traditional instruments and gleaming brasswork; admire the ship’s steam assisted steering gear (similar to that used on Titanic); talk to the Captain and our volunteer crew; listen to the informed commentary on the sights and sounds of Southampton Water and The Solent; pass close to the great ocean liners and container ships; walk the teak decks; relax in the Saloon with a wide range of refreshments including tea / coffee; real ale; a range of Titanic bottled beers; wine and hot and cold food, available on all trips. Courtesy parking available close to berth.

Children will have fun with our interactive Shieldhall Passport, collecting stickers from various stations on board!

To watch a video showing how Shieldhall is considered a ‘Titanic in Miniature’ due to her triple expansion steam engines and boilers, and to hear an interview with Chief Engineer Graham Mackenzie, please click here: https://snr.org.uk/the-mariners-mirror-podcast/titanic-in-miniature-the-wonderful-ss-shieldhall/

Plug in and power up! It’s time to blast into 2002 for an electrifying new science show. Over the past 20 years the way we use electricity has radically changed as our use of personal technology has evolved. We rely so heavily on electricity to power our lives. But what is it and how is it generated? Let’s find out together in Sparks, a brand new live science show.

In 2022 we’re celebrating 20 years of wow moments at the Science Centre. Take a trip down memory lane with us and enjoy some of our best show themes and demos from the past 20 years – all with a retro 2002 twist. Next stop - electricity.

Do you remember social media before Facebook (hands up MySpace users)? Video calling has kept businesses going and families connected over the past couple of years. And electric cars are paving the way for future travel. These innovations from the past 20 years are all powered by electricity.

It’s there at the flick of a switch. But what do we really know about electricity? Join the CEO of our noughties technology company, Sparks Innovation Corporation, as they delve into the fascinating world of electricity. Watch as static electricity and currents are brought to life through fun experiments. Discover more about how electricity is made with the atom balancer demo. And will you be able to generate your own electricity through pedal power – let’s find out!
