A visitor once described Exbury Gardens as ‘Heaven with the gates open’. It is a garden for people young and old, horticulturalist or enthusiastic gardener, or just a lover of beautiful places.

Lionel de Rothschild was a keen collector of plants and he was also a highly successful hybridiser of many different species and Exbury is still filled with his creations. This tradition has been continued by his descendants, Edmund and Leopold and his grandsons, Nicholas and Lionel who actively continue to develop the gardens to this day.

Lionel had several strands in his hybridisation programme but it was generally

dominated by a desire to produce increased hardiness, better flowers and improved flowering.

In the years that Lionel devoted to Exbury, he was innumerable crosses of which he kept only the best. His stud book records 1210 hybrids that he considered successful. He further analysed these and decided that 452 were worthy of being individually named and registered with the Royal Horticultural Society.

Subsequent generations have continued to hybridise and Rothschild crosses continue to grace the show benches of the RHS.

‘A truly fantastic day out. My wife and I were bowled over by the amazing spring colours of rhododendrons and azaleas and there was literally colour everywhere. There are beautiful areas to walk through as well as places to sit. We took a picnic in the hope of being able to sit by one of the ponds and were not disappointed – the reflections were as spectacular as the real thing! The next thing we want to do is return in the autumn to see the colours change as it must be beautiful’

David Parker, Christchurch

We March On:Southampton Football Club, Then and Now

SeaCity Museum
From: 29 Mar '18 10:00am -
To: 28 Oct '18 05:00pm

What goes on behind the scenes in the build up to a match? How is the club leading research to help prevent player injury? Which Southampton player introduced football to Brazil in 1894? And which player had the worst haircut in the 1980s?
Discover these things and a great deal more in a major exhibition about the Saints which will explore the club’s rich history and how it operates today to meet the challenges of Premier League Football. The club runs one of the country’s leading football academies and a state-of-the-art training facility at Staplewood, in the New Forest. The academy has produced many players who have gone on to play international football and become shining stars on the world stage.
Southampton Football Club has a strong spirit of community, with a legion of loyal fans, and has been an integral part of the City’s life since its foundation more than 130 years ago. The exhibition will chart the highs and lows, and provide an insight into life at the club through the supporters, ex-players and backroom staff.

SHAKESPEARE AT BEAULIEU

Beaulieu
From: 11 Jul '18 07:30pm -
To: 13 Jul '08 10:00pm

Castle Theatre Company, from the University of Durham, present one of Shakespeare’s most iconic and witty comedies, Twelfth Night. The complex tale of lost siblings, mistaken identities and drunk knights is at once moving, side-splittingly fund and builds to a genuinely heart-warming ending.

After a horrible shipwreck, the noblewoman Viola is separated from her twin brother, Sebastian. Assuming her brother has drowned and fearing for her life because she washed ashore in enemy territories, she disguises herself as a boy and gains employment in the house of the nearest Duke, called Orsino. The Duke is trying to get the wealthy heiress Olivia to marry him. After taking a liking to the new ‘boy’, Orsino sends Viola to propose on his behalf, despite the fact Viola has fallen head-over-heels in love with the Duke himself.

Meanwhile, at Olivia’s mansion, the fool Feste returns after a year’s travel; he is scorned by the snobbish steward Malvolio, who has designs upon his mistress and considers himself the de facto Lord. And Sir Toby Belch, the Lady’s cousin, is warned about his heavy drinking. Worried that his rich relatives will stop subsidising his hedonistic lifestyle, he summons his young friend, Sir Andrew, to woo Olivia so that he can continue to live with her. All the while, Olivia has been using the recent death of her brother to avoid making any choices about her marriage.

Into this walks Viola, with whom Olivia falls madly in love, thinking she was a boy. As everyone competes for Olivia’s hand in marriage, Sir Toby becomes worried that such rivalry will be too much for Sir Andrew. After a severe dressing down from Malvolio, Sir Toby plots to make Olivia think her steward has gone mad and to engineer a duel in which Sir Andrew can kill Viola.

Things get even more complicated when Sebastian arrives on the scene, having tracked his sister to this house. He immediately finds Olivia asking to marry him and Sir Andrew trying to kill him, though he’s not sure why…

For over 35 years Castle Theatre Company has taken its annual summer Shakespeare tour around the south of England and the USA, performing classic comedies on the lawns of stately homes, gardens and abbeys across two continents. Renowned for its high-standard, the Summer Shakespeare promises an evening of excellent family entertainment.

Moth Nights

Join us and learn a little more about the fantastic world of moths

Moths are sensitive indicators of the health of the natural environment and a vital part of the food chain; something which didn’t escape the attention of Gilbert White as early as the 18th Century.

We are having a series of moth nights (and mornings) this year one a month during the most active part of the mothing season (except for August when we take a break), each night will see a different variety of moths as we see the seasons change. Join us on this fantastic journey into the night time world of moths.

As well as helping to identify any moths that are seen, during the night sessions there will be an opportunity to experience other nocturnal life in the grounds especially looking out, or listening, for owls and bats.

This event will include outdoor activity including a short walk so please come dressed appropriately for the weather and time of year with sturdy footwear and bring a torch. A warm drink and biscuits will be provided during the evening’s activities and a light breakfast snack will be available for the morning sessions

Fort Nelson - Parliament and the First World War

An exhibition from the Parliamentary Archives

2nd July - 10:00 am - 30th August - 5:00 pm

Free

Through this fascinating exhibition, on loan from the Parliamentary Archives, you will be able to explore documents, paintings and objects which demonstrate the profound changes in Parliament and parliamentary democracy that occurred during the war years, as well as the relationship between Parliament and the war effort.

At the beginning of the war the House of Commons was made up exclusively of male MPs elected by a limited franchise, which excluded all women and roughly 40% of men from the electorate.  At the end of the war there was a massive extension of the franchise. Five million men and eight million women exercised their right to the vote for the first time in the December 1918 general election, and the first woman was elected to the House of Commons.

The exhibition is open daily 10 am – 5 pm daily. Admission is free.

FIELDS OF BATTLE

Winchester Cathedral
From: 08 Aug '18 06:30pm -
To: 20 Aug '18 06:30pm

The internationally recognised Fields of Battle, Lands of Peace 1418 photography exhibition will be launched by the War Memorial in the Outer Close of Winchester Cathedral on Saturday 7 July 2018 and will run until the end of July.

This free exhibition, created by photographer Michael St. Maur Sheil working with the late Prof. Richard Holmes, was conceived in 2005 and delivers the message that time and nature can heal the scars of war by presenting various landscapes of First World War conflicts as they are today. The images are mounted as outdoor displays.

The public launch will take place at the War Memorial in the cathedral grounds and begin at 6.30pm, Saturday 7 July 2018. The event will be introduced by The Very Reverend Catherine Ogle, Dean of Winchester and the exhibition photographer, Michael Sheil.

The first exhibition in 2014 was shared between Paris and London and since then it has developed as a unique fusion of art and history which has now been viewed by over 10 million people in nine different countries. Each year the exhibition is ‘reborn’ with a new theme.

For 2018 it will reflect the closing stages of the war and the impact of that war and the consequent peace agreements upon the history of the 20th-century and society today. It also seeks to show the global scale of the conflict which involved over fifty different nations, a fact which is seldom ever considered in the commemoration of the war.

The exhibition consists of fifteen ‘L’ shaped stands which present the viewer with over fifty large photographs, up to 2m wide. Together with over 20,000 words of especially written text and accompanying maps and archive pictures the exhibition presents an overview of the events of 1918 and explores the continuing conflicts which have been forgotten by history.

The exhibition is sponsored by Winchester City Council and Hampshire County Council and the outdoor displays will visit other cities before returning to London in October.

From: 10 Aug '18 10:30am -
To: 03 Sep '18 11:30am

STARTS AT 10:30AM EVERY DAY.

This fun and interactive presenter-led show includes audience participation.

Find out more about the universe that is revealed after the Sun sets. Look up at our night sky and visit some of our neighbouring worlds; Little Stars gives younger children the chance to go stargazing without staying up past bedtime!

A small amount of lighting is left on in the dome to help reassure those less confident in the dark, and to make it easier for anyone who needs to leave. This show uses the same great visuals as other live shows, recreating a realistic night sky and planets.

This 25 minute show has lots of calling out and pointing, is great for little ones and best for children up to about 5yr. Every show is a Chatterbox show and families are welcome to chat during the show to encourage their childrens' participation and make the most of their time in the planetarium.

We are Stars

Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium
From: 10 Aug '18 01:00pm -
To: 02 Sep '18 02:00pm

STARTS AT 1:00PM EVERY DAY.

Time space adventure!

Hold on for a journey through time and space to discover where we came from, on a story that spans the billions of years between the Big Bang and modern day. Follow the thread that connects us all to those early times through the atoms from which our bodies are formed. Where did they come from? How did they get here? And is it true that we really are all made of stars?

Narrated by Andy Serkis, this new film from the UK producers of We are Aliens and We are Astronomers won the Director's Award at the prestigious Jena Fulldome Festival and Best of show at the Fiske Fulldome Festival. The script was developed with help from Winchester Science Centre's Head of Education & Planetarium, Dr Jenny Shipway. Find out more at wearestars360.com.

The science content is most appropriate for ages 11yr+, as it best suits those who have already encountered the idea of atoms. However, the entrancing Victorian fairground style and award-winning soundtrack will draw all ages into the magical universe created within this incredible show. The story spans the formation of hydrogen, nuclear fusion in stars, formation of asteroids, our own solar system and evolution of life from the very first cells. Buckle up and open your minds for an incredible ride!

From: 10 Aug '18 03:30pm -
To: 03 Sep '18 04:00pm

STARTS AT 3:30PM EVERY DAY.

From atomic spaceships to the warp drive: explore the technology that may one day take us to the stars.

Narrated by Sean Bean

The impulse to strike out into the unknown, to see what’s over the horizon… is as old as humanity. Today, a whole new horizon beckons. Scientists now believe that our galaxy is filled with solar systems, including up to 9 billion Sun-like stars with planets similar to Earth.

Astronomers are racing to find habitable worlds, including any that might exist in the neighborhood of our Sun. But if we find one, how will we ever get there? How long will it take? What rocket designs might one day conquer the voids of space?

Faster Than Light: the Dream of Interstellar Flight will dazzle audiences with virtual rides aboard spacecraft of the future. They are based on whole new technologies designed to achieve ultra-high speeds, using exotic next generation rocket fuels and breakthrough concepts in physics. How far can our technology take us?

The science content is most appropriate for ages 11yr+, as it best suits those who have already encountered the idea of atoms. However, the entrancing visualisations and concepts will draw all ages into the futuristic universe created within this incredible show.

Up to 24 children will be able to enjoy an exciting daily programme of science-themed activities utilising the Centre, its surrounding green spaces and workshop rooms. Activities will include creating and running experiments, physical and mental games and challenges and arts-based activities to help explore and explain the world around us.

Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium is committed to sparking curiosity in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). This summer holiday club is designed to enhance a child's understanding of STEM in a fun, engaging and memorable way. Each week will focus on a different theme and no two days are the same.

You can see the full schedule in the attached download.

Summer Holiday Club

There will be a two-week programme, one on space and the other on forensic science, repeated three times over the summer holiday. We will rotate the days around, so if a child was to just attend Wednesdays for example, they will do something different each week.

Week 1: 23 - 27 July
Week 2: 30 July - 3 August
Week 3: 6 - 10 August
Week 4: 13 - 17 August
Week 5: 20 - 24 August

Secret of the Cardboard Rocket: SEN Friendly Showing

Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium
From: 13 Aug '18 04:00pm -
To: 03 Sep '18 05:00pm

STARTS 4:20pm EVERY DAY.

Perfect for younger children

Join two young explorers as they blast off in a homemade rocket-ship to explore our solar system. Visit all the eight planets and Pluto to discover how different they all are from Earth before flying back safely home.

A beautifully child-centred approach makes this the best choice astronomy show for children under 8yrs, and it is also popular with children up to 10yr. It has lovely music and gentle drama as the cardboard rocket battles the winds on Jupiter and explores windy Mars. Children will be able to follow the story and even help the characters - where is that red button?!

Autism friendly screening: There will be low lighting left on in the planetarium throughout the show, and sound levels will be set slightly lower than in normal public shows. Visitors are free to vocalise their enjoyment and as in all shows, staff will be close at hand to help anyone who needs to exit during the show.

Victorious Festival 2018

Southsea Common Portsmouth Hampshire PO5 3AE

Victorious Festival returns on the August Bank Holiday weekend, bigger and better than ever before.

Following on from its successful debut last year, the Friday night opening party returns for 2018, and will this year see more of the festival site opened up. The first tranche of acts has been announced, with indie rabble rousers The Libertines headlining. Also scheduled for the Friday bash are Kaiser Chiefs, Shed Seven and Lightning Seeds - with more big names set to follow.

Also returning for 2018 is the off-site camping, where festivalgoers can pitch up a tent off Portsea Island and get a free shuttle bus to the festival site.

Following the rapid expansion of Victorious in just a few short years, you can expect some huge acts to turn up at Southsea Common this summer. Last year's event was headlined by Stereophonics and Elbow, with the Castle Stage welcoming Olly Murs and Rita Ora. Stay tuned for line up announcements throughout spring.

One way trip to Poole - Sailing from Southampton

SS Shieldhall
From: 27 Aug '18 10:00am -
To: 27 Aug '18 04:00pm

Monday 27th August 2018, 10:00 - 16:00

One way trip to Poole, passengers make their own way back (coach transport may be booked – see separate form). See the sights of Southampton Water, The Needles, Hengistbury Head and Poole Harbour, passing Brownsea Island and Sandbanks. Shieldhall will berth at Poole Quay, close to Poole Pottery, an approx. 15 min walk from Poole Railway Station.

As part of your cruise, see the impressive engine room with its original steam engines at work and the bridge, with its traditional instruments and gleaming brasswork; admire the ship’s steam assisted steering gear (similar to that used on Titanic); talk to the Captain and our volunteer crew; listen to the informed commentary on the sights and sounds of Southampton Water and The Solent; pass close to the great ocean liners and container ships; walk the teak decks; relax in the Saloon with our wide range of refreshments including tea / coffee; real ale; a range of Titanic bottled beers; wine and hot and cold food, available on all trips.

Children will have fun with our interactive Shieldhall Log Book, collecting stickers from various stations on board!

For those wishing to travel one way and then return to Southampton we have arranged for a coach transfer from Poole. This will pick up close to the Shieldhall at 4.30pm and drop off at Southampton Docks. Journey time will be approx 75 / 90 mins. Just add this item to your basket when you checkout.

TOP TIP FOR GROUPS: This is a one-way trip, and as such is popular with groups and tour operators. Drop-off at the Shieldhall in Southampton, with the Coach Driver picking up at Poole Quay later in the day. Changing scenery throughout the trip with informed commentary of the sights.
