Stefan Gec: The Shepherd's Whistle

16 February 2019 - 27 April 2019

The Shepherd’s Whistle centres around the artist’s fascination with top-secret maps of strategic cities worldwide that were created by Soviet intelligence during the Cold War, alongside an M-72 Soviet army motorbike and sidecar from 1957. These two highly symbolic elements are brought together to create a complex project that explores the socio-political environment of the Cold War era, whilst also touching on current issues of identity, migration and immigration.

Riding the M-72 motorbike and navigating using the Soviet maps, Gec has made a number of journeys to five UK towns and cities that were identified by the Soviets as having strategic importance. The starting point for all of these journeys has been Gec’s hometown of Huddersfield in West Yorkshire.

Following the end of the Second World War, there were around 250 displaced Ukrainians, including Stefan Gec’s father, in the Huddersfield area. An important development for that community was the formation of the Huddersfield branch of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain, whose headquarters opened in 1956. Starting from Huddersfield, Gec rode the M-72 motorbike to and around Derry-Londonderry, Blyth, Greenock, Barrow-in-Furness and Southampton. Throughout the project Gec has worked with the artist/filmmaker Lee Hassall, to document the journeys using 8mm film shot on Soviet cine cameras of the same era.

For The Shepherd’s Whistle, Gec presents a number of newly-made works, including text and sculpture, shown alongside the film footage made in each location, examples of the Soviet maps and his M-72 motorbike.

During the Cold War, the Soviet military undertook a top-secret enterprise: to create comprehensive surveillance maps of the British Isles. These detailed the widths of roads, heights of bridges, depths of rivers and names of streets. They also revealed the exact location and purpose of every building of strategic importance. Printed exclusively in Cyrillic script, the maps were translated phonetically so that a Russian speaker on the ground could easily pronounce place names. The maps being exhibited in Southampton have an additional significance, as the city is home to the Ordnance Survey Headquarters, and is the final destination for Gec’s UK journeys.

The M-72 Soviet motorbike and sidecar that Gec uses is presented along with its original registration paperwork. Manufactured in Kiev, Ukraine, for the Soviet army, the motorbike is a direct, unauthorised copy of Germany’s pre-war BMW model R71. Gec has painstakingly dismantled, cleaned and rebuilt the engine and body, whilst preserving its original ‘found’ appearance.

The Shepherd’s Whistle builds on Gec’s previous works and thematic concerns, however, for the first time Gec will actively engage as a performer - the journey serves as a reflection on his artistic practice. The chosen locations retrace previous projects that explored similar themes: 'Trace Elements' (1990), 'Detached Bell Tower' (1995-96) and Buoy (1996-present). Alongside the physical experience of revisiting these places, the films help mark the legacy of this research activity in each location.

The Shepherd’s Whistle has been commissioned by John Hansard Gallery in partnership with Locus+, and is supported by Arts Council England.

Anya Lewin: More than Stories: A Film Trilogy

16 February 2019 - 04 May 2019

More than Stories is a trilogy of films inspired by Anya Lewin’s family photographs and stories, and their interconnections with screen history and public archives. Each film has at its heart the haunted memories of Jewish life embedded in a particular story passed down to Lewin by her father.

'Fez: The Royal Scent' (2019) has been made specifically for this exhibition and will be presented alongside 'With Heartfelt Gratitude for the Painless Treatment' (2008) and 'Chez Paulette on the Sunset Strip' (2013). 'Fez: The Royal Scent' completes Lewin’s trilogy of installations that will be shown here together for the first time.

These films take place in three different cities that Lewin’s family inhabited during their wanderings: Cairo, Berlin, and Los Angeles. Each of the films was shot within built sets that recreate the locations central to each story: a perfume shop, a dental office, a coffee house. Aspects of these sets reach out from the films and appear in the gallery space so that the audience becomes part of an expanded frame.

'Fez: The Royal Scent' takes place from 1926 to 1928, when Lewin’s father was a child, and his father and mother decided to leave Berlin for Cairo, Egypt, which had a large Jewish immigrant community. The film is shot in four languages: Arabic, French, Polish and English, acknowledging the multi-lingual environment the family would have found themselves in. Once settled in Cairo the family opened a perfume shop and Lewin’s grandmother – who had a degree in chemistry – invented a scent called Fez that was presented in a bottle in the shape of the common Fez hat. The bottles were stacked in the shop window when one day King Fuad I happened to drive past, stopped the royal car and bought all the stock. Fez became the Royal Perfume and the family stayed in Cairo for two years.

'With Heartfelt Gratitude for the Painless Treatment' blends the historical with the imaginative. Developed from an inherited and unexplained collection of autographed photographs of 1920s film and theatre stars who frequented the Berlin dental practice of Lewin’s grandfather, Dr Ignatz Lewin, the story tells of a Jewish Polish family, who fled to the USA in 1938, soon after Krystallnacht and before Hitler invaded Poland. The film travels through the Weiner Library archive to discover the original Berlin address of the dentist surgery to reveal a film within a film of the fascinating patients, with a nod to silent German Cinema.

'Chez Paulette on the Sunset Strip' brings together the launch of the European style coffee house in Los Angeles, the experience of Jewish immigration to Hollywood, the influence of Europe on Hollywood, and the blurring of fact, fiction, the real and the reconstructed.

In 1958 Max Lewin took over his family’s failing cake shop. Capitalising on its hip location on Los Angeles’ Sunset Strip, he turned it into a coffee house called Chez Paulette. With the help of Marlon Brando, who became a regular customer to help build its reputation, Chez Paulette became a popular Hollywood bohemian hangout favoured by actors, poets, folk singers and flamenco guitarists and dancers. At the same time as Chez Paulette emerged, along came 77 Sunset Strip (also 1958–64) one of the first detective television series. 77 Sunset Strip and Chez Paulette were brought together when a set of the café was built on the Studio lot, and featured in the series with Max Lewin as host.

These tales and tidbits, TV scenes, facts and momentary glimpses from photos in a scrapbook have been reworked, copied, quoted, and reconfigured into a film script and made into a film that is both finished and unfinished at the same time. As the director/detective figure in the film says, “there is no mystery, just history”.

To accompany the exhibition Gordian Projects is publishing Anya Lewin's photo-text book, More Than Stories. The book examines the archive materials — photographs, newspaper clippings and other ephemera — from the research processes that culminated in her film trilogy.

The production of Fez: The Royal Scent has been made possible through support from Arts Council England. Production and audio-visual exhibition services have been provided by Spike Film and Video at Spike Island.

Esther Teichmann and Monster Chetwynd: Phantasie Fotostudio II

16 February 2019 - 23 May 2019

Phantasie Fotostudio II is the most recent work made as part of the ongoing collaboration between artists Esther Teichmann and Monster Chetwynd. Since having first met at the Royal College of Art during their MA studies in 2004, the pair have been struck by the parallels in reference materials that their very distinct practices draw upon. Their practices also overlap in their adoption of tableaux vivantes and their use of theatrical backdrops and sets. Thus begun a dialogue and close friendship that has taken the form of making a joint body of work once a decade.

Their previous collaboration 'Phantasie Fotostudio, The Esthacus Teichwynd Photos' (fusing Spartacus Chetwynd and Esther Teichmann), was made and shown in Berlin in 2007. Utilising photography and collage, these works playfully draw on diverse references, from Walter Benjamin’s essay Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction, Man Ray and Lee Miller’s solarisations, to Brigitte Bardot as Roger Vadim’s muse, Brooke Shields in Blue Lagoon (1980, dir. Randal Kleiser), Satyricon, David Lynch, and Walkabout (1971, dir. Nicholas Roeg). The subjects within these works recall imagined icons, at once beautiful and grotesque, a Frankenstein of moments in modern cinema and culture, each work unique and distinctly archival in quality, as though found on the kind of cutting-room floor you might encounter in a dream. All the protagonists are part of the artists’ circle of friends, artists, curators, musicians in their own right, with the inclusion of family.

Phantasie Fotostudio II brings many of the same protagonists together again along with new collaborators in this Warholesque film montage of extended portraits. Punctuated by the repetition of a crying figure, the film becomes a narrative of gazes, dramatized further by the original string quartet score by Benji Jeffrey, artist, musician and composer, who is also one of the protagonists within the film. Directed by Esther Teichmann, all the subjects selected costumes from Monster Chetwynd’s extraordinary wardrobe, under her careful guidance, with contributions by artist and make-up enthusiast Paul Kindersley. This most recent collaboration features not only a new generation of artist protagonists alongside Teichmann’s and Chetwynd’s peers, but also their own children, both in front of and behind the camera.

Esther Teichmann

Esther Teichmann (b.1980, Karlsruhe, Germany) is a London based artist working with the photographic across still and moving image installations. Her practice looks at the relationships between loss, desire and the imaginary, slipping between autobiography and fiction. Recent solo museum shows include Heavy the Sea, Transformer Station, Cleveland and Mondschwimmen, Reiss-Engelhorn Museum, Mannheim. In collaboration with artist Christopher Stewart she curated and edited the exhibition and book Staging Disorder (2015) that included work by An-My Lê, Sarah Pickering, Richard Mosse and Broomberg & Chanarin. Teichmann received an MA (2005) and PhD (2011) in Fine Art from the Royal College of Art (RCA) and is Head of Programme of Master of Research, and Coordinator for Critical and Historical Studies at the RCA. Esther is currently working on a monograph of visual works and essays, On Sleeping and Drowning, forthcoming by Stanley/ Barker.

Monster Chetwynd

Monster Chetwynd (b. 1973, London, UK) lives in Glasgow, UK. Chetwynd’s practice intertwines performance, sculpture, painting, installation and video. Her work incorporates elements of folk plays, street spectacles, popular culture and Surrealist cinema. Her performances and videos often employ troupes of performers – friends and relatives of the artist – and feature handmade costumes and props. She has performed and exhibited internationally, and was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 2012. Solo exhibitions and performances include those at Foundation Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Torino, Italy (2018); Sadie Coles HQ London (2018); CCA Glasgow (2016); Bergen Assembly, Bergen Kunsthall, Norway (2016); Bonner Kunstverein, Bonn, Germany (2016); Arts Council Collection Commission (2016); Nottingham Contemporary (2014); Studio Voltaire, London (2014); Massimo de Carlo, Milan, Italy (2014); Sadie Coles HQ, London (2014); and the New Museum, New York (2011–12). She has been involved in numerous group exhibitions, most recently: Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck, Remagen, Germany (2016); Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zürich, Switzerland (2016); Liverpool Biennial (2016); Glasgow International (2016); Edinburgh ArtFestival (2015); the Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art, Sweden (2013); and ‘Performance Now: The First Decade of the New Century’, various venues, USA (2012–14).

Benji Jeffrey

Benji Jeffrey (b. 1988, Halifax) is a London based artist, musician and composer, working primarily in moving image and live performance to create works that interrogate and play with notions of theatricality, performativity, identity and authenticity, friendship, enthusiasm and joy. Music and collaboration are central to Jeffrey’s practice, which includes curatorial projects and drag. Benji received an MA from the Royal College of Art in Moving Image in 2017 and a BA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art in 2011.

Royal Victoria Country Park was once the site of the world’s largest hospital, now only the iconic chapel remains

The Royal Victoria Hospital was built in 1856 and served the British military for over a century. As the British Army’s first purpose built hospital, Royal Victoria was a unique and ambitious project which would help change the face of the medical world.

The chapel is all that remains of the quarter mile long hospital and is home to our interesting heritage exhibition which gives people the opportunity to learn all about the history of the military hospital and see photographs and relics from the site's fascinating past.

The Chapel conservation works

Lottery funded

Thanks to grants from Hampshire County Council and Heritage Lottery Funding, the Park’s historic buildings and heritage have been restored. The project included conservation work to the original façade of the chapel and the removal of the 1980 extension. There is a new pavilion to the side of the chapel with a kiosk, toilets and offices, providing facilities for the chapel to host music and cultural events in the evenings. Around the park are points of information explaining the size of the hospital and its historical significance.

The project was completed in the summer of 2018; the chapel now offers public access all year round, five days a week - including the tower and gallery.

Tower tours

The 150ft tower of the Royal Victoria Chapel is a historic landmark that has stood over Southampton Water since 1856. It offers breath-taking panoramic views across Royal Victoria Country Park, the Solent and beyond.

Now, following a major conservation project, you can climb the 109 steps to the top of the Tower and marvel at the spectacular views.

Thanks to the generous support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, Hampshire County Council have completed a major conservation and restoration project which has seen the Royal Victoria Chapel returned to its Victorian splendour.

All income generated through Tower Visits support the running costs of the Royal Victoria Chapel.

Discovering the Moths of Selborne

Gilbert White & The Oates Collections
From: 17 Apr '19 10:00am -
To: 24 Oct '19 10:00pm

Moths are sensitive indicators of the health of the natural environment and a vital part of the food chain; something which didn’t escape the attention of Gilbert White as early as the 18th Century.

We are having a monthly series of moth events again this year during the most active part of the season. Each time you will have an opportunity to see a different variety of moths as the seasons change.

Join us through the seasons and learn a little more about the fantastic world of moths.

You are welcome to join us from around dusk to see how the moth lights are set up and experience the first visitors of the night to the lights. Based on past experience, the June and July evenings also potentially offer the special experience of watching male Ghost Moths (Hepialus humuli) lekking (displaying) on the meadow around dusk. Alternatively you may wish to experience the opening of the traps in the morning. The choice is yours and all events are for all ages and experiences. Booking and pre-payment is available and preferred.

As well as helping to identify any moths that are seen, during the night sessions there will be an opportunity to experience other nocturnal life in the grounds especially looking out, or listening, for owls and bats.

These events will include outdoor activity including a short walk in the relative dark so please come dressed appropriately for the weather and time of year with sturdy footwear and bring a torch. A warm drink and biscuits will be available during the activities.

£6 per session – hot drinks and snacks provided

Sunday gun firings: Live firings of historic artillery pieces

Royal Armouries Fort Nelson
From: 28 Apr '19 10:00am -

Fort Nelson is one of the few places where you can experience live firings of historic artillery pieces.

These special gun firings are carried out by uniformed detachments of the Portsdown Artillery Volunteers (PAV), and include authentic gun drills and talks.

On 28 April they will be firing the 13-inch mortar. This little gun certainly packs a powerful punch and the firing is a spectacular experience in the confines of the North Mortar Battery.

Firings will take place at 11 am, 11.30 am, 2 pm, 2.30 pm, 3 pm and 3.30 pm.

This is a free event, suitable for all ages. Ear defenders will be available.

Welcome to New Beginnings.

New Beginnings. What does that mean? For many of us it symbolises a new chapter of our lives. Whether that be turning the page after a hard period of our lives or simply building on from success and happiness into a new stage of our development.

For many years now my fans have been attending my shows looking to reconnect with their loved ones for some guidance on how they can turn a new page or advice on how they can make the most of an opportunity to set them on a path to a new horizon. My new 2019 tour symbolises all of that as I look to bring you in contact with this who you treasure the most. ‘New Beginnings’ also sees an opportunity for me to change what I do and how I do it and turn the page. The launch of my all new members area will compliment my new tour and work side by side to provide you not only with a truly magical evening of mediumship but also the tools and advice to launch your own ‘New Beginning’.

The structure of my events is something I also take great pride in and I believe we have developed a truly unique show experience where everyone in the audience can take a memory home with them that heightens our belief that our loved ones are with us every step of the way.

May Fort Talk: Women in khaki

Royal Armouries Fort Nelson
From: 15 May '19 07:30pm -
To: 15 May '19 09:00pm

Don’t miss the latest in the series of Fort talks. The Royal Armouries museum at Fort Nelson will host this month’s Fort Talks on Wednesday 15 May with special guest speaker Keith Brigstock.

During the evening, Keith Brigstock will highlight the crucial role women have played in the British Army since 1914, the start of the First World War, to present day. As the entire nation mobilised for First World War, Keith will explain how women stepped up to line and continued to break boundaries during the Second World War as they took on increasingly diverse roles but were still prevented from fighting. The talk will focus on the changing roles of women in the Army, from small beginnings to essential service during this county’s darkest days.

Keith Brigstock, who was a gunner himself for over twenty years in the Royal Artillery and is still employed by the Ministry of Defence at Larkhill, is a keen military historian and speaks regularly on a range of First and Second World War subjects. He is a member of The Garrison Artillery Volunteers, a volunteer hobby group of historians whose passion is the Royal Artillery.

Date: Wednesday 15 May 2019

Time: 7:30 pm – 9 pm

Tickets: £5 per person which includes refreshments

Tickets are available in advance from the Royal Armouries website: royalarmouries.org/event/fort-talks or from the Fort Nelson Visitor Centre.

May half term: Second World War activities at Fort Nelson

Royal Armouries Fort Nelson
From: 27 May '19 10:00am -
To: 31 May '19 05:00pm

Come and stretch your legs and get some fresh air this spring whilst participating in our Second World War themed programme of family-centred activities and fun.

Children are invited to enrol in Fort Nelson’s Home Guard where they will be trained by costumed characters on how to identify and disable WWII enemy tanks. Their new skills will be put to fun use as they work together to build a giant tank, before discovering what a dangerous life it was for soldiers as they re-enact an air raid with our period characters.

Visitors can discover more about the Special Operations Executive, set up in 1940 to wage a secret war, and how the SOE developed ‘rat bombs’, (as bad as they sound!) before testing their skills at deciphering a Morse code message.

Fort Nelson’s action-packed half term activities are designed to enlighten and entertain all ages, including free fact-packed guided tours and the opportunity to get up close with history in our themed talks and special object handling sessions.

Fort Nelson will be open from 10 am to 5 pm (April-October) and museum admission is free. Parking is £3.

May half term activity programme at the Fort:

Monday 27 – Friday 31 May 2019

Second World War tours

Free fact-packed 30 minute guided tours, 11:15 am and 1:30 pm.

Join the Home Guard activities for children

A member of the Fort Nelson Home Guard will drill young recruits in how to identify and disable an enemy tank and work together to build a giant jig saw tank.

- 11 am and 2 pm, FREE, parental supervision required at all times.

Air Raid Drill

Fort Nelson’s Second World War activities are designed to enthuse and entertain all ages. Children will have the opportunity to discover what a dangerous life it was for the soldiers as they re-enact an air raid with costumed characters.

- FREE, 1 pm and 3 pm daily.

Talk: Weapons of D-Day

Visitors can get up close with history in our free Weapons of D-day themed insight talk and themed handling session.

- Daily 12 noon and 3:30 pm, FREE

Talk: S.O.E (Special Operations Executive)

Bank Holiday Monday 27th May 2019, 11:00 - 18:00

Early Bird offer valid until 23:59 on Sunday 13th January 2019

Cruise down Southampton Water to the Solent and then head west and travel out beyond Hurst Castle and the Needles Passage to the Needles themselves, one of the most photographed and iconic coastal locations in the UK. On your return pass the departing cruise ship Aurora - always the chance to sound our whistle and play the ‘Shieldhall Organ’!

As part of your cruise, see the impressive engine room with its original steam engines at work and the bridge, with its traditional instruments and gleaming brasswork; admire the ship’s steam assisted steering gear (similar to that used on Titanic); talk to the Captain and our volunteer crew; pass close to the great ocean liners and container ships; walk the teak decks; relax in the Saloon with our wide range of refreshments including tea / coffee; real ale; a range of Titanic bottled beers; wine and hot and cold food, available on all trips.

Children will have fun with our interactive Shieldhall Passport, collecting stickers from various stations on board!

Tour and Tea – Walking on History

Winchester Cathedral
From: 01 Jun '19 10:30am -
To: 01 Jun '19 11:30am

The famous tile pavements of Winchester Cathedral enable us to track the stories behind the Cathedrals history and the tales of the people who influenced its development.

We'll walk where pilgrims and the famous have been before us, explore what they were trying to tell us through these designs and how the tiles reflected the life and times.

It’s an intriguing tale from 1093 through to today.

After the tour enjoy a coffee or hot drink with a homemade cake in the Refectory and discuss and ask questions about what you have seen and experienced in the Cathedral.

Ticket information

Tickets: £15.00 (plus £1 per ticket booking fee, capped at £5) Includes tea or coffee and cake to be taken in the Cathedral Refectory after the tour, available online or by phone on 01962 857 275. Tour last approx 1 hour. Tours must be booked in advance and have limited spaces available.

Mark Watson: The Infinite Show

Sunday 16th June 2019 at NST Campus

Running time: 1hr 50mins (incl. interval)

Recommended age: 14+

Cluster-bombed with yoghurt on 'Taskmaster', half-killed on 'Bear Grylls' Celebrity Island', Watson returns to what he's best at: being indoors. Inspired by the mostly alarming state of the world his children are growing up in, and a genuine, urgent desire to do something about it, this show is about empathy.

99 percent of the world's population is made up of other people: why can't we understand them?

As scrawny and impassioned as ever, one of the UK's most beloved and thinnest acts offers some suggestions, with his usual notoriously high joke- and-rant-per-minute rate.

‘He sparkles with originality and verve'

Chortle

'A kind of unstoppably funny Superhero'

Sunday Times

'Hugely entertaining, craftsmanlike, remarkable'

Telegraph
