KINGS & SCRIBES: THE BIRTH OF A NATION

Winchester Cathedral
From: 01 Oct '19 09:00am -
To: 31 Jan '25 05:00pm
THIS EXHIBITION IS CURRENTLY CLOSED.

Be one of the first to explore Kings and Scribes: The Birth of a Nation, a stunning new exhibition at Winchester Cathedral.
Winchester Cathedral is a living monument to the heritage of England and is one of the most historically significant buildings in Britain. From the time of Alfred the Great until after the Norman Conquest, Winchester was England’s capital and the Cathedral was its royal chapel. Much of England’s early history was based here and twelve English kings are believed to be buried here – meaning that Winchester can lay claim to being the first Royal Mausoleum. The opening of Kings and Scribes: The Birth of a Nation marks the culmination of an ambitious seven-year project to unlock the Cathedral’s stories and treasures by inspiring active engagement in the interpretation and exploration of our heritage.

Thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and other generous supporters, a spectacular three-level exhibition space in the South Transept will take visitors on a journey through over 1,000 years of history, whilst offering awe-inspiring views of the Cathedral.

There are four exciting galleries to explore:

A SCRIBE’S TALE
The Winchester Bible is the largest and finest of all surviving 12th-century English bibles. Hear the incredible story of how and why the Winchester Bible was made, in the Cathedral where it was created, and admire its exquisite illuminated initials and elaborate decorative schemes.

THE BIRTH OF A NATION
Winchester played a unique role in shaping early English history and Old Minster, the Anglo-Saxon Cathedral, lay at the centre of its foundation. Join us on an intriguing journey of discovery as we unearth the secrets hidden within the Cathedral’s mortuary chests, meet influential Anglo-Saxon kings in the city from which they ruled and discover the role of Winchester’s Anglo-Saxon and Norman Cathedrals in the birth of a nation.

DECODING THE STONES
Unlock the mysteries of Winchester Cathedral, a building which has been created, destroyed and remade over centuries of struggle and Civil War. Decoding the Stones will tell the story of the Cathedral itself, linking modern restoration works and contemporary craftspeople with their medieval predecessors.

THE MEZZANINE
Explore the realities of monastic life at Winchester Cathedral Priory with a fascinating rolling programme of displays from the Cathedral archives. The Mezzanine also provides access to the remarkable 17th-century Morley Library and its outstanding collection of books, which have remained in their current location for over 400 years.

Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium
From: 17 Jul '21 09:20am -
To: 19 Sep '21 05:00pm

Did you know almost three quarters of the world’s surface is covered by water? But what lies beneath the deep blue seas? And what sounds can be found?

Between Saturday 17 July and Sunday 19 September, join the Underwater Agents for a journey below the surface of the world’s oceans in a brand new live science show. Grab your snorkels and help uncover the mysteries of the sounds that lurk beneath the deep. Discover how sound travels underwater. Learn why human ears aren’t great at picking up sounds under the surface. Find out what natural and man-made sounds might be found beneath the waves. And this wouldn’t be a Winchester Science Centre show without some explosive wow moments. Get set for awesome live science with fun audience participation and exciting demos.

And that’s not all there is to do at Winchester Science Centre over the summer months…

The days may be longer but in the Planetarium the night sky is always putting on a show. Blast into space for the family adventure of the summer in Solar System Adventure. With hundreds of moons, eight planets, five dwarf planets and one Sun to explore, where will the journey take you? And there’s not one but two 360⁰ fulldome subtitled film shows. Vladimir the polar bear and James the penguin are off exploring Earth and the Solar System in Polaris (17 July to 8 August). And Celeste and Moon are heading past our home to find out more about exoplanets, oceanic worlds and super-Earths in Beyond the Sun (9 August to 19 September).

Make the most of the warmer summer days, or embrace the unpredictable rainy British weather, with outdoor fun. In the nature-based Bio:Space zone, families can take part in exciting activities, both inside and outside. There’s also an outdoor adventure playground, trim trail and lots of space to enjoy a picnic surrounded by the stunning nature of the South Downs National Park.

Back inside, be wowed by the huge demos in Science Live and come on an exciting adventure through immersive exhibits. Zoom off on an out-of-this-world mission in the Explorer:Space zone and interact with the brand new sound, hearing and vibration exhibition. Venture into an enormous 10m long guitar. Experience the wonder of acoustics inside the sonic rocket. And climb inside a giant ear to explore its inner workings. Plus so much more!

Westquay’s Enchanted Labyrinth

Westquay Shopping Centre
From: 03 Aug '21 10:00am -
To: 30 Aug '21 07:00pm

Once upon a time there was an Enchanted Labyrinth, created by a great Wizard to serve as a prison for a devious Warlock running amok in Southampton. The Wizard cast powerful spells and enlisted mythical creatures to serve as guardians.

Those troubled days have passed and the Warlock is gone, but the guardians remain at their post and much of the magic still lingers.

Countless adventurers have dared to enter but few return to tell the tale. If you keep your guard, you will make it safely through to the heart of the Labyrinth and unlock your ride on the Wizard’s Tower.

This summer we invite you and your family to experience The Enchanted Labyrinth. Pick up your activity passport discover the eight mythical creatures to crack the maze and to earn your place on The Wizard’s Tower (our 16.5 metre tall helter skelter).

Watch out, lots more hidden surprises await, from secret gardens and through the hedge see saws!

Find The Enchanted Labyrinth on The Esplanade from 31st July – 30th August 10am – 7pm. Entry is free of change.

Trip to view the Fastnet Race

Cruise to watch the start of the 2021 Fastnet Race. RORC expects a fantastic fleet to attend one of the world’s great ocean races! After witnessing the departure of the multihulls and IRC 2, IRC 1 and IRC Z & VO65 classes from Cowes, we will continue westwards towards The Needles, one of the most photographed and iconic coastal locations in the UK. On your return pass the departing cruise ships Britannia and Arcadia – always the chance to sound our whistle and play the ‘Shieldhall Organ’!

As part of your cruise, see the impressive engine room with its original steam engines at work and the bridge, with its traditional instruments and gleaming brasswork; admire the ship’s steam assisted steering gear (similar to that used on Titanic); talk to the Captain and our volunteer crew; pass close to the great ocean liners and container ships; walk the teak decks; relax in the Saloon with our wide range of refreshments including tea / coffee; real ale; a range of Titanic bottled beers; wine and hot and cold food, available on all trips.

Children will have fun with our interactive Shieldhall Log Book, collecting stickers from various stations on board!

Online Talk: Aspects of Southampton's LGBT History: uncovering a largely hidden past

SeaCity Museum
From: 21 Sep '21 07:00pm -
To: 21 Sep '21 08:00pm

Aspects of Southampton’s LGBT+ history: uncovering a largely hidden past.

LGBT+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans +) history is sometimes referred to as a hidden history. This is because so much history went unrecorded or was erased at a time when being lesbian, gay, bisexual or trans (LGBT) was seen as sinful, shameful and even criminal. It is only in very recent times, largely since the 1960s, that some people have made great efforts to record what was previously missing from many history books and archives.

Dr Clifford Williams has delved extensively into the archives to unearth some of Southampton’s LGBT+ history. Learn about the gay Southampton barber who ended up being recorded in a pamphlet written by a condemned man in 1750; hear about the year the city council welcomed the Campaign for Homosexual Equality Conference after other cities and towns refused them a venue; discover how, compared to Portsmouth and much of the UK, Southampton in the mid 1970s was generally a good place to be gay/lesbian. The talk will look at some of the documents and photographs associated with the city’s LGBT+ past.

Dr Clifford Williams is an author and researcher. His books include A history of women policing Hampshire and the Isle of Wight 1915-2016 (HCHS 2016) and Courage to Be: Organised gay youth in England 1967-1990 (The Book Guild Ltd. 2021 (forthcoming)). He is currently researching a book on policing gay and bisexual men 1950-2010.

Online Talk: Building Spitfires Without A Factory

SeaCity Museum
From: 28 Sep '21 07:00pm -
To: 28 Sep '21 08:00pm

Eighty one years ago, with the Battle of Britain being fought out over the summer skies of southern England, the Luftwaffe began targeting the aircraft factories, including the Supermarine Spitfire factory in Woolston. A plan to move production of RJ Mitchell’s iconic fighter from the Woolston and Itchen Works had already been begun some months before but now a complete dispersal was ordered.

This talk by Alan Matlock will explore the human story of those attacks from the point of view of those in the buildings or watching from across the town at the time and will also investigate some of the secret sites used to manufacture Spitfires in Southampton and beyond.

SeaCity Museum
From: 26 Oct '21 07:00pm -

Over the century since the sinking of the RMS Titanic many conflicting theories have emerged that argue that it was not an iceberg that sank the Titanic, but something altogether different: a submarine, a fire or even that the wreck isn't the Titanic at all! Join SeaCity's resident historian Andy Skinner to cut through the theories and uncover the facts of this matter in this illuminating, enlightening and interesting foray into the world of Titanic conspiracy theories.

Westquay Quiet Hour

Westquay Shopping Centre
From: 06 Nov '21 09:00am -
To: 30 Jun '22 10:00am

Did you know Westquay runs a regular weekly quiet hour? The centre and its retailers work together to create a quieter than normal shopping environment. The hour allows visitors young and old that find large public spaces, noise and crowds of people difficult to deal with.

We hope this offer builds on the great work that’s been achieved over the last year with a range of our community partners to continuously work towards Westquay being an accessible environment throughout the year.

Westquay's quiet hour takes place every Monday 9am - 10am.
