Are you ready for a camping expedition in Antarctica?

You’ve booked your cruise and noticed the camping option – should you do it? Our answer will always be yes – trust us, this will make for extraordinary memories and is a highlight for many expeditioners! No prior camping or polar experience needed. You should be in good health with a reasonable level of fitness to participate in camping in Antarctica and we recommend checking with your physician beforehand if this activity is safe for you. Ensure that your medical emergency evacuation insurance does not exclude activities such as camping – this is important and we may check this prior to the trip. 

How does it work?

We’ll start with a briefing one day before your camping experience takes place. The briefing is mandatory so please don’t skip it or else you’ll have to stay behind on the ship. And what a pity to miss out on this adventure, having to hear all the amazing stories and experiences from returning campers at breakfast.

At the briefing we’ll show you how the camping gear works, go through logistics, safety and rules ashore. Campsites need to be scouted by us beforehand and everything depends on weather conditions, so we’ll usually know only a few hours in advance when we’ll go ashore for our adventure. On camp day, you’ll enjoy dinner aboard the Sea Spirit before starting your adventure. A Zodiac will then take you in a small group (max. 40 expeditioners) ashore and our team will help set up the campsite, assemble camp toilets (you are required to comply with our environmental rules and no-waste policy) and help you to get comfortable. There will be no transfer to the ship after your drop-off (only in case of an emergency). You’ll be slumbering in mummy sleeping bags suitable for temperatures as low as -18°C (0°F). Outside temperatures will range around 0°C (32°F) with a little below freezing during the night. You can’t bring any food or drinks except water, but we’ll promise the hearty breakfast next morning back aboard will taste like no other!

What’s provided by us?

We’ll equip you with mummy sleeping bags (they’re comfortable, water-repellent, connectable and designed for temperatures as low as -18°C/0°F), a freshly laundered cotton sleeping bag liner, an insulated foam sleeping pad and a waterproof nylon bivy sack (which slips over the sleeping bag). Members of our expedition team will camp out there with you, help you set up the sites and will be there all night in case you need any assistance.

What clothing is suitable for camping in Antarctica?

Dress like you’re going on a Zodiac cruise! Warm base-layers made from polyester or merino-wool are perfect, followed by middle layers of fleece or wool and topped off with a hat, socks, gloves, waterproof outer gear like snow pants and your Poseidon Expeditions parka. We do not recomment cotton clothes (poor heat retention) and suggest that you choose wool and synthetics instead! Bring one change of thermal underwear in case you sweat during campsite set-up or while exploring so you’ll start your night warm and dry. If you camp earlier in the season you’ll experience plenty of daylight, but during late summer in Antarctica it may get dark early. We recommend packing a torch/flashlight to find your way around the campsite, as well as any medication you may require.

What are the weather conditions like?

We carefully select the place and day for our camping expedition and monitor weather conditions to make this a pleasurable and safe experience. Usually temperatures ashore stay around 0°C (32°F), but it can get below freezing during the night. Our equipment is carefully selected to keep you warm and comfortable even during cooler nights.

Be ready to kayak!

Our kayaking club is very active and eager to get out whenever weather and sea conditions permit. After all, you want to make the most of it. Be prepared to be flexible and venture out whenever your instructors schedule a sea kayaking expedition so you don’t miss out on the adventure of a lifetime.

All equipment provided.

We’ll take the burden off you to pack any extra gear and provide you with everything you need for your kayaking experience. All paddling gear (paddling suit, spray skirt, personal floating device/life jacket, booties and neoprene pogies) is included. We use only state-of-the art kayaks that are durable and extremely stable.

Average fitness level required.

You don’t have to be a world-class kayaker to join our group, but we’ll expect basic kayaking and paddling experience prior to your trip. Need to brush up on your skills? Just schedule a lesson or two before you leave for Antarctica to get back on track! You also have to be able to swim and to climb into your kayak. A good indicator for your fitness level is that you should be able to lift yourself by your own strength out of a swimming pool without using a ladder.

Safety first.

Our qualified instructors will ensure safety during the kayaking expeditions and help you board and de-board your kayak. You’ll also get a full briefing prior to your first outing and we’ll always have a safety boat close to our paddlers – just in case.

Don’t fear the sea.

Sure, you’ve heard of the wild Drake Passage (we’ll be crossing it aboard our expedition ship, the Sea Spirit) and harsh conditions of the Southern Ocean surrounding the White Continent – but don’t worry! We’ll deploy our kayakers in protected bays where waters are calm. While you may encounter wind, moderate waves and swell, we won’t let you paddle in dangerous conditions! Water temperatures are usually around 0°C (32°F) and your dry suit and spray skirt will protect you from getting too wet.

Sometimes you’ll have to make a choice…

You’ll paddle while non-kayaking expeditioners engage in other activities such as shore landings and Zodiac cruising. Sometimes you’ll rejoin the group half-way through your daily adventures, but sometimes you’ll have to choose either to kayak or join the main group.

And finally...enjoy!

Our kayak club is very exclusive and you’ll spend time in a small group of fellow paddlers and expeditioners that love adventures – just like yourself! You’ll get an experience that many others don’t, such as a close-up view of curious penguins jumping in and out of the water, a stunning maze of iceberg formations or simply a crystal clear ocean surface to glide through while taking the pictures of a lifetime.

What will I see while kayaking?

Get ready for the best views of remote bays, pristine beaches, mesmerising icebergs, mountain ranges and, of course, wildlife! It’s not unheard of that while you’re paddle along a calm shore a penguin will dart out of the water to land right next to you on an ice floe! Your kayaking instructor will always be there to guide and instruct you on how to stay safe and ensure compliance with all IAATO guidelines on wildlife viewing.

What are the conditions like?

We won’t let you kayak the Drake Passage – that’s for sure. But once we reach the Antarctic Peninsula and placid bays of South Georgia Island, we’ll deploy our kayaks whenever weather conditions permit. Most of the times you’ll find yourself gliding on mirror-like water surfaces with penguins, seals and even whales swimming close by. Crystal-clear waters will allow you to spot them right from the kayak! Other days you may encounter minor challenges like moderate waves and a swell, but our kayak instructors will ensure that you’ll have a good and safe time out on the water.

Sea Kayak Club is available on selected voyages of Sea Spirit to Antarctica and the Arctic. This is a limited-availability optional activity that has certain joining and membership requirements. Please see our How to Join and FAQ pages for more information.

Can I fly drones in Antarctica?

Pristine landscapes, gigantic icebergs and iconic wildlife in their natural habitat – no wonder that, as an avid expeditioner, you’ll be blown away by the beauty of the White Continent. And of course, you’d like to remember these magical moments with lots of photos and video footage! But what about Antarctica drone footage? Even though you can visit Antarctica for tourism, it is still a natural reserve and sanctuary for wildlife and its ecosystem contributes to keeping our planet healthy. Thus, The International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) regulates drone usage in Antarctica with a temporary ban on flying drones without a permit set on a yearly basis with annual reviews every May to allow for potential changes or adjustments.

How can I obtain a permit to fly my drone over Antarctica?

Unfortunately, here we are tied up by regulations and can’t assist you. If you would like to bring a drone on your Antarctic cruise, you’ll need to apply for a permit yourself at your national authority regulating these matters. Please note that your permit needs to be submitted no later than 60 days before your cruise starts to the U.S. authorities (our organisation’s activities in Antarctica are regulated by the U.S. Government as part of the Antarctic Treaty requirements). Once you’ve received your permit, please send it to us so we can submit it with the authorities.

Will recreational drones ever be allowed in Antarctica?

It’s not unlikely that at some point flying a drone in Antarctica will be possible and easier to realise. Since drones in Antarctica are a quite recent issue, the IAATO is still establishing its rules and regulations and constantly adjusting them. Working with all members of the treaty, the IAATO is not for an outright ban on all drones in Antarctica, but rather a framework that covers safety for the environment and wildlife.

Meanwhile we can assure you that you’ll get prime views from deck, our Zodiac boats, kayaks and while venturing out on foot. Antarctica drone footage may give you a view from above, but a real expedition cruise brings you right into the action! After all, your cruise to Antarctica will allow you to immerse yourself fully into this beautiful polar paradise, visit the best spots for viewing and photographing wildlife and taking home memories for a lifetime.

What about flying drones in other Antarctic regions?

As the IAATO regulates the entire Antarctic region, the same drone laws apply also for the subantarctic islands.

Guests aboard the Sea Spirit can participate in projects like the Happy Whale Project, photographing whales to aid research on migration, population, and health. Beyond science, the company engages in initiatives such as Clean Up Svalbard, helping remove marine debris and protect Arctic wildlife. By combining exploration with meaningful contribution, Poseidon Expeditions ensures every journey benefits both travellers and the polar regions they visit. 

Included option

At Poseidon Expeditions, we believe that every voyage should be more than just a journey — it should be an opportunity to make a positive impact on the places we visit and on science itself.

That’s why we actively support Citizen Science projects aboard our expedition vessel Sea Spirit. During our cruises, guests are invited to participate in real scientific research, collecting valuable data on marine life. One notable example is the Happy Whale Project, a global citizen science initiative launched in 2015.

Did you know that the patterns on a whale’s tail are unique, just like human fingerprints? Researchers compare these patterns to track individual whales and observe them over long periods. This helps to better understand their migration routes and population numbers.

Participating in Happy Whale is simple: you take photos of whales and upload them to the platform. If the whale isn’t yet in the database, you can give it a name! And if the tail patterns match a whale already registered, you’ll see where and when that whale has been spotted before.

This platform allows individuals to contribute to photo-identification studies. The images help researchers track individual animals, monitor their health, and understand migration patterns, contributing to global conservation efforts.

Beyond science at sea, Poseidon Expeditions also takes part in environmental initiatives such as Clean Up Svalbard. In partnership with local organisations, our crew and guests help remove marine debris and litter from the Arctic coastline. This hands-on action not only restores the pristine beauty of Svalbard but also protects wildlife from the dangers of pollution. By combining exploration with meaningful contribution, Poseidon Expeditions ensures that each journey leaves a lasting legacy of care for the polar regions we cherish.

In May 2019, Sea Spirit was retrofitted with new Rolls Royce zero-speed (Stabilization At Rest) fin stabilizers, providing high-performance roll damping while underway, drifting or at anchor. They incorporate a time-tested leading-edge design that eliminates vibration and noise and are fully compatible with environmentally acceptable lubricants (EAL) and feature quad main seals for additional redundancy.

Sea Spirit uses available high-quality low-sulfur marine gas oil (MGO) for its cruises in the polar regions. From 1 January 2020, the limit for sulfur in fuel oil used on board ships operating outside designated emission control areas will be reduced to 0.50% m/m (mass by mass) from 3.50% m/m. This limit is set in Annex VI of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) International convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL). The m/v Sea Spirit already complies with these requirements - we always use MGO with sulfur content equal to or less than 0.50%.

In Spitsbergen, we take part in the “Clean Up Svalbard” initiative, reducing beach waste on each of our landings. This program is coordinated by AECO, the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators. Most of the waste is plastic pollution from local shipping and commercial fishing. It accumulates rapidly, taking decades to break down, and posing a great threat to seabirds and other wildlife. And, needless to say, it does not belong in the picturesque landscapes of the wild islands. Joined by our passengers, we pick up the debris from the beach and later deposit it in a dedicated bin in Longyearbyen, where it will be properly processed.

Inspired by Clean Up Svalbard, we’ve spread these best practices and now run essentially the same initiative on our Franz Josef Land landings.

RAISING AWARENESS

Poseidon Expeditions’ onboard team always includes polar specialists: conservationists, prominent guest scientists, marine biologists, ornithologists, climate specialists, geologists and sea ice experts. In the form of enriching lectures and informative briefings, our experts and expedition leaders candidly discuss the issues facing Arctic and Antarctic ecosystems and what we can all do to help preserve wildlife in these fragile environments.

We encourage our passengers to get more involved in our environmental initiatives (cleaning up beaches, taking part in Citizen Science projects, etc.). Being able to witness the pristine wilderness of the polar regions, they join as guests but leave as ambassadors for these fragile ecosystems.

PROTECTING NATURE

During landings and shore excursions, we follow the guidelines established by AECO and IAATO to protect the local flora and fauna, including rigorous bootwashing before and after landings to prevent accidental transmission of biological pathogens between penguin colonies. Similarly, our guests thoroughly vacuum their outwear and backpacks to eliminate any possibility of transporting an alien species of seed or other flora. We continuously educate our guests to leave no lasting signs of our visit and advise them on essential safety precautions as well as the proper social and cultural considerations.

Supporting indigenous communities

When we visit local communities, particularly in Greenland, we always remember that we are lucky to be their guests, making every effort to leave only good impressions. We support local suppliers and regularly visit museums, research stations, and souvenir shops during landings.

We have profound respect for the people who are always welcoming and open to our guests and make sure to appreciate their right to privacy as we work to conduct tourism that is truly sustainable.

Our recommendation is to bring «arctic quality» clothes that will fit into a layered clothing scheme. For example, packing «arctic quality», light-weight long-sleeve t-shirts, turtlenecks, and a water-proof shell is better than packing five big, cotton sweaters and two huge «winter-down» coats. Three to five pairs of active-wear pants, and then a pair of waterproof pants such as ski or snowboard pants, which is designed to respond to temperatures variations, is much better than seven pairs of jeans.

Keep in mind that you may experience anything from t-shirt weather to arctic, sub-zero snow-squalls (if you are lucky), so, each day’s temperature might change quickly without any time for you to change your clothes — layers are essential. Of course, your dinner clothes are your decision. Please read the following article designed to give you an understanding of how to dress. The tips and Packing List, below, will act as a guide in the packing process.

Why being layered is so important?

Temperatures may be warmer in the day than you expect, which will cause you to sweat. Your sweat will make for a cold feeling and once you get wet, your body will lose its natural temperature at a higher rate than before. If you are dressed appropriately, you can remove a light-weight layer and carry it with you. Second, your body works hard due the climate. The cold weather, snow, and natural adjustment of your body require a significant output of physical energy other than just walking. You will want to be able to take off and put on layers as needed. It can’t be stated enough here; layers are the key to comfort in a Polar climate.

Being waterproof is also essential.

Although summer temperatures are generally mild, you should expect wind, clouds, and precipitation. It is also possible that water will spray up on passengers during Zodiac cruising. We can say with certainty that if your clothes are not waterproof on the outer layer, you will get cold. In this regard, we recommend being mindful of having waterproof shoes as well. Trust us, having a water-proofed outer layer can make or break your travel experience.

Beware of tight clothing that doesn’t let your body «breathe».

Part of being insulated is a system of letting the natural warm air of your body counteract the cold air you encounter. If your clothes are too tight, and don’t allow for insulation, you can get cold easily. Also, remember that cotton isn’t really an insulator. So, we recommend more modern arctic designed clothing.

Finally, remember the «wind-chill factor» and plan accordingly.

A stiff wind on a polar plain can sweep away any generated body heat in a second, and it’s important that your clothes are windproof. A good, warm wind-proofed shell will keep your chill to a minimum, so make sure any shell you bring is insulated, water- and windproof.

Expedition Clothes

• Parka (usually provided by Operator). You should look for a lightweight, wind and weather-resistant shell with insulation. Bright colors are more visible, and safer in polar environments. Traditionally, Polar travelers wear red.
• Warm trousers. Ski pants are suitable if you have them. Otherwise, bring any sturdy trousers that can be layered between your long underwear and rain over-trousers.
• Waterproof pants (trousers). This is probably the most important clothing you can pack for a trip. А pair of water-resistant «rain-pants» made of coated nylon are essential. These are worn like shell for your legs. Look for Gore-Tex and other synthetic fabrics that are waterproof and «breathable». These materials keep out wind and water without trapping excess heat. Due to environmental reasons, it is strongly recommended to bring waterproof trousers with no Velcro at the ankle and backpacks with no mesh.
• Thermal underwear. You should select medium to thick thermal underwear; long sleeve thermal top, trousers and socks. Most people prefer a lightweight version — but this depends on your personal thermostat. Polypropylene fibres are warmer when damp or wet, than silk or wool, although the CSIRO has recently developed a fine wool product called Sportwool.
• Sweaters or polar fleece jacket. Wool sweaters or a polar fleece jacket of medium weight are recommended.

Onboard Clothes

• Turtlenecks or t-shirts. Bring several practical turtlenecks or t-shirts for layering and use around the ship.
• Ship Attire. Dress on the ship is informal. Clothing on board is usually jeans, corduroys, casual slacks or trousers, long sleeve shirts or t-shirts, fleece and a parka in hand during the day. Cruise wear should be lightweight and easy to care for.

Our Expedition Team always includes a doctor who is responsible for the health of our passengers and Expedition Team. Also, each ship has a clinic area equipped to handle foreseeable emergencies.

Medications

It is extremely important that you bring any prescribed medicines with you. While we do carry emergency supplies of common medications, we cannot access the kinds of information necessary to guarantee a surplus of the necessary medicine for all travelers on a given cruise.

MEDICAL EVACUATION AND REPATRIATION INSURANCE FOR EXPEDITION CRUISES:

It is mandatory for all passengers travelling with Poseidon to carry adequate travel insurance that must contain medical, evacuation and repatriation coverage. Passengers must ensure that their purchased insurance includes cruise travel in the polar regions, and has evacuation and repatriation coverage of no less than US$ 200,000 per person (for Arctic and Antarctica cruises). For cruises in non-polar regions, a minimum of US$ 100,000 of evacuation and repatriation insurance coverage is required. As part of the pre-departure forms that passengers complete, Poseidon requires information as to the insurance company name, policy number, amount of coverage and 24-hour contact number. Any risks not covered by the insurance policy provided are the responsibility of the passenger at his/her own expense. Passengers must have proof of insurance while aboard and produce it if requested.

Weather conditions in polar cruises are generally mild, with temperatures near freezing point. However, the continuous sunlight of 18 - 24 hour days adjusts your thermal temperature to the cold air. Passengers have been known to safely experience ‘t-shirt’ conditions.
At the same time, you may encounter fog, white-outs, and other adverse weather conditions.

Antarctica - Everyone reacts differently to the occasional, rough water of the Drake Passage. Passengers should consult their personal physician prior to travel to Antarctica and carry the recommended preventative medications at all times. That said, not all Drake Passage crossings are tumultuous.

The Arctic – While we are navigating between the Arctic islands we may get into rough seas. But once sheltered by islands in icebound waters, you won’t feel any ocean swell or heavy seas.

Smoking in cabins or public areas of the ship is strictly prohibited by safety regulations. There will be a designated smoking place outside in a sheltered area.

There are no universal physical requirements for travel in polar regions. However, for certain expedition cruises participants are expected to be fit to undertake the expedition, including the ability to bring any necessary medications and to cope with the challenges of remote and climatically demanding, and rough-sea conditions. Please note that specialized medical assistance is not available in these regions. Passengers with certain medical/or health issues may not be suitable for this type of expedition and are strongly advised to exercise caution. Our medical information form lists a number of such conditions and must be completed prior to departure.
