About this Event
Fort Nelson is also one of the few places where you can experience live firings of historic artillery pieces.
The 25-pounder gun/howitzer is one of Britain’s most iconic artillery weapons and was used effectively throughout World War II when its six-man crew would have travelled with it from the beaches of Normandy to the outskirts of Berlin. Most artillerymen during the period, including famous names such as Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe, would have used one of these guns during its 30-years of service.
The Howitzer will be fired by uniformed detachments from the Portsdown Artillery Volunteers, who will be available to talk about the guns and the firing drills they perform.
This is a free event and suitable for all ages.
Gun firing times
Ear defenders will be available.
